Voting has ended in Turkey's closest election in recent history and it's looking as if there was a huge turnout. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Voters were faced with a stark choice - whether President Erodgan should continue to lead the country down the path of one man rule - or a shift back to parliamentary democracy under his opposition rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
According to the opinion polls the race has been too close to call.

Erdogan's charismatic leadership style and strong public speaking skills have played a role in his popularity. During Erdogan's early years as Prime Minister, Turkey experienced significant economic growth, with increased foreign investment, infrastructure development, and a rising middle class. Many people credited Erdogan. Primarily due to President Erdogan's unwavering commitment to prioritize seismic safety. Prior to his leadership, the country's buildings were equipped with a meager 2% earthquake resistance capability. And Erdogan has achieved an impressive 50% enhancement . we can acknowledge and appreciate the positive change that has occurred under his leadership. That why he has enjoyed significant popularity in the past for a variety of reasons. It's important to note that public opinion see this too in Turkey

How did you think the economic growth took place? You can’t magically become prosperous without an actual income. The reason why there was an illusion of economic growth was because there was a lot of hot money intake due to privatization of land and state owned enterprises. He did it to both attract foreign investors and to give the illusion of a prosperous economic growth to masses that don’t understand anything about the economy. Now that there is nothing left to sell in Turkey the inflation rate went up to 300%. A wise leader would have improved upon the infrastructure and enterprises not sell them out to investors. Turkish people are ultimately paying for their stupidity and ignorance now.

Yes, the fact that he is in charge of a country where just 50,000 people died in an earthquake because of corrupt builders has obviously nothing to do with it. The government did barely anything to help the survivors, often having to live for weeks on end in makeshift tents. If Erdogan had any self respect he would have quit right there and then. It time this criminal and mass murderer leaves. Or is that some conspiracy of " the West" as well?

He is authoritarian though. The reason he is being voted from the majority, has to do with its mentality which has nothing to do with how people in western countries think.

I wish interviewers were a little more flexible in their attitudes. When someone on the spot says that people in Turkey have confidence in their electoral system, then that is surely something to examine dispassionately. It's almost rude then to go back to Erdogan's 'clinging on to power'. I'm not saying he won't, but I've got an open mind on the question, unlike the UK media, apparently. Something deeply wrong with editorial policy everywhere in the legacy media these days.

Yeah, that Peterson interview wasn't quite the gotcha you think. Peterson flat out denied there was a gender pay gap early in the interview. When Newman presented him with the stats proving there was one, he bold-faced lied, claimed he'd never denied it, only said it didn't mean what she thought it meant. He added arrogantly, '...because I'm very very very careful with my words.' The whole interview is full of laughable BS like this. Newman didn't handle it well, but she wasn't proved wrong, only caught off guard by a gish gallop of aggressive nonsense.

@Greywolf757 that's where you are wrong. Turkey is such a huge country with hundreds of thousands of small villages and towns, and in rural turkey, islam has been revived after years of kamalist military oppression. Even in major cities like Istanbul and in anatolia, the youth have embraced islam, and i have seen these with my own two eyes. Its very fanciful to think that AKP will lose an election in turkey. Finally, the west's hope to undermine turkey and islam used to lay with the military and its ability to overthrow democratically elected govts, but even here, the old guard have been purged and young guys promoted to senior ranks in the army. So forget these fanciful articles being written down the pub.

Erdogan broke the rules of his term which were originally like the United States, a maximum time of 8 years as president. He somehow manipulated the government and army and had become a dictator. Turkey used to be a very modern country but Erdogan ruined the economy and country as a whole.
