I had detonation problems with my 300 ford with the same draw through set up if your taking the head off polish the tops of the piston and the combustion chamber that will help to reflect the heat. Rough castings create hot spots and that causes pinging because of the small casting bumps that start to glow under high cylinder pressures.
@alan68323 жыл бұрын
How on earth does he get detonation with 60 psi compression???? I can see detonation being the limiting factor when he goes to increase boost and maybe even with 4psi boost, but not with such low compression. How about responding with water injection? If you inject the water before the turbo, the turbo should atomize it pretty good and you may stop needing it once it cleans out the carbon.

You will have to test to get the right combination nozzles and if the weather changes or you go to a different elevation your set up will change the same way a carburetor is effected..expecting the venturi effect to suck the mix in is much more riskier and complicated than just changing to E85 safe hoses and getting a E85 rebuild kit for the Q jet and putting E85 in the tank..oh yeah don't forget you have to acquire pure methanol and distilled water and keep a mix handy to keep that tank full..

In 1972 I bought the turbo, 1 barrel side draft carb that had methanol injection built in and all associated parts from an Oldsmobile rocket. I paid $25 for everything And a set of manifolds for a slant 6 from a junk yard. After about two weeks of work i had it installed on my 65 Belvedere 1. I had to re-jet the carb, and since the turbo was sized for a 315 cubic inch engine and my slant 6 only displaced 227 cubic inches there was a bit of lag before the boost came up. I installed a spacer under the spring for the exhaust bypass that regulated the boost to set the boost at 12 lbs. My car went from a 21.5 seconds 67 mph quarter mile to a 10.34 second 137 mph quarter mile. TALK ABOUT A SLEEPER! I could toast new 327 4 speed camaros, 427 impalas and my friends Oldsmobile 442. Worst day I had was coming home with my new bride and getting hit broadside by a 70 year old man who ran a stop sign, totaled the car and left me with a broken wrist and no wheels. I CAN GUARANTEE YOU that the slant 6 will produce a LOT of horsepower. I ran the numbers, my engine was producing around 500 horsepower with absolutely nothing done to the engine except bolting the turbo onto an engine with 98,000 miles on it!
@christophertehan53644 жыл бұрын
I can’t believe it even ran with such low compression. Well done
@ScottKenny19784 жыл бұрын
From the top: the turbo is from an engine 33% bigger than the engine it's on. This means that you're not going to get your boost as fast as you need it for the slant. I would seriously look for the turbo off a stock 2.5L WRX (should be dirt cheap, with everyone wanting a bigger turbo). That will be spun up to max boost about 2000rpm on the slant. But that's for later. First is to fix that lack of compression! 6:1 compression should give you almost 90psi cranking. Once you get the compression issue fixed and the turbo actually working at all, I agree with the guys recommending water/methanol injection to control intake manifold temperature. I'd wire it like Nitrous, turns on at WOT, and have it spray in at the bottom of the carb. If you're still not getting the boost soon enough to run well, then look at a smaller turbo. Like I said up top, I'd go with the stock turbo of a Subaru 2.5L WRX.
@AG-wi5bn4 жыл бұрын
I also had problems with broken ring lands on my 300 ford when I was learning to tune the hard way. A good piston with a dish will help keep the flame centralized over the piston. I also like to run more clearance on the second ring for example I ran .034 on my top and .037 on the second because in the event you have an overly rich condition and the fuel puddles around the rings it allows more of a chance for the gas to escape as blow by instead of popping the ring lands by fluttering the rings.

@ScottKenny19784 жыл бұрын
Since this turbo came off a 301, it's a bit big for the 225 /6. About a third too big, in fact. So I expect that this turbo won't really start making boost till 3000-3500rpm, and that's a bit high for the slant. I would want a turbo where all the boost is in by 2500rpm.

Oof, I'm really worried that putting it back together like this is going to end up with another blown engine, though lacking spreadbore for the mopar intake would mean any blow-through setup would have to use a new carb- and like you said, why spend the dosh? I say, rebuild the bottom end and look for ways to cool the fuel and air mix by tuning for E85 if possible, and try to throw on some supporting bits (maybe stronger pistons since the bottom end has to come out?) to hold it together though that's remains to be seen until we can see the pistons. Don't expect much more than 5lbs of boost tony, even EFI stuff with hot intake/no intercooler like this could at best go 8lbs before requiring methanol injection (another idea). Also get an AFM for tuning and a temp probe to track intake temps. 1:10 Everyone used the quadrajet, actually. Dodge had em' on 360s and Ford had them on the 427 from like 70-72. They were still used up until 89', seriously good carbs.

I'm early and can't think of anything clever to comment, but in excited to see how this goes. I think itd be interesting to (junkyard/budget) turbo one of your cars. I know you're all about budget performance.

I wanna see the daily driver... Specifically, what's its MPG and quarter mile times, how quiet is it...

Maybe the reason people say slant 6s just don't quit is because they're the first engine i've ever heard of that will actually start with ALL cylinders way under 100psi compression. Supposedly...

Seeing as you're not going down the intercooler or FI route, are there any Uncle Tony-esque things that can be done to help with getting the turbo temperature down and prevent fuel igniting in there? Maybe an oil cooler pre-turbo to suck as much heat as possible out of the vanes.

Gas engines with Turbos don't neccesarily need high compression. Your only trying to get her 2100rpm then the intake heater will take care of air and considerable heat you gotta get her the fuel at 2100. Another tging to consider is N02 will cool the charge. Dont gotta do a 150 shot just a touch at full throttle will bring up the MAD by lower intake temps. If it were me I would leave compression alone...unless you think the ring gaps are not staggered or something else detrimental. 60# will get her down the 1/8 or 1/4 mile. High compression and boost is a strange and dangerous place with gasoline. Wish I was closer Id love to see ya plumb a GTP38 in there.Just so happens I got a complete needs a rebuild.

Front hight adjustment is set by measuring the difference between the steering knuckle and the adjuster pivot. If you are looking for factory spec.
@americanrambler49724 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is the official way, but using the rocker panel’s is quicker and easier and is accurate enough for most cases. Darn near as accurate to use as a the fixed pivot point.
@mattsondergeld55764 жыл бұрын
@@americanrambler4972 not really but you can do it any way you like. Mopars sit nose down stock. Relation of rocker front to rear is irrelevant. The measurement has a small tolerance.

There was a local old timer that would build straight 6s and really make em run. He said slants were good engines but could not take much mods for hp and hold together.

Is the qjet one that came on the turbo setup? Itd need boost refernced power piston or jetted rich to compencate. Probably want about 11.1 af raito under power, can also put the fuel side of a nos fogger nozzel signiled by hpo switch in the manifold. Keep it rich.. i always take the bronze filter out of qjets to. Full advace probley start at 20 for 10 pounds boost might need more after. Cool vid, cant wait to see it really rip
