This is detailed video of painting over the chrome grill surround on a 2008 Toyota Tundra. We run into some trouble with cheap clear coat, that creates a bunch of orange peel, and we show you how to fix it using 2000 grit sand paper and higher quality dupli-color clear coat.

Much agreed. I've heard that since it is a different material (steel) it would require much more sanding. But I will definitely be doing that also. If you end up doing it, you should definitely post a video of that as well!

Awesome video. I have been searching hi and low for a grill surround for my new '16 CM Tundra that should be arriving in March. The truck is white and I ordered the black billet grill with LED daytime running lights. I want the hood bulge and the grill surround to be black as well instead of chrome so it will have a very storm trooper look to it. This will be the route I take to get what I want.

looks great however. on plastic i tend to dissolve the chrome in bleach or superclean as it tends to peel as the grill gets older. also doesnt leave scratches on the surface as you dont need to sand. just clean with an adhesion promoter and spray then bake at 200 degrees and it comes out glass smooth.

Looks nice. In the paint industry, you Must sand metal, chrome,and plastic to get a "mechanical bond" for primer. Then degrease, then Epoxy primer. Etch primer doesn't hold to plastics or chrome. It is THE hardest substrate to guarantee a bond to. You did a great video. Not trying to be rude or bust your chops. Just advice man...

Nice job. Showing the mess-up actually helps because most of my DIY paint jobs were fails for one reason or another, but mostly inexperience. In retrospect I suppose you would have sanded with 2000 grit prior to the first clear coat to avoid the orange peel effect, right? I suppose doing this on the steel bumper would not look right, but did you consider that?
@AutoDIY
@AutoDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and posting your feedback. The best thing I could have done to avoid the orange peel would have been to test the can of clear before I applied it to the part. I just had some bad luck with that can. The replacement can went on like glass and stayed that way. A small test would have saved a bunch of time. I ended covering the chrome bumpers with black plasti dip, I am really happy with the way they turned out. I debated about going with a coat of bedliner but that would have required a lot more prep work and I am not sure I would have liked it as much. Plasti dip is easy to undo, which is also nice.

Solid job sir, bummer about all the orange peel tho. Any educated guesses on how to avoid that issue or possibly what caused it? Also after wet sanding the video quickly cut to the finished piece. Did you re clear it with a different clear or just throw on a fresh coat? Thanks for all the feedback this far! Very sharp look that I intend to do as well.
@AutoDIY
@AutoDIY 9 жыл бұрын
Andrew Beggin The orange peel was a huge bummer. You are correct I did end up putting a coat of dupli-color clear over it after wet sanding. I believe I had a bad can of clear that caused the orange peel, it just was not spraying well at all. The dupli-color clear on the other hand went on like a dream. The trick is to put the clear on heavy, long slow strokes, but not so heavy that it runs, it will appear glossy and beautiful while it's wet when you do it right, then just stand back and let it dry. It will look as good dry as it did while it was wet, and you don't even need to wet sand, especially on a small part like this one. Avoid my mistake, test your can before you apply it to the part, if it comes out clumpy don't spray your part. If it comes out smooth and shiny, you are in business. Thank you for watching and taking the time to ask your questions, best of luck on an orange peel free result.
@romant1703
@romant1703 6 жыл бұрын
These cans of cheap spray really don't atomize very well. That's why the orange peel. You can go to the automotive paint store and buy a 2k can of black trim paint and it'll atomize better. Also, when painting, do 50% overlapping and hold nozzle at 90 degrees about 5 inches above surface.

I know this post is old. But just in case you need to know how on another project. Don't use dupli-color clear or any other 1 stage clear. Use a 2k clear from a auto paint shop or find a good 2k clear on amazon with good reviews. They also sell them in cans that you push a red button on bottom to release the catalyst or hardener. 2k clears have 2 parts.

My Tundra has been down so many brushed over logging roads and skid trails that the entire rig is scratched to a matte finish from stem to stern. The anal care that people like this devote to what are essentially work vehicles always amazes me. Is it because they have a fantasy about actually needing this vehicle? Or is it something else. I know some gun lovers who are the same way. No real NEED, but an intense desire to HAVE the need. Perhaps it is societal alienation from our rural roots? Anyway - nice clean truck there. I didn't mean to get too deep there but this video really begs the question.

No real NEED for anything besides water as a drink. No real NEED for exotic cars. No real NEED for a V8 engine. No real NEED for a Mansion. No real NEED for a Yacht. Maybe some people take care of their stuff more than others. Those people generally lose less money.
@jsmcguireIII
@jsmcguireIII 9 жыл бұрын
Tungsten23 I need a V8 given what I have to haul. Water is by far the best thing for your health to drink. A mansion is waste of resources and a yacht is a hole in the water that rich boobs throw money into. I grew up in a huge house and my father had several large sailing boats. Don't confuse a shiny paint job with a well-maintained truck.
@Tungsten23
@Tungsten23 9 жыл бұрын
jsmcguireIII, point is if you take care of something, more of a chance it IS well maintained in general. If someone worksout, or is a strongman chances are they take care of their body properly. On the flip-side, if I see a banged up, scratched up, POS truck I will obviously think the driver does not care about their vehicle and is not a car/truck guy. :D
@jsmcguireIII
@jsmcguireIII 9 жыл бұрын
Tungsten23 That is simply your impression of the superficial characteristics of a work truck. I have gotten +300K out of "scratched up POS" trucks and seen shiny rigs in the junk yard that never had an oil change. I also know guys at my 24hr gym who take creatine and other sketchy supplements so there's that. I've lived long enough to learn to look beneath the surface.

Does the paint peel off? If so how long did it take? I'm asking because I went to a body shop to get this done on my Tundra but they said it wasn't worth it because it'll peel off quickly.
@AutoDIY
@AutoDIY 7 жыл бұрын
I have not had any peeling issues, after 2.5 years of driving it does have a few tiny chips in it but that is the nature of anything painted on the front of a truck . This is one of my favorite subtle changes to this truck, I just wish I did it sooner.

So you didn’t have to strip the chrome? Just scuffed, primed and painted?

I recommend just stripping the chrome. Super easy. Just use the Heavy Duty Easy Off oven cleaner. Melts chrome right off plastic

Tires are 305/55/20 BFG K02, lift is 3 inches in the front, 1 inch in the rear with a front differential drop.

Trevor James I picked up the color matched paint from Amazon, the seller's name is "scratch wizard". Beware it is the most expensive spray paint you will ever buy. I imagine there are less expensive ways to go, but their color matching is perfect. Same process could be used for your front and rear bumpers. I bet it turns out great. Good luck with your project.

Looks great man!!! I'm about to paint the surround on my tacoma. Wha kind of clear coat did you use the 2nd time?
@AutoDIY
@AutoDIY 7 жыл бұрын
I used duplicolor automotive clear, here is an amazon link if it helps: amzn.to/2oNDBuz Slow heavy strokes, and it came out like glass, no sanding or buffing needed. Best of luck on your project, I am sure you are going to love the end result.

+Auto DIY update, got a couple of splotches on the top part of the surround but I can fix that later if it becomes an eyesore. I'm kinda nervous about using heavy coats because I don't want any running in the clear coat.

PlastiDip would have been a lot less work and reversible, I just really wanted a subtle factory looking touch and I couldn't be happier with the result.

Do you think the 2000 grit wet sand would have prevented the orange peel before putting on the clear?
@AutoDIY
@AutoDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Sadly no, the orange peel was caused by a bad can of clear. The new can of clear didn't need to be sanded at all. It just came out like glass.

Looks great! Nice work. I have the same truck (Black), looking to do the same thing. Would you considering doing the bumpers with Plasti Dip?
@AutoDIY
@AutoDIY 9 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind comment, I am really happy with the way it turned out too. Yes, I have thought about doing the bumpers with Plasti Dip, I am a huge fan of Plasti Dip, for lots of reasons, number one being that if you don't like it you can always remove it. I am enjoying the new look as it is now, the chrome around the grill was glaring at me, the bumpers don't bother me too much -- yet. Good luck with your Black Tundra, I am sure you will love this change too.

The mirrors were part of the Tow Package in 2008. I did a quick search on Amazon for them and this was the first one that came up: amzn.to/2uuNqPrf but there are tons of other aftermarket options for these mirrors. Thanks for watching and good luck.

+Auto DIY thanks for finding that link, I'll definitely use that in the future. I ended up going with a duplicolor Toyota match, but I don't think I went heavy enough with the coats of paint. I'm happy with the results, but it's not quite as "factory" looking as I would've hoped. Next time! Here's a link to my process/results if you're interested. www.tacomaworld.com/threads/painting-grill-surround-full-write-up.431936/ Thanks again for the advice and the useful video!
