Great Review! Thank you for making it so quickly, so potential buyers and pre-order holders, like myself, can learn about it, before actually getting it. Now I'm even more excited to get mine. I was skeptic about the pre breaking capability of the auger, but from you review it seems like it's actually working :). I guess it's more useful in lower RPM settings. Question - My thought process was to order it with the espresso burrs and buy SSP MP for filter and for a (completely) different espresso profile than the DLC stock burrs. You seemed to really like the filter produced by the DLC brew burrs. How does it compared to the SSP MP in your opinion? The downside is that it cannot do espresso like the SSP MP, but I now think changing my order to include both burrs and save some money and not going with the much more expensive SSP burrs.

I received mine yesterday, and today I was playing a bit with the settings, trying to dial up the same type of grinding I normally use with my manual grinder, but it's proving challenging :p But hey, thanks to you, I learned how to set the absolute zero! So thanks for that! Btw, do you still have yours and use it? I ask because today, I removed the burrs to see how it looked inside and clean a bit (after testing the whole morning), and when I screwed everything back together, I realised the grinding marker is slightly off center... around 3 degrees clockwise. Not sure if I am doing anything wrong.... but I doubt it, cos there isn't much there to allow doing things wrong.

Some people have commented that the wave-springs may have caused poor alignment, because the waves are a bit too large on the DF83 they should have many smaller waves ideally. Not sure if I noticed that with mine, but someone was saying alignment would change for his if he rotated the wave spring in a different orientation! I have no clue what MY wave spring placement was like initially! I never did alignment on mine but my Gen1 DF83 v1 seems to be performing well for me!
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron 6 ай бұрын
I never experienced poor alignment as a result of the wave spring on either the DF64g2 or DF83g2. Unless something is wrong with the wave spring I don’t see how it couldn’t spread the load evenly. I worked in the automotive industry for a long time and a lot of automatic transmissions use wave springs to evenly apply pressure to the clutch packs. If it’s good enough for something more critical than coffee I think it’s probably fine! 😝

Several questions: 1)How do we figure out the zero point? The issue I'm having is the dial know is either too loose where it doesnt catch/turn the dial disk underneath, or its too tight for me to move. So I'm constantly having to find the zero point. 2) I have light roast beans and it jams ... i have to open it up clean it out, and that leads to the dial knob misaligning ... then i'm back to square one 😂.... what setting do you recommend for light roast beans? 3) should i start the machine first and then add beans? Or vice versa? Thanks

Unfortunately I don’t have a P64 to compare so I can’t give you an accurate answer on the comparison of volume while grinding. It hasn’t stalled on me yet but that’s not to say it absolutely won’t. I’m sure there is a scenario where the right type of beans and grind setting at low rpm may cause it to bind and stall, time will tell for that 😆

Interesting comments on the springs. I had a df83v2 and ended up returning it after never getting consistent results and it turned out the wave spring was not quite right and I suspected that was the issue… i didn’t like the design of it so much that the first thing I looked for with this grinder was if it had the wave spring and when I saw it doesn’t I ordered it immediately lol😅
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron 6 ай бұрын
That’s interesting, I’ve never had any issue with the wave spring on either the DF83’s or DF64’s that have them. How did you determine that the springs was the culprit of the issue you were having? You didn’t state what the issue was.
@dude4christ00707
@dude4christ00707 6 ай бұрын
@@coffeenerdaaron returned it and when I was discussing it with Joe he told me. The 83 is larger so if anything is off on it via defect or like grinds getting under it then the alignment is screwed and it’s very apparent. The 64 is smaller and I suspect much less prone to the issue because less leverage. This is my theory anyway and why I don’t like the design. But yea apparently mine actually had a defect.

I purchase Gorilla Gear 64mm burrs for an older ODE. The motor is dying. I only do Pulse and Chemex pour over. What 64mm burr grinder do you recommend so I can use my Gorilla burrs or is the move to 83V a better option?
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron 2 ай бұрын
The DF64 V2 is 64mm and spins at the same RPM as the Ode but with a stinger motor. Plus the motor is strong enough for espresso grinding if you ever get into espresso. I had Gorilla Gear burrs in a DF64 for a while and liked it. In my experience those burrs are better suited for espresso but they do well for filter brewing too.

I have used the 64mm MP’s and felt like I had a hard time with most coffees getting the sweet spot. Maybe I didn’t spend enough time with them to get a better feel for them but it just felt like they had a smaller window to dial in with. That being said I have had some fantastic cups from the larger 98mm MP burrs on an EK, and I do know a lot of people love the MP’s as a whole. I’ve never compared them side by side so it’s hard to recall what they tasted like compared to these, especially since it was also different coffees. If I can get my hands on a set I will definitely be testing them side by side!

@@CoreProject05 I didn’t notice that the threads would be an issue when tightening the dial plate back on. @coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron 7 күн бұрын
@@scoobtoober2975 while burr size does factor in somewhat when it comes to performance and taste I would care more about quality and burr style/geometry. I would get the best quality grinder in your budget that has a good burr that works well for your primary brewing method. It really depends on how you typically brew and your flavor preferences. If you only do filter brewing and want flat burrs then something like the Gen 2 Ode is great and it would save you some money that you could then put into upgrading the burrs later after you’ve experienced the stock burrs to figure out what you like and don’t like. The Timemore 078 is one of my favorite grinders for filter brewing but if you do espresso also the 078S is an option, both under $1k. There are so many options for grinders and burrs, it’s hard to say without knowing your preferences but like I said I would care about the quality of the grinder and burrs before care about the burr size.
