When I read your comment, I instantly thought of one of those stories where shadows aren't as scary as they seem. So a shadow on the front of each tunnel part, and then something less scary looking (toys, clothes over chairs, etc) on the back. Look at it from the front and its scary, look at it from the back and it is just everyday objects.
