Ted figured into one of my most perfect days…I was 15 years old (so spring 1972)…skipped school with a friend, took the train into NYC, had my first drink in a bar (I was 15, but the bartender never even glanced at us as he poured the beers) and then caught a matinee of JCS at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. Ted was otherworldly as Jesus! I’m nearly 67 and remember it like it was yesterday! Glorious….

But it wasn't out of his control. (Take me before I change my mind). He could have changed his mind and opted out. The Bible shows that he was afraid, not angry or confused. The fact is he was born for this. He and the Father came up with this plan of redemption, knowing that humans couldn't keep the Laws of God. However, a sacrifice was required as the cost of sin (not keeping the laws of God with 100% perfection). This is what the sacrificial lamb symbolized: the sacrifice of the only person who hadn't sinned (and therefore was the only one qualified to do it).

Agreed. One of the greatest evils perpetrated by Christianity was to teach that humanity is worthless without the intercession of "God." God did not write or sing this: people created it. It is called "art," and humans have been creating it for thousands of years- and not because of divine intercession. I fact, I think the creative urge is a direct response to a universe where we are on our own, free and unhindered to do great things (or not), so that we will be remembered, or forgotten. What's more inspiring- to imagine some all-powerful being humming this tune for Andrew Lloyd Webber to copy, or ALW just sitting at a keyboard and dreaming it all up? I too am an atheist, and I have come to appreciate this music far more than I ever did when I was a "believer."

I remember being freakishly adamant that we were not going to miss this movie and devised a plan for the to "run-walk" the many blocks to the movie theater (run one block, then walk one block, etc.). This may sound crazy but I discovered this song in the most incredible way. I have been through a lot of pain the last 3 years. Going hard for god then falling back down getting back up and fall again. I was feeling weak and tired. I pray in tounges ALOT! I got to a point where I was so confused about everything or if what I was doing was right . I prayed to God to give me a fruitful mind that he understand me that I’m not alone in feeling the way I do and to restore my faith I need a sign! I pulled up google voice translator and prayed in tounges shortly and briefly. It translated to “why should I die song” I googled the song and this was the first video that popped up. I slowly backed away from my phone with my hands covering my mouth as I smiled and laughed. I could feel my faith being restored in that moment . I’m not saying google voice can translate tounges I prayed for this particular thing and was desperate . I think God knew that. 🤷‍♀️

Sometimes everything comes together. The song and musical performance are incredible, but the cinematography also amazes. Jesus gazed fixed on heaven, desperately trying to get closer to God, climbing the mountain alone (foreshadowing his suffering), wind ruffing his hair and face, passing these jagged rocks on sandals in the dark, ending at the dawn, drained but with resolve. You don't get this element in theater, it greatly enhances the experience. This is a prime piece of art.

Ahhh. but he never asked me if I wanted this . Still hasn't, and i still don''t. So.... thanks, but no thanks.. i would never ask anypne to die for me, bu tthere are people I would die for. I guess that makes me a sinner. I Oh well...

@@equisde8026it means He died in our place. So Jesus died on the cross and was judged for our sins/ wrongdoings. Because he was judged in our place, God will not judge us for our sins now if we believe in Jesus as Lord, savior and God. We are forgiven because of Jesus.

@@philipb7400 now thats just dumb. why would a bloke have to die for god to forgive other people? the whole thing makes zero sense

@@equisde8026 because that man is the Son of God and one with God. He’s not just any man, but fully man and God. We also believe Jesus is perfect.

I saw Ted perform this live back in 1993. He nailed it! It was awesome to behold. Also, it's a heck of a tune to listen to in these trying times..

You are so lucky. I cannot see him perform live as I do not live in the US but I really love his performance in the film.

I love musicals, particularly from the 60's & 70's. Amongst all the songs of all the musicals I love nothing comes close to this performance! Ted Neeley gives his all to every word of every line, wether it's soft & gentle or screaming "Wwhhhhyyyyyyyyyy?" that man elevates this song so much!
