Unfortunately this will be difficult to answer, but time permitting, you've given me an idea for a future video. :) While I'd have to imagine that two sticks will use more power than a single one, I don't have an easy way to accurately measure the power draw of RAM. However, if your performance is currently fine and you're not hitting that 16GB upper limit, then you should be fine; otherwise if exceeding the RAM, your pagefile.sys on your SSD will come into use and in that case it'd draw slightly more power (though based on a quick search, it seems m.2 NVME power consumption (.08W) is quite negligible vs. RAM which Crucial mentioned is to assume 3W per 8GB stick for DDR3/DDR4 - assume slightly less than that for DDR5)

While I haven't used the apps mentioned, based on my research, I don't think it's worth it. As long as the recommended RAM is met (which ranges from 8-16 for these apps) 3D Modeling is more CPU intensive/dependent for best performance. If you're not experiening any performance issues today, I really doubt you'll see much difference between 48 vs 32 total. Also staying at 32 (2x16) will ensure that you are always capable of utilizing quad channel.

@TekyTimbo Жыл бұрын
DDR5's architechture is different and better in almost every way than DDR4 on multiple points (natively dual channel, lower voltage, higher bandwidth, etc.) thus using just the RL won't really give you a good indication of performance between the two. Here's an excellent article from last year that also features test results: www.eurogamer.net/digitalfoundry-ddr5-vs-ddr4-ram-memory-z690-12900k Their conclusion at the time is copied below but I suspect if they revisited this at current prices, they'd likely give DDR5 the edge. Conclusion excerpt: "In the here and now, DDR5 remains a fascinating technology, even if it's not one that we recommend to value-oriented consumers. With AMD set to add DDR5 to their AM5 socket motherboards later this year, there's still plenty to investigate and we look forward to revisiting this topic down the road."

The information you have given is great. I have an important question; ga402rj model 8+8 version CPU: 6800HS. I want to make 8+32, is there a CPU difference here? When I look at CPU-Z, it says 8x32bit.
@TekyTimbo Жыл бұрын
The 8 x 32-bit you see is supposed to indicate the total number of channels but I feel that it's been a bit flaky at least for AMD. Older versions of CPU-Z simply indicated single/dual but the dev recently changed they way it's reporting # of channels but doesn't seem to be reporting it correctly (or at least that's easily understood). In my video (@6:45), you can see that it reported 4 x 32-bit but that was with an older version (2.04.0). I just downloaded the latest version (2.06.1) and it's also showing 8 x 32-bit which doesn't make sense to me. I would try the latest non-Beta version of HWINFO64 (7.60) as it now correctly shows my GA402RJ as having Quad-Channel for memory (in my vid [@6:33] using v7.40 it showed Dual-Channel).

I don't use the laptop for gaming so unfortuantely am unable to weigh in on that aspect but based on a couple of threads it seems that 40GB total (via 8GB onboard + 32GB expansion) has negatively impacted gaming performance, see these two threads on Reddit: 1) www.reddit.com/r/ZephyrusG14/comments/1172vs1/g14_6700s_recent_decrease_in_performance_in_games/ 2) www.reddit.com/r/ZephyrusG14/comments/12prvjp/24gb_vs_40gb_ram_upgrade_2022_model/ Caveat is that there can be other factors influencing the performance that the users may not have accounted for. @TekyTimbo11 ай бұрын
Without the use of any overriding software, RAM with different speeds will run at the speed of the slowest module so the CL38 will run at CL40. However, even if it were able to run at CL38, the timing difference is so small (15.8ns vs 16.7ns). What makes a far greater difference is Dual vs Quad channels utilization.

It really depends on your NLE and while I know many recommend 32, unless you're working with really large files or are doing heavy multi-tasking, I think 24GB is more than sufficient. Hey. I have the R9+6800S and recently the MoB was changed by warranty and they sent it back with 16GB soldered and 8GB added (originally it was 8+8 but they couldn't find one with the same configuration). If I apply logic from you video the 16GB soldered will work quad and the 8GB dual?
@TekyTimbo11 ай бұрын
First off, that was a nice mobo swap, congrats! Now as to your q, individual DDR5 sticks are dual-channel by default (vs. single for DDR4). Now let’s draw an analogy and think of each RAM stick as a highway (hwy) with 2 lanes each. Then think of GB as representing the length of the hwy instead of capacity (I'll use miles but feel free to replace with kilometers). So you basically have 2 hwys with 4 lanes except that one is 16 miles long (which we’ll call Hwy 16) and the other 8 miles long (called Hwy 8). Let’s pretend that these hwys run parallel with each other and that they start at the same origin and are being filled with cars at the same rate. Basically you have 4 lanes for the first 8 miles but when the cars reach the end of Hwy 8, they’ll be diverted to Hwy 16 with 8 miles left to go but all cars now only have 2 lanes. Coming back to RAM sticks, the first 8GB of the soldered RAM will be “paired” with the 8GB stick to create 16GB of quad channels, the remainder 8GB of your soldered RAM will run in Dual channel as it’s not paired with anything. Now, this isn’t a perfect analogy because unlike Hwys, RAM (the “R” stands for Random) doesn’t fill up sequentially. The point is that the more RAM you have “paired” will create more opportunities for it to be used in quad channel and thus increase performance. So now when you upgrade that 8GB stick to 16GB, all 32GB will be able to run in quad. This is why for soldered RAM, it’s always desirable to have a higher amount since you can’t replace it.

@TekyTimbo Жыл бұрын
You should determine how much RAM you really need: 1) Run all the apps/web browser tabs you normally need on a daily basis 2) Launch Task Manger > Performance > Memory tab and see what your memory usage is (AFAIK, all GA402s came with 4800 speed, but you can also check that here) It's likey that 16GB should be sufficient for regular usage and even 24GB should be fine for vast majority of regular users. Power users may beneift from higher RAM (8+32) but then will likely take a performance hit for reduction of quad-channel RAM utilization.

@TekyTimbo Жыл бұрын
So the 8GB OB and 8GB of the 24GB stick will run in Quad, the rest of the 16GB of the 24GB stick will run in Dual. In this config, there's a 50/50 split of chances the system will run with Quad or Dual channel. Now, let's say if you went with 8GB OB and 8GB stick, the system will have a 100% of running in Quad all the time thus it usually will yield better performance as long as what you're runing doesn't demand more than 16GB of RAM. Hope that helps.
@ivaylo8959 Жыл бұрын
You say chance of running quad channel is 50%, how can I check how the system handles the total ram, after I install the stick ? I still can`t decide if I want 24 or 32gb in total. The 24gb stick is 5600mhz cl46 only, there is no 4800mhz cl40 24gb module available *I saw that its not a problem installing different mhz/timming stick, because the onboard one will make the new stick work at 4800mhz cl40*. But I mostly use the g14 for games and probably the 32GB ram in total will be better in terms of future proofing, having more % in free memory and for the purpose I use the device. Now I use approx. 89% of 16GB, if I go with 16GB stick (Total24GB), it will drop to 58% which is ok, and for the 24GB stick (Total 32GB) used will be 43%. If I decide one day to do some ram intense task I think the 32GB total will be best to go with. @@TekyTimbo
@TekyTimbo Жыл бұрын
Unfortuantely you can't check how the system will utilize RAM (the R does stand for Random after all) and I'm not aware of how to you can force a PC to always use quad-channel first. In my testing, the 40GB total consistenly scored worse on the synthetic benchmarks, YMMV. However, if your memory requirements demand more RAM then having more will still be better than hitting the pagefile which is slower.

@TekyTimbo Жыл бұрын
LiIon batteries charge using CCCV method; there are many factors that will impact the charging rate with the state of charge being chief amongst other factors. You should normally see a higher charge rate the more the battery is discharged and much lower rates once it's almost fully charged. Depending on what you're using to measure the charge rate, it may not be accounting for the total draw from the charger. Case in point, using a physical watt meter, I measure about 6-20W when the laptop is almost fully charged but can be as high as 150W while under heavy load (during this time, the Battery Bar software only shows about 70W charge rate). The 240W charger will ensure it is able to both charge the battery and meet the additional power demands of your laptop under extreme loads.
