Great beginners tutorial for sure. I'm not being rude, but I'll add a bit to this though. This is all assuming that your intake boots are sealed, ignition timing is correct and valves adjusted properly. If you are running drag pipes the a/f mix and jets are going to be slightly different than if you're running a crossover tube or two into one pipe. The a/f mix can be checked with a vacuum gauge and/or a can of carburetor cleaner too. One more thing. If your timing plug is out or have a see through plug, you can get real close to the proper idle speed if you can blink your eyes and count the blinks in a minutes time as well! Btw, you're hand jammer and suicide clutch is too cool. It's what separates the men from the boys!

Incredibly helpful video. When I turn my fuel mix screw in (lean) the idle increases but it never stumbles. I can turn it all the way in to zero and the bike never cuts off. I down jetted all the way to 26.5/66.5 and it does the same. Right now its jetted at 31/74 it seems to have the best performance but I still cant figure out why im having that issue with the fuel mix screw. I have it set at 1 full turn out. I share in your confusion. That part was not clear and the wording contradictory. I think what he meant was, if you unseat the idle screw all the way the butterfly valve will close. So by “turning it in” 1/2 turn, the butterfly valve will open slightly letting the engine idle just enough. If you seat the idle screw all the way, the engine will race once you start the bike. I have a S&S Super E on my 2001 Indian Scout with a stock tear drop air filter & stock pipes. I’ve been fiddling with this carb for a while now & learning through trial & error. The verbiage on the instructions, written or spoken, can be confusing when actually performing the factory settings tuning.

I too did the 3rd gear 50-70 roll on and thought it was pulling pretty good, then did the 5 sec full throttle in 3rd gear, super lean plugs as well ha. Thanks brotha! So on mine the 72 main and 29.5 pilot works great with my long but open pipes and teardrop S&S cleaner. For this velocity stack I need the 74. I liked your video on the S&S. I just put a brand new carb on a 79 FXR. Started as you and the instructions suggested. But I can't get it right. One of the problems is the mixture adjustment. When I turn it in, the engine stumbles a bit. But when I screwed it out, the idle kept getting faster and faster. It sounds bad. I typically like a slower idle. Any suggestions?
@greasesgarage3 ай бұрын
Yes, pay close attention to that segment in the video because it’s two different things you’re adjusting. Set your mix screw first. Halfway between where it stumbles and where it spikes the revs. Once the mix is set, THEN you can adjust your idle screw to whatever idle you like. But the mix screw itself is NOT an idle adjustment. Hope this helps

Grease! Man, you are my go-to bike/chopper guru now. I built a chopper from the ground up and your videos were invaluable, especially with the wiring. I have a carb question. My donor motor is a 250cc Chinese Honda clone that came off a cheap dual sport and the carb is pretty bare bones; the only adjustment screw is the idle. I put a pod air filter and straight pipe on it. It runs perfectly with even power all through the throttle range, and there's no popping or backfiring when I let off the gas. Can I take this as an indication that the mixture is good enough that I don't need to re-jet the carb? I don't want to ruin the engine by running too lean, but it seems to be fine as is.
@greasesgarage7 ай бұрын
I would take it as a good indicator absolutely. If you were lean you’d experience some poor performance and popping out of the carb. If you wanted to be extra sure, run it wide open for a stretch, 5-6 seconds at top gear full throttle, and kill the motor and coast to a stop. Pull the plug and check it for color. It should be a golden brown. Basically anything besides clean white or cooked. That will be your truest test but again, not hearing popping or poor performance is quite a positive sign already

The intermediate controls between idle and about half throttle. The main is the opposite. You can switch just one, and should switch just one, depending on which areas need the tweaking

@@greasesgarage thank you so much for taking the time to let me pick your brain, last thing. When reading plugs once they burn one way like lean can they burn another way? Rich to lean lean to rich or do I have to replace em each time to check how they burn

No need to replace. If they get rich and you run lean it’ll burn the carbon off. And vice versa as well

@greasesgarage Жыл бұрын
Look behind the screw at the tab it presses on. Turn it in until it just begins to make contact with the tab. Then go 1/2 a turn more. It’s not a super fine science with that one though so don’t stress it, anywhere in that region will get you going and if your bike sounds like it’s at wide open throttle just back that screw off

What if your engine idles to high when you stop at a light and then slowly drops
@greasesgarage5 ай бұрын
The most common cause for that is an air leak. It idles high because it’s still drawing as you come to a stop but once you’re stopped the draw slows and it eventually settles back down

I've had a few CV carbs never a problem. easy to put jets in , and tune. never broke down or messed up. I got this S&S super garbage "E" carburetor on a 94 wide glide and what a piece of crap. Impossible to tune. bike won't run I've checked everything else I'm done. I'm pulling this piece of garbage off. And I'm not even going to sell it to anyone else. I'm going to destroy it.

This is an early one cause it doesn't have a jet for the air bleed. So I might wrong but I think it's 25 years old at least what I read.

@jimgagne38013 ай бұрын
Just a stock 80 inch EVO , 94 dyna wide glide. It was a friends bike but it would foul plugs, then he died and I inherited the bike.it didn't run though. So I dropped the Boal and it had a 76 main and a 29.5 pilot. The mixture screw was at 2 turns out and the accelerator pump screw was at one turn the plugs were fouled but it would only start with the choke on and run that way till you foul the plugs. It's getting gas, I went back to the factory settings and new plugs, and it won't run at all. Unless I use starting fluid then it dies. I've changed to 66 a main and 68, and a70 main and went down to a 28 pilot . But it just doesn't run till i spray starting fluid. I don't really want to give up on it cause it's American but I'm thinking I have to either take it off and completely rebuild it and start over, or try a CV that I have laying around that's a new take off. And see if that is the problem, or maybe it's something else. I'm, just old and tired off working on stuff after I get out of work as everyone rides by my house enjoying life before the world goes to crap...yes I am whining. 😢
@greasesgarage3 ай бұрын
@jimgagne3801 if it’s any help, I run a 72 main 29.5 pilot on that same size motor. I could possibly go down to a 28 pilot though. All my settings are here in this video. If that doesn’t get you running, I would be willing to bet that there’s a problem outside of the carb or with an air leak at the manifold

Followed your instructions but i was also confused with the idle instructions?🤔 Can't turn in after seated so i left it at that. Started bike and idled so fast I'm glad it didn't blow motor but after i turned it back out to where it idled low turn it back up to where i thought idle was good bike is running the best it ever did. Delete that video and redo a new one explaining idle adjustment before someone blows a motor.
