Thanks for awesome riding day, it was really nice to test your Honda now as it is tuned to top. I'm sure you will have plenty of fun times ahead with it!

I’m on day 20 of a 23 day trip in the US on a 2019 690 Enduro S. We’ve done 3,600 miles leaving Boston down to Tennessee then up to the Canadian border on a mix of road, Trans America Trail and Backroad Discovery Routes. The trip is superb but the bike amazing. I have a Seat Concepts seat, Nomad rally tower, Rade Garage range extender and Kineo tubeless wheels. 6 or 7 hours a day is no issue and fuel economy staggering at 80 mpg (UK) the average. I’m keeping up with a Tiger 900 so not slow. With my Rade Garage range extender 300 miles is easily possible with a safe margin. The traction control is utterly superb and easily the best gizmo.

Been thinking about selling my 690 and getting a 300L. I am in my mid 60’s and my 690 is a blast to ride. My issue is that bike allows me to write checks that may skills and body can’t cash…. I constantly find my self going much faster than usual and have had more that a few pucker moments on that bike Thanks for posting this, it was very informative

It is an adrenaline machine for gravel but to be quite honest here I have just as much fun with the Honda especially now that it's slightly tuned. It gives me all the excitement me and my riding talent needs 😁 I'm still keeping the Tuareg for longer trips for now.. but I have even thought about going with 1 bike garage and only keeping the small little Honda. Thats how much I like it 😄

@@PatchedBandit yeah I still have my Tenere for longer trips.. so I think I will go ahead and sell the 690.

Now that I'm in my 60's as well, I understand what you're saying. I recently had major heart surgery, which deflated my delusions of invincibility, and decided to sell my Kove 450 Rally (fast and nimble) because it's much better than I am and the 300L seems less likely to kill me. I have a Triumph Scrambler 1200 xe that I use as my road bike and a 300L for dirt trails seems like a good idea. I just subscribed to this channel as I am interested in 300L content. Thank you.

Remember 2019 and onward KTM 690 and Husqvarna 701s came with the updated LC4 engine with the counter balancer that significantly reduced engine vibrations.
@PatchedBandit20 күн бұрын
I havent felt much difference even though people say this all the time.
@teajayoh18 күн бұрын
Dumb question here... But you mean to say you've compared the new 2019+ KTM/Husq to your 300L and the 300L still vibrates less?
@PatchedBandit18 күн бұрын
Yes. Waaay less. crf300 is easily the smoothest single I have ever tried.

The new Austrian 700's with more effective counter-balancing are a step ABOVE the older versions. I'm hoping Pankl will be called upon to engineer a better transmission spread for these big singles like they did for the 250/350 six-speeds dirt bikes.

Looking for a new light dual sport and my issue is that a 300L with for example rally raid suspension is getting too close to a gasgas es 700 and the husqvarna 701 enduro considering the price. 8000 EUR vs 10500 EUR.
@PatchedBandit6 ай бұрын
They are very different bikes too. If you are cross shopping between those options I would urge you to have a good long test ride on both before deciding. Im sure your decision is much easier after riding both if you havent done so yet.

Nice comparison. Would be also nice to do a comparison on a more technical road. Bumps, inclines, some rocks, tight turns... The lighter smaller Honda may have advantages. Maybe the ktms suspension and the low end grunt would have advantages.
@PatchedBandit6 ай бұрын
Honda is definitely more nimble in technical stuff. We had very little time unfortunately but I might do an episode later from an actual Enduro track. Both of us will find the limits of our cabapilities as a rider before either bike even breaks a sweat though 😂

We have tighter trails in Bavaria. The little power the CRF 300 makes is not a disadvantage over here. I would like a smooth transition from closed throttle to gas. Like my carburreted Transalp 600, so smooth. Made it easy to ride on ACT Croatia. Just coming back. But I see the temptation of KTM power ;-) Happy rides, Günter/Nürnberg
@PatchedBandit6 ай бұрын
We have a lot better trails here too but unfortunately Antti didn't have time to ride any longer so this was a bit hastily made. We live hundreds of km away from each other and Antti was just passing by 😁 I don't miss the KTM power in the forest 99% of the time riding the Honda. With the Tuned Honda I'm actually most of the time not even using all the power it has to give now. And as the Honda is a bit more suitable for someone my size and it is definitely more nimble I still do prefer the Honda in deep forest and technical tracks. KTM690 could be a nice option for a parallel twin bike though.

@@PatchedBandit A good second bike. I really like that it's in such a good condition after all those years. Some people have excellent reliability on KTMs, others have trouble. Keeping my fingers crossed, Günter/Nürnberg

A lot of people complain about the vibration of the older 690's - the 2019+ bikes are much smoother apparently due to a second counterbalance shaft, but have lost some of that raw animal feel of the original 😊
@PatchedBandit6 ай бұрын
I would have to ride both back to back but just from memory I can't say there is a big difference. The new bike did vibrate just the same if you ask me 😅 Here's the vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnKQn4WLlMSSkMk

Thinking I need to do some similar tuning with my 300l. How is your low end now? I do ride it on slower technical trails and need to lift the front in numerous situations. Seems the stock bike while running out of steam in upper rpm's has decent low end.
@PatchedBandit6 ай бұрын
With the dyno chart 550 performance provides for the 1.0 tune low end gains a very small boost but the upper rev range is drastically better. So you have no penalty at any rev range even low end by doing the mod I did to my bike but you are not gonna gain a lot of low end either. All my CRF episodes here: kzbin.info/aero/PLjuLZY6TnpPnQWrKL7vgN6eCmeAY5Ea4Z
@riscracing55384 ай бұрын
To really improve low end you need to upp the compression to 11,5:1-12:1. Or install the 301cc Kit developed by Ari Henning, but you have to spend a bit of money....
