I have a vintage style Squier walnut. I didn’t like the tuning machines on it, so I put new ones on it. The tuners had pin pegs in the back of them. So I had to drill holes for those two. A reamer is a wonderful tool to have when you’re doing this, that way you don’t mess up the guitar. A friend I have is an aircraft mechanic. He knows how to work on technical things. He helped me do this and it came out perfect. I am very happy with my results but it can be done. I didn’t mess up my guitar at all. It came out beautiful. That’s a good idea to drill a hole in the box. Thanks for the video. Have a great day. Love it.👍🏼😁🎸

Excellent video. I'm a retired carpenter aspiring to be a luthier, I just need to learn the tricks of the trade which it seems you have down. So I'll be spending a couple hours a day with your video's . Thanks much for taking the time, it is certainly appreciated.

Thanks for sharing another useful tech tip. Your process is clear and easy to understand so anyone needing to open up the tuning key holes should have no problem as long as they follow the process you laid out.

Thanks for this video! I just bought some Hipshot Vintage 8.5mm tuners for my old Peavey Predator. The stock holes are not quit 8mm and I don't trust myself to go to 10mm. I am also going to use a rattail file to ream the remainder of the wood out rather then use a drill.

Thanks man! I need to make larger holes for dpdt push pull pots and this looks like it'll work for that. Running the bit through always eats the coat. The nut covers it, but still. Nice to do it right.

Your reamer must be sharper than mine. It took a lot of turns to get 10mm. Also 10mm bits are hard to find unless you buy online.

great video! I had to do something similar to this when I upgraded the pots in my epiphone. The new pots were wider so I had to drill out the holes to push them through. But I used a drill for the whole thing... haha... probably not super smart but it worked out. :) Keep up the great videos!

Excellent demo. I just did it on my Gretsch Electromatic (with Grover tuners). Also thanks for the link for the reamer, I honestly couldn't believe that the salesmen at the local Home Depot, Sears, and Ace Hardware knew what a reamer was .

That tool or a step drill bit also works great on a Fender pickguard. Just go slowly as the plastic peels away easily.

Front bushings have a smaller diameter than the tuner. If the tuner fits in the front the bushings will be loose.

I can see the point of ruing the drill through if you have long bushings, but many are quite shallow. The tuner is usually stepped at the base, so there is a place where the hole does not have to be the same as the top or bottom. There are actually speciality stepped peg hole reamers. I don't run a doll through, and have never had an issue.

After the hole is reamed, isn't there a chance that the bushing may not fit securely? So the tuner would fit through the back, but then the bushing may be too loose when pushed through from the other side.

@stevesolo16

A snug hole just adds to the strength. Are you really so simpleminded as to need a video to picture the drilling of a hole? Stewart McD sells stepped drills. Why don't you buy one and stick it in your hole?

you really only have to do the back, lots of manufacturers (bespoke and boutique i mean) will actually do a tiered diameter hole anyway to make sure there is full contact with the tuner

Is there a way to identify an 8.5mm vs a 10mm hole in the head stock without removing the factory tuning machines? My factory tuning machines have a 10mm nut with a washer that has an outer diameter of 0.548 inches. My factory tuning machines appear to be (without having removed them of course) very similar if not exact to the specifications for the Grover 502 series locking tuning machines. My guitar is a Gretch as well, just a different model (G2655 Streamliner, manufactured in Indonesia by Samick), and I was hoping to avoid purchasing the extra tools.

Novice question…Maybe I missed the explanation in the video but what is the purpose of using the reamer? Why not just use the drill bit?
@Hickalum
@Hickalum 3 жыл бұрын
Lots of reasons ! When the drill hits the raw headstock it will skip and jump slightly making a horrible jagged mess. Even with the tape a drill is likely to crack the clear coat finish. Without the reamer it’s hard to know the drill is centred exactly on the old hole. The reamer will guarantee a circular hole - the drill is likely to give a slightly oval hole.

Anyone else's heart stop when he puts the drill in the headstock? Even with the front and back of the hole reamed, I'd be afraid of the drill bit possibly binding and causing a split.

I don't understand why all guitar companies don't make their holes so you can drop in nicer replacements tuners. They probably want you to void your warranty.
