Hey guys, I use some stuff called ceramic fiber (blanket) to make furnaces for metal melting. I'm pretty sure its original purpose was for insulating ovens. From the looks of the shot where you put the oven back in, you'd have room to wrap the outside of your oven. It probably won't do much to cool the front of the oven, but I bet it would do wonders for prevent heat from radiating upward. For the difference it would make, the stuff is pretty inexpensive and can be obtained from Amazon. I think those those marks on your wood are blade burn from a table saw.

Hey Billy The oven should have a thermal blanket around it. Ovens and dishwashers usually have these around them. I think they just left it off.
@skyak4493
@skyak4493 2 ай бұрын
Yes, a thermal blanket at least 3/8 thick, rock wool pref. and I would add a radiant reflective layer over that. If you are measuring over 160f on a vertical open convective surface, a horizontal in a closed area is well over 200f. Insulation will protect the cabinet but the door will still be hot (slightly less so because the oven will fire less when better insulated). To avoid butt burn maybe a silicone guard layer.

The fastest way to get a proper oven in your boat that does not overheat the surrounding materials, is to ask them if they will cover fire insurance and complete boat replacement if the oven overheats and sets the boat on fire. Trust me, they don't want to be liable for a fire on a brand new boat.

They should trust good judgement and look at all valid data. Trust is often earned and easily lost, never to return. The insurance angle is smart though... though sometimes insurance companies make bad bets. Worse if they make enough bad bets, they go under and can fail to pay a claim (or its tied up on court - forever!). Look at the crazy insurance costs in Florida and around the USA ... quality and properly engineered appliances can be tricky to find.

the oven is a venting problem. The reason it's so much hotter at the top than it is on the sides and front is that is because that is where it is venting. Doesn't sound like a great design but that is what is happening
@wjhann4836
@wjhann4836 2 ай бұрын
Had the same thought. There are many vent holes in the oven. But when it shows that temperatures, there must be ventilation blocked. ----- Billie - I was not pleased to see when you replaced the stove. It seems the complete area above the oven and below the stove is isolated. IMHO there should be some ventilation. Think about the temperatures you measured and the electrical cables of the stove - that doesn't match up.

I would really push for feedback from Seawinds on the oven install. Honestly kind of shocked it doesn’t have fire stop insulation around it. That is a ton of energy waste and a safety concern that should be pretty easily remedied. But it is proper for them to provide guidance on an issue like that.

I know that I am late replying to Billy (it’s a KZbin thing). Anyway you need a thermal blanket wrapped around your oven rated for high temperature’s. Plus your oven is also venting outside front of your oven. That’s why the oven has the slots above the oven door.

The reason you can see the saw marks on the burnt wood under the sink is because the cuts made during installation exposed wood that is untreated and will scorch easier when exposed to high temps. You definitely need a thermal blanket around that oven, which means you should probably make a little more space, which means you can cut off some of the burnt wood and hit with some treatment before installation.

I think it is to the left side facing the oven where the board on the front makes a corner with a board that runs out from it. The other board appears to have the “blade” marks as well. I say it is always nice to give folks the benefit of the doubt but this case none is due. The door of the oven needs to have its seal inspected to see if it is indeed doing its job and then the whole oven needs the insulation/fire blanket around it. I enjoy watching you two work through all your changes and do life how you are doing life. Keep being awesome!

186 degrees on that cooktop knob is not normal. Something is wrong with the normal heat deflection around the oven. Look for airflow obstructions. Mine relies on a simple convection airflow. It could have a non-functioning fan, but something is wrong there. As well the oven should have some insulation around the inside box itself. Is that missing? I would take part the stove to see what is going on. Make sure the requirements for free airflow for the oven are met.

Regarding your stove issue, you need insulation around that stove so it doesn’t radiate heat to everything around it. This is an installation issue and there should be some type of heat barrier around the stove and the cooktop so they don’t transfer heat between the two devices or to the surrounding cabinets.

Where the wood across the top of the oven opening is darkened looks scary hot. In my kitchen, I built the stove cabinet and lined the sides inside with sheet steel, galvanized, probably stainless would be better on the boat. At the top on the dark area would be the most important. Insulating closely around the oven might make for hot spots. I would suggest putting vents in the cabinet near the oven so excess heat could escape, there are stainless vent covers that would make the appearance good. Happy and safe sailing!

Kids, that is too dangerous with the oven. That is NOT normal. I have been using ovens and stoves for 70+ years, and that much heat outside of the oven is not normal. Do you ever smell wood burning when you are cooking or baking? With that wood charred like that inside the cupboard is NOT good. They should have some sort of fire preventive product between the stove and the wood or the counter top. Something isn't right structurally or with the oven. I would not use the oven until the company changes this set up.

Re oven cooktop overheating is I believe to do with a lack of adequate ventilation as you know heat rises so most of the heat ends up under the cooktop causing the problem, I would put a vent probably at the back of the cooktop for sucking air out from under the cooktop. I don’t believe either the appliances are faulty, they just lack adequate ventilation . Remember when increasing the air out to also increase the air in. Regardless, this problem is seawinds issue, so they should supply all the vents, ducting fans, etc. Best of luck, Glen .

Can you get a wrap of insulation around the oven? Even a thin wrap can hold back a lot of heat. Also when using an IR temp meter you want the beam to hit the object as straight on as you can, and if you are going to take readings on a bunch of different surfaces you can put a piece of black electrical tape on each one, then take the measurement on the tape. That will give you a more uniform measurement.

My comment would , if you can create safe vents that allows the excess heat to escape behind the burner plate of the stove, you may find that the temperature around the oven will be reduced due to airflow. Captured heat tend to cause the wood environment to deteriorate and leads to smoldering fires that cannot be seen and by the time you smell it , it may already be to late. Insolation is great but around the oven where the air is heated to those high temperatures i would make air vents to allow for the escaping of the hot air. Thanks for your wonderful and informative program. Have a great time

I agree with some who have commented the oven and install is not safe. I think there is not ventilation to dissipate the heat, the oven may not have adequate insulation to prevent heat escaping from the oven box, and maybe the door seals are not preventing heat from escaping. Don't use it until it is replaced and the cabinet it sits in is modified to vent the heat in a safe way. In my kitchen, I have a built-in wall oven. On the wall the oven sits in I have installed porcelain tiles on the entire wall. I place a thermometer on top of the door close to the tile, and the temp maxis out at about 100º F. And the tiles do not discolor from gas escaping the oven. The oven before the current one discolored the wallpaper and ceiling and heated the wallpaper to about 175º. This oven problem should be a top priority. I think you should seek an opinion from Mads on Sail Life! edit: The wood looks like it was charred from the oven. Webhead USA

It could be missing insulation and it's not vented. Drill 1" vent hole on both sides of the cabinets. You could also put a computer fan to increase ventilation. Household ovens vent to the back of the stove top. That's why they have vent louvers on the bottom of back panel.

I would highly recommend reflective insulation to wrap the oven for several reasons. 1) it is lightweight, 2) easy to install, 3) reflective insulation allows heat to be reflected back into the oven, which allows for less use of power. 4) it creates a heat barrier alliwing your counters and the stove to stay cooler. This can be used for many projects around the boat and comes in all sizes of rolls and can be inexpensive. Good luck.

So much to unpack in this episode. 1. I love crossing things off of my to do list. A genuine feeling of accomplishment. 2. The solar panels with the front cover is amazing and the craftsmanship looks really nice. And you can never have too much shade. 3. The stove oven area burning wood is from the tool. If it was heating it would have started lower where it's not burnt and then worked its way up. Plus you can see the circular motions that seem to match it. Still any control surfaces should not earn you when you touch them. Anything over 115 is too hot when you're talking about control surfaces. As far as the wood catching Fire someday it won't begin to off gas till it's over 400 however years of constant low heating pysolis it causes the lower the off gassing temperature. Irregardless that oven needs modifications or replacement. Maybe you can wrap it with a heat blanket made from ceramic fiber or something along the lines in the meantime. For the stove, start by checking, possibly adding, insulation around the oven inside the cabinet. And then I'd want more ventilation in the cabinet so the heat can't build up so much. If you can get multiple openings near the bottom, and wire them up to some 12v PC fans, that will handle the cabinet itself. If the handle is getting too hot, hang a dish towel there for safety.

Hey guys, love your Channel, keep up the great job….. About your stove I think the problem about the heat getting so high on the top is that there are no aluminium isolation plate on the top of the stove in that way, it will isolate the heat to the wood, and also the side panels in that way. You also keep the heat as much inside the stove and therefore you can regulate the temperature much better. So what I think you should do is to try to take the stove out and look for this aluminium plate. You can buy that isolation aluminium in every shops that deals with stove and so on. Ups, I didn’t see the show to the end, so do you have actually remove the oven and there you have the big problem the whole area around the oven is definitely not isolated and you can also get these aloe minium foil plates then you can go onto the wood where you have all the burn marks and I’m quite sure the burn marks from the oven, so I think you should do that as quick as possible because Otherwise you can end up having a fire, so that is the issue you’re really has to fix. Good luck with it.

Hey guys, the Auburn compartment should have some kind of heat insulation protecting the other surfaces from all excessive heat coming from the oven. And that edge is from the oven heat rising and being consistently that heat of 160 in that area burning the wood. It would smell like burning wood. If you ever seen that reflective tape and air conditioning units that's to keep the cold in. They have heat resisting tape and insulation boards that keep the heat from escaping out from the object producing the heat. And like a previous message or comment. Sea wind should take care of that oven situation. That ovens causing damage to the stove. That oven is a potential fire hazard for your boat without having an insulated compartment from the excessive heat of that oven. I would avoid using that stove I mean the oven. At the present time I would use the outside grill to cook anything at the present time. That oven is a fire has it aboard A boat like that. It should have been well insulated against fire. You also should look into getting a fire blanket to cover any potential flyer a board your boat.

Often the minimum ventilation path has been obstructed. The oven's as-designed vents appear to be vastly insufficient for use in a hot environment. Two fold approach: 1. Insulate the oven to keep the heat inside. 2. Most important: Please add a vent path from behind and underneath the oven. Cutting large holes in cavity floor may be required to draw sufficient airflow past the oven to draw the heat and exit the louvers. Worst case, use computer fans at the feed holes to create a positive pressure (blow into) in the stove cavity. Your creativity will serve you well. Thank you for your wonderful videos!❤

It is Seawind's responsibility to correct this oven and cooktop situation. Hot temperatures on surfaces around the cooking equipment is unacceptable and can cause serious injury. Most adults will suffer third-degree burns if exposed to 150 degree water for two seconds. Burns will also occur with a six-second exposure to 140 degree water or with a thirty second exposure to 130 degree water. Even if the temperature is 120 degrees, a five minute exposure could result in third-degree burns

Very good educational video on the maintenance tasks and warranty issues. You might want to try firestop insulation between the ovens top and the stove under the counter to see if it protects the stove knobs. Oven needs to vent but the design does seem flawed.

If you take the oven out put some car engine hood liner in above the oven between the oven and the stove and make sure it hangs over the front to protect the wooden surface above the oven door, but not so far down that it blocks the vent holes for the oven itself.

you can see on the front of the oven there is a vent top & bottom for ventilation in & out. some models have a thermostat controlled cavity cooling fan in the oven. which this type of use definitely requires

Saw blade burn and the best way to drop the temp in the oven housing would be to add an auxiliary fan that blows fresh air into that area and a place for the heat to vent out, in my opinion. Enjoying the trip btw. Thanks for sharing.

Yes put insulation under the cooktop. Also more ventilation get more air in the cabinet wire up some 12v PC fans, get multiple openings so the heat can't build up so much.

Could the problem with the oven be caused from poor ventilation to let the heat escape from the surrounding cabinet. If you could mount a small fan that is either manual or temperature activated in one of the cabinets next to or below the stove and put some holes in the cabinets wall or ceiling to allow air circulation around the oven when its on may help reduce the temperature around the cabinetry around the oven. What would scare me is starting a fire ,but whats really scary is the propane line for the cook top runs through that oven surround and the line goes right through the area thats getting hot. Those burn marks on the wood sure dont look like burn marks from a saw. To blacken wood like that with a saw blade youd just about have to have that saw blade red hot.

You need a one piece oven range with vents in the back of range for oven heat

That is a pretty awesome shade cover you had made! And from the circular pattern I saw on that wood I'd guess that was burnt from the blade. But I wouldn't bet on it and would consider the need for a different oven very seriously.

Re the heat coming from the oven, check the oven's installation & you'll probably find that it requires a partition between the oven & the cooktop ( box )

Bill has others have said - it is definitely a ventilation problem with the oven. The scorch marks on the hob cut out are probably burn from the saw blade.

Just replace the separate oven and two burner top you have with the Eno gimbaled two burner stove, it’s all stainless (no paint) just mount it locked in. Cheers and good luck.

Regarding the oven, do you thing a heat shield between the top of the oven and bottom of stove top would prevent the knobs from peeling? It is definitely a poor design, but you should be able to purchase a flexible heat shield which would help.

Oven needs venting. Put an air grill in the kicker to let cool air in and external vent to top back of oven. Check manufacturers book to see where the oven vent is. Go from there.

Get a couple of fans for the oven cabinet. Definitely needs some better air flow. That’d reduce the temperatures that you’re getting.

you could try ceramic fiber mats or panels which could contain the heat better. maybe oven surrounds or heat shields with an air gap. as far as bumping into it with your butt, you could fabricate a protective bar a few inches out for protection the same way you can have a protective bar around an outboard to protect it. great episode though!!

Wouldn’t any color than black work better for the shades? Seems like it would be a lot hotter than a lighter color

I follow a sailing channel ,i can't remember there channel name but they used a new battery operated sander ,well it looks like one. Its got like a green ,yellow sponges and it really worked. Looks like when you use it you can stay under for longer and it goes match faster!!!!!

Hey Billy, any update on that solar bow awning? Looks like 4x 200 watt panels. Where did you end up running the connector to to connect and are you gettting close to the 800 watts?
