Thats all really cool. When i worked on a ocean going tug boat we supplied all our own power thru big generators. Of course our water for cooking showers and drinking all came from holding tanks that were filled at the dock. All of the waste went into holdding tanks and we had them pumped out after every trip.i watch a lady that just sailed from panama to french polynesia by herself on a 23 ft. Monohull. Lol she was on board for 41 days so if y'all gonna do a pacific sail gt ready. Have fun stay safe

So food for thought I didn’t read all the comments below but I would separate the water systems that way if you can contaminate one you don’t contaminate both. And you still have one good one as a supply source. Sometimes the filtration systems fail and you can pump your tank full of contaminated salt water and it just ruins the whole tank. Redundancy is key

For many laptops, camera and other tech there are 12volt chargers available. If you get those then you’ll use less amp hours via not having to use the inverter. You can even get 12 volt powered USB-C ports so you can charge tech that uses that newer standard.

Recommendation: you may be sufficient, but consider PACE, Primary, Alternate, Contingency and Emergency sources for every system on the boat. Cooking is one area, Propane is your Primary, a good alternate would be convection because you have the electricity, contingency could be a sun oven and an emergency could be cooing on shore with wood. Good luck and be safe. We wish you guys fair winds and following seas...

Nice of you to detail all of this out. Many people don't know about the 'behind the scenes' of boat life. I am surprised at your battery 'bank' in terms to the total amp hours being so low. Although lithium is so forgiving in how much you can draw them down I know that running all night under sail with an autopilot & fridge will demand a lot . . . especially if the next day is cloudy w/o much solar input. Impressive that you can get along so well with so little.

Not sure if it would work for you guys but on another youtube channel (Fate Unbound) converted a portable generator to run off propane instead of gas. Seems more convenient and cheaper. They are in an RV but it should work the same for a boat. I think the conversion is just a small kit they bought on Amazon.

Some good tips in there, the silicon freeze bags and the Victron power electronics in particular. You're not using any solar cooker / oven ? No poop incinerator ? I've been wondering about using a shredder + 3D printer to recycle or repurpose otherwise single-use plastics from the groceries. In theory, with some serious engineering you can also make a pyroliser for most plastics (even heavily contaminated and mixed), and make your own diesel and gasoline + some cooking gas on the side (needs a modification of the stove but it works). With the heaps of plastics sadly floating or lying around the oceans, that might dent the fuel budget significantly if it works.

I hauled a generator from a hospital that had been updated to a man who has a solar ranch. His son wanted a machine shop so he got a generator cheap since they were updating it anyway. His solar would not power 3 phase equipment. He has a big barn that has a solar panel roof. He built another shed with a solar panel roof. His system is lithium with a nice size substation for solar. It does have a gas generator in the system but he said at most he would spend $300 a year and hasn't had any major repair cost yet. He uses central heat and air, electric hot water heater and all electric in the kitchen. He also uses well water. The utility companies have no connection to his property now.

...get DC adapters for your laptops and everything else possible. AC->DC inverters are inefficient and burn power just being turned on even when not under load.
@scottjp84 жыл бұрын
Somebody is going to get a nice boat! Congrats!
@FlesHBoX4 жыл бұрын
So technically speaking you don't need AC for the computers. Those bricks on the power cord convert AC to DC. The only issue is voltage. You would want to check what voltage your specific laptop's power supply is outputting of course, but typically they are in the 15-20 volt range. This would mean you need to either step-up from 12 to whatever your laptop uses, or if you were on a 24 volt system, step-down. The main benefit to this would be more efficiency. Inverters only hit their peak efficiency under a specific load, and the efficiency drops off on either side, and even if they were 99% efficient at their peak, there is still loss. They also use power just to exist. So if you cut out the inverter you can save that power. It only gets worse if you are then converting that AC *back* to DC, which has its own loss happening, so using a step-up/down converter, while not perfectly efficient, cuts out two points of power loss. Though, of course, this would mean making custom wiring, because I don't suspect anyone makes laptop power cords for this application, lol. This, of course, applies to any device you have that has a brick on the cord. All of those bricks should have their output printed on them, so you could set up an almost entirely DC system with some creative use of wire cutters and DC-DC step converters.

I would say you need at least 20Kw of LiFePo4. You have only 2.5 kW. With enough batteries you should not have a generator onboard. You can build yourself a battery cheap (at least 3 times less than anything on the market). Or you can try: 1. Fortress 10 kW - www.renvu.com/Solar/Off-Grid-Backup-Batteries/Fortress-Power-Lithium-Iron-Phosphate-Battery-LFP-10 2. Fortress eVault 18.6 kW - www.renvu.com/Solar/Off-Grid-Backup-Batteries/Fortress-Power-Lithium-Iron-Phosphate-Battery-eVault-18.6 I would not go less than 10 kW for any application.
