My little brother loved to watch the dogs and eventually he started worming after them soon after eventually he started crawling after them especially when they where sleeping. Poor Rufus old hound wasn’t able to sleep for years.
@susanklemm55054 жыл бұрын
Hello Chris. What a sweet story. The love you have for your brother and your old hound dog shines through! Your story also beautifully illustrates the miracle of development. Your brother saw something that he was curious about (using his visual system and his muscles to lift his head to see). The dog's smell and sounds and eye contact and his shiny fur or collar, basically everything about Rufus, probably motivated your brother. Part of what I like about the story is the "payoff" for your brother. Rufus wasn't cheering him on as parents often do. When we cheer and clap sometimes it is just pure joy and sharing. Sometimes though it is used as a motivator. When over used, it creates a baby that does things to get applause and approval and the baby misses out on the pure joy of movement. The baby also misses out on starting to build his "persistence" muscle and the development of curiosity as a driver of our actions. Your brother went from an itty, bitty baby lifting his head off the ground to see Rufus to eventually squirming and then crawling to get to him, creating complex motor plans and satisfying his curiosity! It's a wonderful miracle. As you say, perhaps not so wonderful for Rufus! Thank you so much for sharing!

I'm mom of 5, gramma of 18. Sleep babies on their tummies from birth - their neck, shoulders, back and arms get strong and their brains process right away that they can hold themselves up and turn their heads. They get out gas, burps and can soothe themselves. They don't have to wait for you to do everything for them. They can turn their own head and look around. They sleep more soundly too : ) Happy babies = happy mommies! This simplifies your life so no need to create "tummy time" since they are doing it from the start. Out of our 18 grandchildren - ages 5 months old to 10 years, the ones who were kept on their backs were 6 months behind developmentally compared to the tummy sleepers. The tummy slept babies are stronger, more capable, alert and happier. If you wait to pick a time to put your baby on it's tummy you have already retarded their growth and brain processing so it will be a chore instead of their natural growth pattern. Think it over. You'll be glad you did. Happy mothering!!
@runningformylifeful5 жыл бұрын
Janet Schwarz I really like your approach to this. It seems to me that babies are getting farther behind in their development as we go along. The whole reason they don’t recommend it any more is the apparent risk for SIDS, but I don’t see why a baby would be at risk of smothering themselves if they had been put on their tummy since day one. My daughter has always preferred to sleep on her tummy or her side, just like mommy. She has excellent neck strength and control at 2 months. You sound like an excellent mother and grandmother, your babies are very lucky 😊

@@runningformylifeful So wonderful your baby girl is a happy and capable 2 month old! - and you are coming alongside as a great mom as she grows : ) It appears that interventions that are intended to "help + protect" babies actually overcomplicate a very simple process in a baby's growth. So glad you have discovered this! Happy mothering : )

Hello Kimberly. I agree about how wonderful that elephant is. I recently tried to but a new one but could not find one! It was by Fisher-Price. The dalmation in the link below looks similar however I"m not sure it will roll independently (or will need you to push it). If you find the one in the video, please pass on where you found it! Mine is 11.5 months old, doesn't crawl on her own. Can sit well since 6 months. But never went on tummy. Rarely she slept on my papa's tummy. Now she doesn't cry if put on tummyy but immediately gets straight, but cires if forced or persuaded to stay on tummy. How do I get her to crawl, move? She stands n walks with my support.
@susanklemm55055 жыл бұрын
Hello Vidhya. Thank you for watching the video. I am assuming she also doesn't roll alot either. To help your baby to start moving more and crawling, help her go from sitting to side sitting. Put a toy she likes to the side that to get it she has to stretch and move and then you can help her shift her arms and legs around so she is in side sitting. She needs to get comfortable with putting weight on her arms. I also recommend trying to find an occupational or physical therapist to work with her and teach you ways to help her at home. With a therapist helping, I'll bet she'd start to move more within a few weeks! You are a good mrther to care and to be reaching out and asking these questions to help her!

Help, my baby face plants and cries the whole time. I don't know what to do. His head is very floppy. I'm a first time parent and didn't even know about tummy time until the pediatrician brought it up at the two month checkup. In these examples the babies are already holding their heads up, so I'm not sure what mine is supposed to look like. Might just go back to the pediatrician.
@susanklemm55052 жыл бұрын
Hello @lovelyPanda and congratulations on your baby! I’m not sure sure how you are getting him on his tummy. It often is a huge help if the baby is on his back, and then you slowly roll him to his side and then to his tummy. All the while you are on the floor with him making eye contact and gentle clucking or clicking noises or singing to him. Also try laying in your back with a pillow under your head and then put him in your chest. Keep giving it a try throughout the day in tiny little doses! There could be an in person tummy time class in your area which might be good. Oh and not to worry at this point about him not lifting his head. And yes, go back to your pediatrician if you have more concerns! Wishing you the best! Pathways.Org also has some great teaching videos!

@susanklemm55055 жыл бұрын
Hello Sue, I'm late in responding but you bring up an important part of development. It is quite true that there is no rush to push a baby to do anything. There is however a rush to provide a baby with the just right challenge. There is a big difference between a parent propping an infant in a walker to try to make them walk sooner and a parent who wants to play with their infant in a developmentally supportive manner. A tremendous amount of brain growth and connections still happening, even in the first few weeks after birth. A baby who spends some awake time on her tummy and then rolls around 3-4 months then crawls around 5-8 months will be exploring her environment. That is crucial for development. Thank you for bringing this up. Susan

My daughter is 7 weeks old and still wont lift her head in tummy time though she can support her head fine when Im holding her, she seems to just want to lick what ever is underneath her. How can i help this?
@susanklemm55058 жыл бұрын
Hello Jacqueline. At 7 weeks old it is fine if she is not yet lifting up her head when on her tummy. Try putting a pacifier in so she isn't as focused as orally exploring. It's very natural at this age that eveything "goes to her mouth". Also, try putting something really interesting to her (like your face or a black white design or a mirror) where she can see it and then ever so slowly move it towards the other side. You will probably see her eyes move and she might just start turning her head ever so slowly to follow. As she tries to follow her eye movements might be a little jerky. Keep doing it and soon she'll move her head and her eyes and start lifting her head. You'll be amazed at how she changes in even just a couple weeks. Keep gently doing some tummy and side time- when she is awake and well supervised. Enjoy this special time with her.

There is no evidence that I know of to say babies sleeping in their tummy while being observed is dangerous. Please can you justify this statement?
@susanklemm55052 жыл бұрын
Hello Kathryn. Extensive research with recommendations for supine sleeping at every sleep are from from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The latest guidance in June 2022 continues to recommend supine sleeping on a flat, firm surface as the safest position. 0 to 4 months being the most critical time. Place baby on her or his back for every sleep time. Around 4-8 months when the infant independently rolls themselves to their side or tummy it is okay to leave them in their new position, meaning the infant is placed on their back for every sleep and then rolls into another sleep position. Doing tummy time is a wonderful foundation for eventual rolling. publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/150/1/e2022057991/188305/Evidence-Base-for-2022-Updated-Recommendations-for?autologincheck=redirected?nfToken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 I hope this helps.

Fifteen to 20 minutes of TT for an eight-week-old is not enough? Give the baby a break! Too many parents are eager to push their babies to a point where babies become distressed! Not worth it! Babies develop on their own. Nature intended it that way. A little stimulation may be fine, but getting carried away is not!
@susanklemm55055 жыл бұрын
Hello Kala, I agree that pushing one's infant to a point of distress is not necessary or good. Reading and responding to the baby's cue is essential. That said, the vast majority of 8 week olds can do 15-20 minutes of tummy time within a 24 hour period without distress. It is true that some infants need time to accept that position. Something as simple as doing burping while the baby is on your lap and on the baby's tummy will provide the 15 to 20 minutes early on. It does not need to be all at once. As humans we need to be taught almost everything - from tying our shoes to using the toilet. Parents are being sold a tremendous amount of equipment in which an infant is harnessed in and in an upright position. That impedes the baby's development. My hope is that our video series is helpful to teaching and counteracting that trend. Hope this is helpful. Susan

Hello Sidra. Sorry for the late response. The guideline of the American Academy of Pediatrics is that baby's be placed on their backs to sleep to decrease the risk of SIDs. So if your baby falls asleep during tummy time, I recommend gently jostling her or rolling her a little and waking her up. If she (or he) really wants to sleep at that time, it is safest to put her on her back. I hope this helps. I said it before, the PhD should know better than to have a live fire with no screen around babies. UNC Chapel Hill, at Frank Porter Graham? ASHA Trainer of Trainers? Camille Catlette? We met in 1989, and I was shocked to see this video with the fireplace. 😯👪👎Sneezing is the warning sign of an overstimulated baby.
@angelaherring56405 жыл бұрын
The video is AWFUL. The intro has a lighted fireplace with no screen. Your baby could crawl in, and you are giving child development advice? When the baby cries and spits up in prone (on her tummy) that means you should STOP THE ACTIVITY. At her age there should only be tummy time for 2 minutes. Crying is an indication that she has had too much stimulation... if you feel like jumping up and grabbing her to console her then you would be on track. 😡

All I see with babies on their backs is the BIG FLAT HEADS that are so out of proportion. They look like freaks. Especially the lazy parent, the heads are so flat their eyes are freakishly wide apart. Every newborn I have been around will not tolerate laying on their backs.

Thought of sending a baby to day care is a terrifying and horrible though. No one cares about your baby like you do. It isn't normal to pay people to watch your baby. How did humanity survive without KZbin people telling you how to raise your kid.

I do tummy time with my daughter, and she usually does great. I use the boppy pillow at times, and also do it on my belly, while I’m reclined and that allows her to raise her head up. What I do worry about, is how she spits up. My baby girl sometimes has trouble with acid reflux, so after feedings I’m always making sure that I hold her upright for around 30 minutes. During the day, this makes tummy time difficult to fit in - mainly because I fear it will cause her spit ups to worsen. If they were small spit ups, I wouldn’t worry. But there’s been times she loses her breath. And I’m afraid that position will make it worse. Are there any tips to help prevent reflux in babies with tummy time? Is it best to do tummy time before feedings, or so long after she feeds?

Melissa, it's OK, if she spits a lot, as a video says. My baby girl also spits up a lot, mostly during the day. You shouldn't worry whether the tummy time will worsen it. You should do the tummy time before feeding. I read that it's best to do that 20 minutes before feeding and 30 minutes ( i think it's minimum) after feeding. Good luck!

Sounds like my baby, he has GERD. But his favorite position to sleep is on my chest and I count it as tummy time. After 30 mins of more upright sitting I lay down with him on my chest

it's amazing that all these babies survived for thousands of years without these classes to show them how to lay on their stomachs!
@susanklemm55053 жыл бұрын
Hello Ce Ce. I hear you! There are several underlying reasons why what used to be common knowledge and passed down from generation to generation has gone by the wayside and classes and information are needed. A major reason is the advertising, pressure, and marketing aimed at new parents to purchase and heavily use baby containers such as swings, bouncy seats, and other equipment which interrupts typical development and sets the scene for head shape issues. The issue is so widespread that there is now a condition termed "Container Baby Syndrome". There are other reasons, but this is a major one. We have seen this issue steadily increase over the last 15 years and everyday in our clinic we have parents that say "I wish I had known". Videos such as this are an effort to equip those parents who are interested and desire to know. I hope that helps explain why there is a need.

How many times for tummy time in a day for 2 months baby
@susanklemm55055 жыл бұрын
Hello Sabrina. Make tummy time part of your baby's routines, something like after every diaper change roll your baby onto her or his tummy. Also, incorporate it into burping by lying on your lap. As you walk around your house or apt, carry your baby on his or her tummy. Basically anytime your baby is awake try and incorporate it into what you are doing. I hope this helps! Congratulations on your baby!

My sister-in-law keeps her one-month-old baby in tummy time for a half hour twice a day. Even if the baby starts fussing and crying, she leaves the baby like that saying tummy time is good for their muscle development. Is this too long? I'm concerned (never had kids of my own).
@kaladwarakanath55035 жыл бұрын
I think it's too long! Not worth upsetting the baby to that extent! What's next? Making the baby lift five-pound dumbbells by age two..with all the muscles?

Hello. I can't tell if you are kidding or are perhaps distressed that your baby cries. Please note that we used 3 different babies for this video and they received lots of rest breaks off camera. If you have any concerns about your baby please talk to your pediatrician.
