It‘s so interesting to me that as an American, Duck Tales is your first association with Scrooge. In Europe, Donald Duck and all associated characters owe most of their popularity to the comics (and take it from the daughter of a collector - there are A LOT of comics in the Donald Duck universe. I must’ve read hundreds of them, but I‘ve only ever watched one or two Duck Tales episodes). I‘m not sure how popular they are in Finland, but my guess is that Tuomas‘ interest also originates from the greater comic-verse more so than from the show.

I think Tuomas said duck tales is shit? He loves the original comics I think. There is an tv interview where he talks about this
@Quirderph3 жыл бұрын
@@annev6895 That's pretty close to Don Rosa's sentiment about the show as well. (Or at least, he felt that it became subpar after the first season.)

In Finland we learn to read with Donald Duck comics. Very popular in Finland. Donald Duck is n. 1 and for example Mickey Mouse is not, too "besserwisser" to us.
@CH1PP3NDAL32 жыл бұрын
Did not expect the german in the last sentence. Is Besserwisser a common loan word used in Finland? For English speakers, it pretty much means smartass or know-it-all.

Duck Tales is nothing compered to Donald Duck and Scrooge MacDuck comics. Those stories compere to good movies.

This album is based on the original comic novel by Don Rosa (the second famous script artist after Carl Barks) who also draw the cover art of the album. He gave Tuomas some of the original scripts as inspiration. Don Rosa himself was shown in the video =)

Well as Finnish guy I can say that we do appreciate our forests and lakes a lot. And purity of nature. So I know exactly where Tuomas's passion for wonder and nature comes from.

Tuomas would not have his love for Scrooge McDuck from "Duck Tales" (extremely unlikely). In Finland there has been a Donald Duck (Aku Annka) comic book since 1951 ... and it is still running (weekly/biweekly?)! Thus far >3500 individual comic books+multitudes of other comics (specials, classics, ...) have been published in Finland. Including a brilliant one about Finnish history "The Kalevala" [by Don Rosa] Most of Scandinavia have a deep connection to these characters as comic book - and we've grown up with these - much like US Americans have with Superhero's. Don Rosa is well known here as a magnificent writer and artist, and generally considered the 2nd best in both categories - the alltime nr 1. is Carl Barks. Rosa is well known for his homage to the "good artist", by expanding Bark's stories, and continuing the Bark's legacy of action filled and well drawn stories. And also for his work on expanding and explaining Scrooge McDucks life. I'll let some native finns expand on this though.

Here is a clip in Finnish where Tuomas and Tony have a day hiking in Finland. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaq9goSfg9lrq5I Nightwish supports the World Land Trust. If you are interested, here is some information that I have gathered along the way, about the way Tuomas composes and performs. As you can see in the video below, the tech mentions that Tuomas mainly still plays the Korg N364 for the strings and he also mentions that the backing tracks are played live on a computer with Pro Tools. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJXLhJ6cl62LgMU In the video below they mention that Tuomas makes all the arrangements and lays down the basic tracks for the orchestra using the Korg keyboard with the pads, then passes that to the co-arranger Pip Williams that creates the orchestral notations, then they record each instruments with the London Philharmonic orchestra and the choirs on hundreds of separate tracks, so Tuomas can later re-arrange them in Pro Tools, if he feels the need. So from watching videos like those, interviews with Tuomas and live performances, what I can gather, and please note that I not a pro musician, is that Tuomas uses mainly the N364 to play the strings and piano in the softer sections, and from watching live shows, to me he seems to play the keyboards in a more percussive manner instead of the usual legato style, so sounds to me like the legato orchestral backing comes mainly from the Pro Tools tracks and Tuomas is primarily embellishing with percussive strings and sometimes others orchestral instruments, to give it some rock accents, so it does not sound to smooth and flowy, which would not fit with the Metal sound of Nightwish. Just my opinion and please if there are pro musician that have pratical experience and valid arguments, as to why I am wrong on some points or all of it, please do not hesitate to let me know. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIm5lWyeZcZ0mbs

Thanks! I more or less lost "The Last Sled" out of sight. Just 2 remarks. 1) Contrary to the USA Duck Tales (and Scrooge!!!) are still HUGELY popular in Europa. No child grows up with out it and many grown ups still read the weekly comic even befor their children do! It is not only Tuomas' passion. 2) In Europe nature, protecting nature and preserving nature are part of our daily life. Coming from The Netherlands (yes, Floor is Dutch as well) we even say "Finland IS nature". That is why nature is so prominently present in many Nightwish songs. Nightwish is also official ambassador and promotor of the nature preservation organisation "World Land Trust".

And Ducktales itself may have also gotten a popularity upswing in America now, thanks to the recent reboot (even if it wasn't entirely faithful to the original comics.)

Don's "The Life and Times..." is done in that manner of a real illustrated biography, with innumerable references to real places and times. Theodore Roosevelt even makes an appearance or two (who knew that it was a young Scrooge who convinced Roosevelt to go into politics). The collection won an Eisner, the comics' industry's equivalent of the Oscar. Don's predecessor, the great Carl Barks (who created Scrooge, Duckburg, and much more) influenced many folks, including George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.

I have the box-set of the books t go with the CD of this glorious album. You can find it on Amazon here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/1683962540/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Don was doing a signing (forget if it was in Finland or not) and Tuomas was there and told him he was going to make a soundtrack for the books. Don was not familiar with Nightwish or Tuomas at all and was a bit bemused, and sort of forgot about it (some long-haired metal guy is gonna what? um . . . okay) but Tuomas got back in contact with him and told him he was finalizing some things with the London Philharmonic (also who he works with for Nightwish btw) and sent some preliminary recordings for Don to listen to. Don said he was a bit concerned about how it might sound but by the second song, was in tears at the beauty of the thing, so when Tuomas asked him to come for some of the recording and the release, Don was more than happy to. Don also did the sketch used to make the album cover (and like my great uncles who worked animation also scoffed at his own scribbles and credited everyone else for the loveliness, claiming to be out of practice and no where near as good as in his youth). As an aside The Johannas singing on the album (Tuomas' wife and Johanna Iivanainen and her husband Mikko, who also plays guitar on this) have a project called Altamullan Road, and it too is some great sounding music.

Well i just can say as a Finn perspective that these Donald duck comics were huge part of our youth in the 80-90' era and there was two great artist that draw those comics, Carl barks and Don Rosa. Don rosa obviously had far more detailed drawings an more interesting stories with these characters than the other one.

Life and times of Scriige McDuck is not based on Ducktales, but pretty much vice versa. Also the comic is not some random weird comic its a Eisner award winning series sometimes mentioned as the best comic ever made! Definetly not just a weird thing from Toumas

From what I understand this isn't just a children's comic, but more of a graphic novel. It's supposed to be packed with life lessons and philosophy. I like that you explore this album a little more, not many people do that. I had a bit of trouble with the audio, the song was fine, but your voice was so soft, I sometimes found it difficult to hear what you were saying.

Children's comic? Not a such thing at all. My wife keeps insisting that it is her name in the Aku Ankka magazine order so she is the one who reads it first. Then me and the kids will fight who's next...

Tuomas has been a big Walt Disney duck tales fan...and Scrooge is his favorite. He wanted to tribute the comic and the creator Mr. Don Rosa with this project and says to be so honored to be able to work with him in this song and on the whole album. Don said to be so happy and proud too cause he feels how much Tuomas is to his comics.

No ... no ducktales. Please do not mix Ducktales with the legendary comics (or graphic novels) from Carl Barks and Don Rosa. Life and Times of Scrooge has won Eisner award (comic oscars) and makes Scrooge a real literature character, not just an animated miser doing inane things in childrens animation. I love this book, I love every Don Rosa comic, and I vehemently hate all iterations of Ducktales. They are something completely separate from each other.
