Again very informative Peter, thank you. Your unbiased videos set you apart from the rest. What might be a nice idea for a video is not only tuning for accuracy, but also for efficient air consumption. This is achieved by using a 20% higher regulator pressure than the pressure at which you have your ideal speed. This all without losing accuracy.
@VikingAirgunner5 күн бұрын
Thanks buddy and thanks for your input 👍👍 Im actually using your suggested way of tuning in my next video. Not meant as a tuning video, but it does show that there is accuracy and low spread when using higher reg preasures. The thing about air consumption when tuning with high reg preasures is that you use less air pr shot, yes - but you loose shots by not having them available at the end of the fill. So if you compare two reg settings. 110 and 150 bar. You will have to fill earlier with the high reg 🙂 So 40 bar earlier. Overall yes it gives more shots, but not pr fill. I have been avoiding the high reg, but after producing my upcomming video I must say that it shoots really well like this 🙂
@Nedy_C5 күн бұрын
@@VikingAirgunner Totally agree! It is often misunderstood, but the most efficient air usage does not necessarily mean the highest shotcount per fill. As you pointed out in one of your videos, spread is important, but nothing to fixate on. Within 10 fps you are okay for accuracy. Looking forward to your next video and findings, thanks!

Thank you Peter. I always get some tid-bits of information from you. I am now looking at the dynamics of each adjustment and how they play a part in the overall tune at any given velocity choice. As we can see by your examples, you can archive the same velocity with many different combinations of the 4 settings. Which would lead one to believe that there are possibly 100's if not 10's of thousands of combinations to achieve the ideal tune for a particular slug or pellet by weight. We haven't even begun to talk about the variations in manufacturing between new run's of each model airgun. Liners and barrel differences and twist rates??? An endless pursuit it is, and oh what fun!!! Thanks again 😎

Thanks for the video Peter, sorry to hear of the slight inconsistency with the M4, I think watching your excellent production and attention to detail you will get to the bottom of it. Being an M3 user, I cannot shed any light unfortunately but one thing I have noticed on my M3, is it has a sweet spot at a certain bottle pressure (~200-220 bar) where it stacks slugs. I know you have fitted the first stage reg but with the sensitivity of the valve return spring and knowing bottle pressure does make a different (for me at least) it maybe worth investigating. Try with different bottle pressures and see if that has any effect.

Try maxing out your hammer spring and valve adjuster for what ever reg setting you desire. Once you find your max velocity, adjust your valve tell the velocity begins to drop. Then lower your hammer spring adjuster until the velocity drops too. Adjust your hammer wheel until you find your desired velocity or accuracy

New toys are always nice. I am not entirely ready for the M4 yet so I just bought a second M3. With my first M3 (5,5mm) I used the advanced tuning to set it at 43J with 18gr pellets. My new one however is a 7,62mm and that one works better with the standard method to get to 94J with 44.8gr pellets. Both very moderate power levels for the respective calibers.

again Peter, excellent and informative video. If memory serves me correctly, the M4 has eliminated the first regulator. For me, my Impact MKII and M3 required a few shots to "wake up" the system. I noticed your M4 initially produced the highest velocity on the first shot, then settled in for the follow-up shots. Maybe the lack of pressure control from the bottle to the shooting regulator, really needs an intermediary control regulator. Secondly, it seemed to me that the velocity of 990-995 seemed to produce the best results. Slightly faster, but sometimes just a few feet per second makes a real difference. But overall, impressed with your honest, unbiased review. Glad I've kept my M3 and MKII. But knowing you, you'll find the equation that works.

Hey buddy 🙂 FX eliminated the 1st reg on the M4, so I installed one and it seems to have a positive effect 🤗 Im working on several velocities but with such an overall inconsistant gun it is difficult to tell what really works. The M3 was much easier to work with. Sold it yesterday and the guy asked me to set it up shooting 13 gr ZAN with the standard STX Superior liner 600 mm liner. Took me perhaps 20 shots. I can assure you that Im nowhere near that with the M4. But when I sort it out and the gun becomes consistant I will be able to interpet in a much different way.

Great content thank you for taking the time to be so thorough! It’s been really helpful for me as a new FX owner to start figuring out this contraption. A couple tuning questions that hopefully you can help out with. On the advanced tune, where do you put your macro and micro adjustments? Do you center them on 8 and go from there with the front valve? When tuning what do you accept for extreme spread and standard deviation? Is a 5 shot group a big enough sample size to establish those numbers? What is your procedure if you tune to a velocity but the accuracy isn’t there? Do you go a certain fps higher and lower and start again or make minor adjustments from where you are? Thanks in advance and I look forward to seeing more!
@VikingAirgunner24 күн бұрын
Good questions👍 The position of the power wheel is irrelevant - see my explanaition in the video again. Spread is acceptable to a certain extend. For me 7 is the max. Fine adjustments for the right velocity/accuracy is done with small adjustments to hammer tension and the front valve adjuster. Usually accuracy lies within +/- 10 fps 👍

I hope that I will get the advanced method to function as well as in the M3. How much torque do you use on the liner nut?
@SniperBrM326 күн бұрын
@ I tighten as much as I can by hand and then give it just a small turn with the wrench and make the grouping. If it’s still not good, I give it another small turn with the wrench. I also recommend that you remove the carbon fiber tensioner kit. They didn’t work for me. I only use the barrel clamp that has the two screws and the original shroud.

I recently started shooting slugs (Knock Outs) out of my Crown. I found that I can get the same speed with both a high reg pressure of 160 and a low of 145 bar, but of cause with different hammer spring settings. In my case, the lower reg pressure gave the least amount of spread and tightest groups. My theory is, that every liner with whatever support it has, react different. One might vibrate less with a short high pressure burst of air, and another might "like" a longer low pressure burst to push the pellet. Peter, your front valve restrictor will alter the airflow just a little, and this may be enough to give a bigger spread. For your M3 it did the oppesite, and this may be the case for other M4's with another barrel setup (or another hammer weight, or spring rating, or.....). Fun but also frustrating.

Hi Peter,Most enjoyable video to watch and learn from you,I can understand from you're explanation the process of tuning etc but I'm curious how you know the optimum speed required etc.(975 FPS etc)is this from previous experience or is there a ballistic chart etc,I also agree with you explaining the anomalies that can occur like temperature etc,I wonder is it that you get some inconsistencies because your M3 had the second regulator allowing the rifle to be more consistent owing to the step down in pressures from cylinder to transfer port,just a thought,I am looking forward to your next offering and thanks for sharing your extreme knowledge and experience with us all,kind regards,Phil.
@VikingAirgunner26 күн бұрын
Hi Phil Thanks for your comment 🙂 The 975 fps is the result of lots of testing different velocities. It doesnt mean that it will be the perfect velocity tomorrow or with a 5 c change in temperature. It will shoot pretty well every day at 975, but for those perfect groups it might be +/- 10 fps 🤓 I do have the 1st stage reg installed. Made a video about it that you are welcome to check out 🙂
@Tobias-j7y5 күн бұрын
My guess is that the inconsistency comes from the valve rod riding on o rings free-riding against a cone shape hole. The o ring extrudes because it is not seated against a flat surface. Every shot needs to break the rod free, wearing the o ring down and creating gunk on the valve rod. The gunk (plus the stiction) create the inconsistency (and the need for numerous warm up shots after letting the gunk sit for more than 2 minutes). FX is aware of the issue btw (even Ernest made them aware long ago), they just don’t care cause impacts sell anyway.

Great tutorial as always. My M4 valve definitely isn’t as sensitive as yours until it gets down to like 2.5 lines. I’ve been super frustrated with tuning my M4 and it staying consistent… unless I use high reg pressures. I’m shooting .22 but similar weight pellets and slugs (14-20 w/700mm) to you and I only find the gun will stay consistent if I use high reg pressures. I’ve been at 140bar for weeks now. It’s range day today and I plan to test up to about 160. Kind of makes sense if you think about the guys who steer the development of these things. Most of them are running around 170 bar.
@VikingAirgunner26 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment John👍👍 The high reg might be the way to go. I just find the adjustments of power wheel and quick tune system to get big steps in velocity by a single click. But when the only using the valve return spring for adjustment it might be the solution 🤔 I will dive right in to that method tomorrow 😃
@JohnHowerton22326 күн бұрын

Hi Peter! Iam also a new m4 fx owner and have to say iam struggling to tune this gun properly. Your videos are very truthfull and honest , that is why i would like to congratulate you!ii have seen most of your material and would like to thank you for all your effort. A quick question : after installing 1 st reg, you believe it has improved the gun as to the consistency of the fps. If yes in what way? Does that mean that if i leave the gun overnight and after 10 initial shots the gun will give me the same velocity tuned otiginally? This is not the case for me now. Every time it fluctuates and gives me a steady, but different speed!
@VikingAirgunner24 күн бұрын
Thanks for your kind comment 🙂 It seems that the 1st reg has given the gun a push in the right direction. Now I dont have to retune it so many times from full to empty bottle. Main issue now is all the wake up shots. Takes around 15 shots. It does change in velocity but not as much. Still not the same performance as the M3 and generally not happy with the gun. It can shoot some great groups but a few shots later it will loose stability. Working on figuring it out!

Yesterday i was shooting pellets,,,, yes i know a man just gotta try something new once in a while. Anyway first shooting 10.4 grain JTS dead centers i was all the way down to 56 BAR on the regulator, so as i ran out of those i put in some Monster redesigns, resulting in a 800 FPS speed. And the MRD pellets did not fly well at all at that speed, so in 2 small adjustments of the regulator i approached 900 fps and a little past that, and then the accuracy was another world ( shooting just 30 M ) BTW the end pressure for the MRD pellets 67 BAR for 907 fps, and laser like accuracy at 30 M The shot shed yesterday was just 5 deg C, so shooting tomorrow both the oven and diesel heater will be turned on, CUZ i like it hot just like my Epic Two airgun. BTW #2 like your phone holder, i have also made one but not yet remembered to bring it to the range. I have changed tweaking procedure and i now back off my hammer spring adjuster as much as i possibly can, and then i go up in speed, i use to just go from where i was and up, resulting in me often have to back wayyy off the hammer as i would hit the MAX where cocking the rifle was no longer possible. Not that many knobs on my rifle, or that is there is sort of 1 more knob but on the inside, but adjusting the hammer close time i have to take out the balanced valve in the two, and TBH i have given up touching that CUZ 1 mm in or out and things turn bad real fast. the compact version of my rifle though will probably benefit or have a higher air use as described by SUB12 airgunners. But the 700 mm big boy version i run, not bothering adjusting on that any more.

Another great video. I was wondering if you have the first shots being slow like the mk-3. I have tried your higher velocity then turning down the front adjuster. It still takes 8 or 10 shots until it comes up to where I want it. It just don't work on my mk-3. I will keep at it. Thanks again.
@VikingAirgunner23 күн бұрын
On the M4 I still have slow in the first shots. Tested it today actually and it was almost up to speed in the 6th shot (-6 fps) Full recovery took 15 shots 😳 Cheep trick is to start out by increasing the power wheel by two click and the turning it down as the velocity raises. Not a perfect solution, but it beats shooting 40 fps below 🤔

@@VikingAirgunner Yea, I mean you are shooting anyways pretty much from anchored position so.. We been taught to take a shot in bottom of your breath and send it with one motion. I bet from that position your breath control most likely is causing your upper body strain which may cause 1/4 MOA right and up misses. Your left hand pulls on the moment when hammer hits and that tiny recoil comes in the play. Try to not hold the stock, but instead let the gun recoil freely. I bet you will notice difference pretty quick. Second group you shot without breath control, you shot left. Also you shot faster speeds so going over. But looks good bro. Beautiful place to shoot. Grouping might spread also because of temp, air pressure, and too high speeds together. Dense air, moisture.. Makes a big differ. You can see moisture condensating on your gun, and those slugs are not perfect so theres always a small play that aerodynamic forces are working with... You dont even want to start thinking what sudden high pressure changes are doing inside that barrel and how it changes things when humidity in the air goes increases. :)

@VikingAirgunner25 күн бұрын
Hi Thomas, I explained that I was tuning for 975 but that I was finding the right velocity for the day afterwards. The right velocity for the day will shift depending on the mentioned factors, so my velocity can easily change between 960 fps and 990 fps 🙂 975 was an example. The velocity will also change with each tuning method since it changes the harmonics of the gun 🤓
