I was part of a family Marina / boat yard for 34 years. We were a Suzuki dealer, Yanmar, Westerbe, Perkins, Volvo etc dealer. On top of that we were a full service Marina, we installed and service Solar, refrigeration, all types of electrical. You got the picture . . . .
@mikephillips93115 жыл бұрын
Those lock bars work really well. I had one on my outboard for 12 years, never got my engine stolen. After a couple of years of cruising use the vinyl started peeling away due to the underlying rust buildup. I had it galvanized when we redid our anchor chain in New Zealand. For the next 10 years it was in perfect shape after that. Cable your dingy when at a dock & hoist your dingy when at anchor & you'll be golden! Leave it floating out behind your boat at night & I promise you'll get it stolen, especially in tropical areas!

I like the idea of engraving the boat number on to the engine. But I would make it as visible as possible, so would be thieves can see that you have safety measures in place. If the number is hidden the thieves won't find the number until they already have the engine. By then it's to late for you.

It's about time another channel has found an electric start engine for their dingy!!! I have been using for years with just a small motor cycle battery with a 40hp outboard with a bilge pump....way to go!:) You'll never go back. Makes boat life so much easier. It's your car and you don't get out and crank your car to start it:)

When you said I hope not too much vibration and moved it around it reminded me how much noise that thing made on mine I use some foam copper pipe insulation on the inside to keep it from moving around and rattling it worked well I think it was 1/2 inch

Goodluck with the new motor. When i bolt the motor to the transom ,i always use stainless bolts and teflon treaded nuts. Also i bolt the other way, nuts on the inside just so I can keep an eye on them in case of loosening.And silicone the holes that were drilled water doesn't wreck your transom, Keep up the great work you 3.

G'day Bill, & Sierra! Terrific video! Sharing: You want to buy a new outboard for $800? It’s a real steal!” "Apparently, so do petty thieves in the Caribbean, too! Dinghies and dinghy motors (particularly outboard motors) are hot ticket items down island these days, and we knew several cruisers who got theirs stolen right off the back of their boats and heard cautionary tales of many others. In order to make a new outboard less of a target, we were advised by a friend to take the "Yamaha 15 HP stickers" off the motor." "Well, peeling away the stickers, and removing left-over residue with Goo Gone, I had the (literal) bright idea to paint the whole cover canary yellow. Yellow is the most visible color to spot on the ocean and my thinking was that a thief would be less likely to steal something so...loud. They say that most petty thieves are simply opportunists. If that is the case, it is our job to make stealing less of an opportunity, and more of a chore. Give those 'bloody bad guys' a reason to pause. Most thieves will pass up the tricky jobs. After all, we're talking about thieves here, they are lazy folk by nature. "Work" is not something they enjoy." Thank you, guys! Cheers! 😊✌🏼⛵️❤️ Suggestions: Making your outboard less attractive, to the thieving set. (take off, all the stickers) And then, leaving it black, it’s a Merc. Paint it blue, it’s an Evinrude!! (or) Painting it girly pink, & covering with duct tape. Lol! 😉

Congrats on your new Suzuki 20 EFI! You will love it. The most efficient, powerful, lightweight motor in its class. Several things you need to know. The prop is too small for your boat but it’s perfect for break-in tho. A 12’ RIB will top out at about 31 mph with the right prop like a 9.25 X 11 aluminum Solas and one person. Run a bit less prop if you’re a soft bottom or always with two onboard. Be warned that you need to use the supplied transom bolts because if you cross a wake at speed, the clamps are not adequate to avoid twisting the engine off the transom! If you see a large V shaped spray behind you it’s because your engine is too deep, but it’s not worth raising or building a higher transom for a 1 mph gain, trim is more important. If you have problems with keeping the bow down while getting on plane, don’t use a hydroplane or fin, buy Smart tabs instead. You will have a lot of “tiller torque” at speed. This can countered by making a trim tab on the starboard side of the skeg. Build a 3/8” wedge of JB weld on a paint free surface, the trailing edge is flat/squared off. You will notice a lot of tiller vibration at speed. Don’t use the tiller lock to dampen (red lever) use the friction adjust bolt but don’t over tighten or you could break the housing. The ECU has rubber grommets that wears out and you should replace them every 50 hours if you always run at top speed like I do. Of course you can always run slower too. Enjoy!
@MsRob19775 жыл бұрын
I used a 1/2 inch cable to lock it up to docks because it's harder to cut with bolt cutters because of all the little strands. I also bought a cheap go pro from a pawn shop and hid it in a fake rock or under the dock for proof if it ever was stolen. That always worked for me.

For you yanmar engines “ raw water pumps “ the is a great company best around called Depco in FLA they have all the parts in stock for your raw water pumps. Have you serviced the raw water pumps ? A typical service would include an impeller, a cam, cover plate, gasket. You need to check the window to see if the seals are leaking. If you have any questions you can email me or call me.

I've never used in a marine environment, but you might want to try Plasti Dip liquid rubber spray on your engine. It's like spray paint, but it can be peeled off if you decide to sell the outboard. It's also a matte finish so it would look pretty gnarly and might discourage potential thieves. Also, they make tamper proof nuts that require a special wrench to remove, might be a better option than messing up the standard ones when bolting to the transom.

The spot is a great idea.You should hook up the spot inside the engine housing via the battery start terminals or a secondary set inside the cowling. Then modify a pastic electronics experiment box to cover the spot logo and wires. Then put a sticker that says ignition module or something on that case. That way the internal battery doesn't get used, it is on the dingy and motor, it is hidden, and permanently powered.

The bar that goes over the clamp is good as long as it`s a good one. The spot is good but big and easy to see. They also make a small GPS that you can hide in the motor some place, so small that you won`t see it or know what it is if you do I have one on my MC. I`d do that If it ever grows feet again just track it. ( Buy the way pad lock for the bar is suppose to go through the hole in the tighten clamp for the motor. You shouldn`t have to enlarge it to fit the lock but you mite have to. Then the bar doesn`t slide back and forth like you were doing. )

Where you bolted the motor through the transom, weld the nuts onto the bolts. Just a short hit with the welder that won't heat the rest of the bolt is enough. I'll do it at the dock in my back yard if you want to sail up to Merritt Island, Fl. Otherwise, anyone with the cheapest Harbor freight welder can do it. The welder they have on sale for $80 from time to time will run on regular 30 amp 110v and is more than capable of permanently welding the nut onto the bolt.
