On heat soak being an issue: an easy fix is to get a friend to help you. One driver, one tuner, so you can always stay on the move and keep air flowing through the engine bay. Especially handy for loud cars that draw attention when street tuning... :lol:

Question - what is the best method for finding best timing on a standalone ECU without a dyno, throughout the rev and load range? Typically knock limitations only happen at full throttle, but I'd want to optimize ignition timing at part-load to help with, if nothing else, fuel economy. I don't have a factory map to tweak as the car originally had a carburetor/mechanical distributor, and others who have done similar EFI conversions (VW Beetle) have dramatically different maps from one another so there doesn't seem to be a consensus.

What other steps would you suggest taking after completing this course to get into ECU/EFI tuning? I am very tempted to sign up with the package but I want to know that what you offer allows an individual to understand and take the first steps into a tuning career.

Hey there Nwoke, cheers for the support. We have better than a book with the online course format. Think of it as a modern book that actually shows you what is being discussed instead of trying to explain it with just words and the odd picture. If you haven't been to one already I recommend you start with a free live lesson too, they're really informative for those starting out and quite fun - www.hpacademy.com/free-live-lesson You can find the courses on the website here too: www.hpacademy.com/courses - Taz.

there are calculators on the web which can also translate 0 to 100km/hr or quarter mile times to work out horsepower if the vehicles mass is known. On a great Wall V240 just bashing the cats out dropped the 0 to 100 time from 24 seconds to 16 LoL

haha no need for prayers, it is actually quite hard to get tuning wrong to the point you do damage on a low stress N/A engine like that. You certainly won't make 1000hp no matter how many times you hit 'page up' however 😅 - Taz.

Hello, thank you for sharing your knowledge through these videos. I've noticed the scanner charts and seent that the throttle opening is only up to 85%. Could you please explain why you don't open the throttle further? Is it to avoid the kick-down function in automatic gearboxes? How much of a difference does it make in output between 85% and 100% throttle openings? If you gradually open the throttle and still engage up to 100% while engaging the kick-down switch, at say 3000 rpm, will it still shift down a gear? Thank you for your time and answers in advance.
@mitchellsteindler2 жыл бұрын
That may be throttle angle in degrees, not % throttle. In which case it's normal to not open to full 90 degrees
@aconis253 жыл бұрын
When you had a factory ECU retarding ignition to prevent knock, what would be the right way to avoid it? I mean the ignition advance was already too low, wouldn't be better to enrich that particular sector of rpm/load with fuel?
@kriskan80193 жыл бұрын
For what I know, know occurs with the motor is too hot and that causes the mixture to ignite before ignition. If the cars is running hot it’s bc it’s lean. You can add more fuel and see if it helps if not just have to advance it but a few hp loss is better than a few pulls and then a broken motor

What the requirements for the course and what includes in package
@hpa1013 жыл бұрын
You don't need any prior knowledge, the tools required are covered as you learn more about the tuning process (as what you need will be specific to what you are tuning) the better you understand what tools you will require. There is also a 60-day refund policy so that if you do find you change your mind on tuning yourself, you can get a full refund. This is also why we advise you start learning before buying any hardware. Bit tricky to fill out much more in a comments section, the deal page does have all the courses on it too: www.hpacademy.com/starter-package-with-bonuses-course-series Feel free to take a nose and then email us for more help on making sure it's going to help you reach your own learning goals, we can spend some time going through any other questions you have there with you: support@hpacademy.com - Taz.

Would it be possible to use a narrow band lambda for Road test tuning, or are they not accurate enough?
@hpa1012 жыл бұрын
Not so much the accuracy that is the problem, it's the range. As the name suggests, a narrowband doesn't cover the AFR range that a wideband does. This quick video gives a good explanation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnnOl6Gomtarqdk - Taz.

is there an ecu package you can put in an old school car
@hpa1012 жыл бұрын
Depending on the car you might be able to get an EFI conversion kit but more often you just need to get the odd extra sensor from a different supplier than your ECU which should be your tuner if you're not tuning it yourself. Links below with more detail to help you with this question too. In my own experience the main decision ends up being if you should do this, or an engine swap. What engine you have in there and how good it can be with EFI is the decider, plus cost considerations too - Taz www.hpacademy.com/previous-webinars/106-converting-an-engine-to-efi/? www.hpacademy.com/previous-webinars/120-selecting-a-suitable-ecu-for-your-application/? www.hpacademy.com/technical-articles/which-standalone-ecu-is-the-best/?

What about some kind of device like G-Tech or a phone app that senses g force and all that? Could that help to during your test if you dont have a dyno?
@hpa1013 жыл бұрын
Sort of. In our experience, they are not accurate enough to use with margins of error from 10% to 15% if you're lucky. This is something that might change in the future and we haven't tested every product out there, however we do have comments about them from time to time from people who are passionate they are a great alternative, but, they're really just people who are willing to accept the risks of inaccuracy in their tuning Let's see what the future brings us though, for those with torque based ECUs if a tool like that was accurate it would be really handy to have as an option, although it would never replace a dnyo - Taz.

@@hpa101 i have a G-Force pro and shows the hp and torque curve quite well , great for choosing shift points , but my cars are all old school , no ecu

G force devices are not accurate. But softwares that sense crank or injectors or ignition to extract rpm and then accelaration are very accurate. Providing measures are always made on the same section of a road in the same gear.

How do you know you have made improvements to torque and power levels if you don't have a dyno to give you those numbers? I suppose a better 0 to 60 time would be an indication but how about torque and power figures?
@hpa1013 жыл бұрын
You can't unfortunately. There are some devices out there that try and measure it based of g-forces and other inputs, however, the margin for error on these is too high to really be of any use, safely - Taz.

It can be, but it's all relative and some vehicles lend themselves better to tuning having many options vs others that don't, and cost more. The point there is that just because you happen to own a car doesn't mean it is the best car for you to learn how to tune with cost effectively or even easily - Taz.
