Many aftermarket head units now have an "EQ" or equalizer built in. What is the equalizer for and how do we tune and set it on our head unit car stereo? Should we use an RTA? Is this a replacement for a stand alone Digital Signal Processor (DSP)? Let's go through the process!

Can you do a video for those of us that don't have these resources? An example would be we have a new headuit (maybe not a 1200 dollar one but like 300 or 400) and we have our ears. Lol. A video like that would be cool for us "poors"😂

@@ClarkyXPH that's nonsense. Are you not tuning for the best listening experience? Do you listen to music with your ears or a mic? Sure you can't get perfect equal output by ear but you can get it far far better than if you just do nothing cuz you can't afford fancy gadgets to be used 1 time.

@@Petethebuilderyou don't have the timing adjustment settings do you? I had a 99$ android radio and a 199$ android radio. Both are great since it's basically an android tablet for your car but neither have a very detailed EQ and certainly no crazy timing adhustments of crossovers, heck i dont even have custom presets for my EQ if i change anything theres no going back to how i had it. Infact the 99$ radio seems to have the better EQ, I think the only thing they skipped out of was computing power/RAM, idk much about computers n such but this 99$ radio runs noticeably slower than the 199$ one lol 😅

The Audio Control mic looks great, but there's no Android compatibility. I'm definitely not buying an Apple device as well as the mic just so I can properly EQ my system, as having to buy a device as well as the mic isn't very budget friendly. Are there any Android compatible mics you could reccomend?

What’s that headunit again? Probably expensive haha. Are there others that have that level of eq bands, and also crossover? I’m pretty content with my current setup but just a headunit swap would be nice if it could do more in terms of DSP. Don’t and won’t do much tuning for but that unit does even more than what I want. I do have front dash, doors, and rear door speakers.

Hey I have a question …I have a aftermarket Tesla android head unit that I just installed . But I checked on the equalizer on the head unit . It suxs big time ….the other head unit I had before I changed it was way way better . It gave me full bass…with out needing a sub woofer. But this one I have now doesn’t give me half of what the other unit was giving me . Is there a way to upgrade the equalizer with having to buy another head unit .which I don’t want to do? Please help

I wish someone could help me. I have a 2019 impala premier. Long story short I’ve already completely upgraded everything. 3 amps and a yellow top battery in the back. My troubling question is I have a pacaudio amp pro GM 61, I believe, which ever one works for the Bose system and my question is I have to turn my front and rear amp down because I have a continuous shhhhhhhh sound like when your TV is turned all the way up and there’s nothing playing, that static sound that you get. Not a crackling sound but just that quiet sound. I have been told it’s called white noise. I know there is someone out there that can help me fix this problem. Pac audio told me to switch the little voltage button on the unit and it did drop the static sound a little bit but it is still there. I need to figure out the problem so that I can turn my amps up. There should be no sound coming out of those speakers till the music is turned on. Can someone please help me.

I’ve had my system tuned for distortion with a SMD for distortion and I’m always playing around with the frequencies for my EQ but I’ve always wondered if raising the base on my eq will change the distortion level to a different number that was set by the SMD

It’s like one big infomercial every single episode for audio control for completely unnecessary products as if it’s a $10,000 home theater system it takes two seconds listen to two songs and it’s all personal preference for everybody how they set up a simple equalizer and takes five minutes by ear you know it and I know it a $300 DSP is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard in my life and that’s coming from somebody with a $10,000 home audio
@CarAudioFabrication
@CarAudioFabrication 10 ай бұрын
No offense but if those are your thoughts on DSP you absolutely do not "know audio". Home audio is simple, you are sitting equidistant between the speakers and there's nothing in the way between your listening location and them. Not the case in car audio. Using a DSP is required to achieve the best sound. Why do you think the OEM manufacturers bake a tune into their factory gear instead of just leaving it all flat? Why do you think that OEM tune is different from speaker to speaker? The OEM certainly won't waste a cent on something that isn't beneficial. Yet they do.... because it is essential.

Your content is awesome and has helped me so much in my usually "quick n dirty" sound installs. Currently struggling to set up a little upgrade in my BMW E46 touring - JBL GTO component speakers, a Dynaudio spare wheel sub from a VW Golf and a bit of sound deadening. I can get it sounding good in my driveway, but as soon as I am driving, the deep exhaust note drowns out my admittedly small subwoofer and midbass. My aftermarket head unit has a similar built in DSP - I guess I should tune it while moving?

Hi!! How do I know the frequency range of the equalizer and the Q value, for the Mercedes Benz W177? I am talking about the audio settings of the W177, controlled through the MBUX software at the music settings. Example: I adjusted the equalizer for Bass: +2. I need now to adjust these settings on my Digital Audio Workstation software, that's CUBASE. How do I know what are the settings to do so?
Bass: +2. Does plus two means plus two decibels? If not, how many decibels are plus two? What is the Q of this Bass EQ, from which frequency to which frequency is the Bass zone? Mid: +1. Does plus one means plus one decibels? If not, how many decibels is plus one? What is the Q of this Mid EQ, from which frequency to which frequency is the Mid zone?
Treble: +2. Does plus two means plus two decibels? If not, how many decibels are plus two? What is the Q of this Treble EQ, from which frequency to which frequency is the Treble zone?

Just a heads up, the head unit is using DSP (Digital Signal Processing) internally to adjust the frequency gains for the eq. It is the same thing as the RTA, except one process is automatic and one is manual. If you wanted to adjust the eq without DSP you would see a bunch of analog dials or faders like we saw in the 90's. Your stand alone processor will give you more options of crossovers and eq's, but both are using DSP.

Standalone (or built into amp) DSP is definitely the way to go. As much as I made this video to help explain how to adjust just your head units EQ, I also made it to show people that the features built into the head unit are often limited in comparison to independent DSP. Anytime I use independent DSP on a build someone tells me I'm "wrong" becuase I could have just used the "DSP in the Head Unit" but yeah, they're not the same.

I love all the technical and practical advice you’re giving and it inspired me to upgrade my car audio system. One thing I’d love to see is wireless/ Bluetooth connections to amps or HU’s! Because to be honest... we install upgraded speakers, sound dampening and amplifiers but in the end we stream “low quality” mp3s via Spotify or Apple Music. How to upgrade the Bluetooth signal (muse02 op-amp) be one question or wiring the phone to an amp would be cool to get an insight on. Just to get an even balance between streaming quality and the build quality of the speakers and system amp’s~ (I’m not a audiophile but still wanna get out the best results 😜) For future awesomeness!

Thats why in some cases I still prefer CDs and also I use my AUX in connection with a good quality cable mire than I stream via Bluetooth. I find the sound much better when A) the source is direct and B) the connection is direct and a physical connection. I do have alot of music in digital format, however I always convert them with top quality in mind and don't worry about how much space it takes up. I always convert from a direct source as well (CD usually) I'd rather have 350 *EXCELLENT* sounding tracks than 1000 mediocre sounding ones in the same amount of space. USB drives are cheap these days. I have a few kicking around in the car each with various types/genres of music on them and some mixes. I had gone the hard drive route in the past but found it too cumbersome and hard to find things when I wanted them especially when you're supposed to be, ya know paying attention so you don't hit anything while driving lol. Building a library of music without downloading them (used to do that, LimeWire/FrostWire anyone?!? ;) took years but was essentially free. I borrowed every single one of my friends CD collections, their brother/sister... friends parents etc. Basically anyone who had a decent collection I would ask to borrow for a weekend and just rip them all to my computer. I must have over a couple Tb by now. (2000 Gb)

I use a 128GB USB flash drive loaded with more music than I can ever listen to. If your HU supports it, you could also use an SD card. I find 320 KBPS MP3s perfectly adequate in terms of audio quality. Playing lossless files like FLAC is "ideal", but I don't believe there is much if any benefit in a car since generally speaking it is not a perfect listening environment, and lossless codec is inefficient at storing audio and results in wasted storage.

So I watched this video quite a while back just for the fun of it. But I just “finished” my cars audio set up. Quotations because I’m sure I’ll add to it in the future. But I digress.. I’ve been having a hard time setting my EQ recently. I have a Dayton audio RTA mic I’ve used for a LOOOONG time, so I’m able to set everything level, and I would adjust from there. But I just couldn’t find a target curve I was happy with. Everything just kept like it was missing something. Not enough bass, too ear piercing. I took a screenshot of YOUR target curve and decided just for a fart and a laugh I would copy it (as much as I could anyways. And man. That is a very crisp target curve. I had to make a pretty big drop around 8khz (which I think was my problem. I was just getting way too much high end. But I was nervous to drop it that much and loose that frequency. Not really realizing how much high end frequency it was producing. But I popped up 16khz for a little extra clarity.

My android head unit has a problem where time correction distances entered in are directly copied to miliseconds of delay. So the process of entering each distance from the speaker to the listener results in wildly wrong time compensation. The farthest speaker has the most delay instead of zero. Closer speakers have the least delay. In my case i need to do the math on paper and just enter the delay in ms.

Hey mark love your channel. I'm just getting into car audio systems, but I'm working on a budget of about 400-600$ what equipment would you recommend and what brands? Also I'm using a factory head unit. I really would appreciate a in depth personal run down. Thanks man.

I don't have a DSP and all I have is The equalizer that's built into my Kenwood deck. It's not quite as extensive as the one in this one but it's 13 band. I am running dual 12-in subwoofers and I know you said not to do it but it is adjusted in the shape of a smiley face. My question is what happens if you set the equalizer on the head unit to a smiley face and then set the equalizer on the phone in the shape of a smiley face? I do not have an SMD but I do have an oscilloscope that I use to set the gain correctly. Are there any presets that work well for an equalizer or is it just basically what sounds the best?

What would be a decent/reasonable priced double DIN with at least 3 sets of 4V preouts and at minimum a 10 band equalizer? I prefer Pioneer as that is what I used in the past. I'm just getting back into car audio after being away for a few years (wife/job/kids/life/wallet draining fun killers) I'm kidding of course.... maybe.. lol 😆 Anyways just looking for some recommendations so I can start doing a bit of research

Not meant to be anything super involved as a dedicated DSP is the only way to fully optimize. Target curve is how you adjust for what is preferred.

What is the difference between DSP Audio Control and their EQ? Decades ago I had a high end system no DSP but Audio Control Dual 31 band 1/3 Octave EQ. It sounded incredible. When I had my custom build from factory Mercedes SUV you can order their Bang & Olufsen package. It sounds pretty good but not like after market. They won't let you do anything to the system as it would void the warranty for the whole vehicle. When the vehicle is very, very expensive then voiding the warranty is not an option. So I might buy a used car just for the purpose of a sound system to play around with. You can get nice used cars sometimes under 20k.

I’ve the dm810. It’s an amazing piece but the program is really buggy. When you try saving the changes it does so. Once you connect back to it the settings change. It mysteriously links and sums random channels. :/

What do you think about using an iphone with that app for sound tuning? I have an Audison Virtuoso DSP and I find it a little limited compared to your headunit by the number of tweaking points avaliable. Then I get alot of frequency variations by moving the phone up and down the driver's seat. I got filtered front and back with tweeters in the dashboard and coaxial in the back and a sub in the trunk. Cheers!

There's one thing I want to add that might sound like BS,, but it's true, if your only adding an amp and new speakers to your factory radio and you choose one of those line out converters from a local electronics store unfortunately most of those sound like crap and you can use the one in the amp if it has high level input but honestly I've found one brand of line out converters that improves the sound and I believe it blows mostly anything else out the water,,, "Pac line out converter" is what I use n I gotta say it's the best! Can't get them in local store anymore but they use to sell them around 10yrs ago but they stopped selling them and making u buy junk ones anymore leaving a bad taste in your ear,, Online is were u can get the Pac or maybe an actual car audio shop

Does all the speaker wire have to be the same length for the time alignment to work correctly? For example your front door speakers say you have 3m of speaker wire going to the left speaker and 2m going to the right would that affect accuracy of time alignment. Thanks

I'm new to car audio, but I have a question as I have recently had an install done on my car. So when measuring the time correction distance in a car, I've been looking online and a lot of people suggest the formula is to measure the distance between the speaker cone and your head in inches and then minus that from the distance of the subwoofer whilst leaving the subwoofer at 0". So for example, the subwoofer is 89" from your head and the left front speaker is 55". Leaving you with 34" for that speaker and 0" for the subwoofer. In your expertise, does that sound right to you?

Noticed on your RTA results the highs where under the flat line.. wouldnt you want more voice and instrument sounds? After the results you achieve from the RTA do you leave settings alone or adjust to your liking. Im confused on the objective of doing the RTA and not just by ear or likings?
