I read that the 997/987.2 engines go south as well - there’s a laundry list of failure modes. The only ones that are bullet proof are the turbo and GT3 cars using the Mezger block and the newer non M9 engines.

I'm excited for you guys as well! I just had an engine failure on my 987.1 Base Cayman... snapped timing chain on bank 1 and this happened only 4 months and 1600 miles after I bought it. PIWIS read out confirms that the car was never abused (only range 1s, no range 2,3,4 and 5). I'm on the fence as to what I want to do with it. Can't wait to see how your build turns out :) Thanks for sharing.
@BoostBrothersGarage6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin. Sorry to hear about your car. What options are you weighing?
@keomo6 жыл бұрын
Dudes... that's like the killer question. I'm sure you've been through all of the options yourselves... going from selling it as a roller, swapping for the same engine, rebuild, oversize, 911 swap, turbo, etc... Man, can't be more on the fence right now. I have no clue!! But I will keep you posted! I feel you both on the situation with the 987.1. Also, I have a 996TT which is stock, so modding the 987.1 is pretty tempting!
@BoostBrothersGarage6 жыл бұрын
Hell yeah, with the 996 in the garage you should go all out on the 987! What do you want to do with the car? I rode in an LS swapped Boxter and it was a blast. Really weird to feel one of these cars with that much torque. It was stupid fast. Vision can build you a bulletproof 3.8, but without a turbo you won’t see more than 350 whp if I had to guess. The turbo build is going to be a lot of fun. There are some major issues we will need to work through, but that’s what will make it so awesome in the end. Lastly, for the lowest invest, you can find used 987 base engines for a somewhat reasonable amount. We also considered just buying a salvage 987.2 and swapping the guts and parting the rest out. Not to confuse you any more haha.
@keomo6 жыл бұрын
I've never had a track car, so that could be an itch I could scratch with the 987. Going that route would have me focus on engine durability/reliability, suspension, brakes, LSD and stripped interior. But I am also attracted in building something like a mini Singer/Ruf car which would rather focus on a bump in performance, LSD, nice sounding exhaust, wheels, aftermarket GT style wing, half roll cage, clear engine cover and classy interior. So many choices!!
@BoostBrothersGarage6 жыл бұрын
Both sound like great options! For a track car, I would consider tracking down a 987.2 engine. For the latter, I would go with a Vision built 3.8L and a turbo!

Hi guys - great channel and loved the Cayman mods before it went pop - I was following you almost mod for mod. (IPD/GT3TB - Cat less Headers etc,) Currently working on my own rebuild that I picked up - 997 3.8 C2 with a destroyed engine, so I’m keen to hear some of your decisions regarding crank case/ cylinders./ pistons and the crank itself... What did Vision do to improve the crankshaft - was it the GT/Cup Motorsport chamfered oil holes? Or did they do more - love to know. When you say the bores are sleeved what did you go for? Nikasil or Ductile Iron? Which is better for the turbo application? Also, did you close the deck with the sleeving for added cylinder support? I guess you will run the lower temp thermostat, any thoughts about Evans Power Cool 180 coolants? On Pistons - are the JE pistons coated on the sides / top? Are you doing any gasflow polishing and porting to the heads at all? Any thought on valve spring choices? Do you need any frequency dampers on the crank side when running a solid flywheel - I’m told the solid flywheel could damage the crank if the setup isn’t perfect.

@lesmurray20006 жыл бұрын
You've got a big challenge ahead. You're fitting a 5-chain engine into a 3-chain car. DME tuning will be interesting. Glad to see you moving ahead with this. My 3.8 is doing well and trying to save up for the next round of mods. For an intake - look for a 996 X-51 manifold. Seems to be the best fitting option. Your plastic 987 manifold won't work. Also, you'll probably want to use your Cayman injectors. I had to upgrade mine to get enough fuel. I was leaning out at 4500 RPMs.
@BoostBrothersGarage6 жыл бұрын
We will be running full stand alone engine management to get around these issues. Glad to hear it's doing well! What mods are next? Good call on the X51 intake, that should save us a ton of time and energy!
@lesmurray20006 жыл бұрын
Several things planned - Numeric Shifter cables are next, thinking about the Numeric shifter as well $$$. Then will upgrade the intake system - IPD Competition Plenum, GT3 Throttle Body, X51 intake. I already bought an EVOMS intake filter. I also have a GT3-style rear bumper to put on and want to get a matching front bumper as well. My jindie wants me to swap headlights to 997 style, but big bucks for bi-xenons.

Kudos to you all for putting in a lot of amazing content out there. Will be very educational. You made me think now if I have to really go ahead with my idea on buying the 2008 Cayman S. Thoughts?
@BoostBrothersGarage6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! What are your plans with the car (street, track, both)? If you don’t mind me asking, what is your budget?
@Praveen_ps_Kumar6 жыл бұрын
Boost Brothers Garage absolutely. Budget would be 25k. It would be a fun weekend project car. I would be looking to also use it in the track maybe 5 times a year to the max.
@BoostBrothersGarage6 жыл бұрын
25k will limit you to a 987.1. Now, there are horror stories all over the internet, and we obviously had issues... BUT, there are a ton of people tracking these cars with no issues, we see them all the time in our local PCA. Also, Porsche just came out with a program that is offering the M96/M97 crate engines for MUCH cheaper than the aftermarket has offered in the past. It really is a great car, and I’d hate to see someone stay away because of what MIGHT happen. If it was me, I would shop around and find one for 22-23 and use the extra room in your budget to do a deep sump / baffled pan. With that, good oil, and keeping it off the rev limiter (I.E. not bouncing it off the limiter doing donuts like us) and you should be fine!

Whatever happened to your 951 build?
@BoostBrothersGarage6 жыл бұрын
The 951 itself is going to the scrapper. But, the widebody car that is getting the 951 drivetrain is still going. It got pushed to the back burner while we were getting the GTI and 944 ready for track season, but I am getting ready to jump back on it.
@DirtDude1176 жыл бұрын
Makes me wish I didn't get a 987.1 the more I see videos about built engines. Really waiting on someone to figure out the wiring harness for the LS swap. I have a LS3 from a 2010 Camaro ready to go & my 987 has a Boxter S engine so it does not have a coolant level sensor or Exhaust Valve Solinoids (P0084 & P0078). Mine's still drivable but it's annoying having these codes come on. If you guys decide you want a different chassis let me know!
@BoostBrothersGarage6 жыл бұрын
The LS swap has its own inherent issues as well. Make sure you research it. With that being said, when we were considering the LS, we were just going to go stand-alone engine management. It just makes more sense with a build like that.
@mikedodd92945 жыл бұрын
Swap in a Tesla motor, its tiny, no transmission, scrap the emissions, exhaust, cooling. Once done with batteries it will weigh the same but have LS3 smoking torque
