Dear Dr Saab , Greetings from Mumbai .As always the vlog was very well prepared and presented , covering the Muslim world in the past and present , and Indian history particularly in Southern India Few personal observations on the vlog: 1. Empires succeeded who were wealthy , same rules applies even now for nations. In earlier centuries, wealth was acquired by conquering new territories, collecting taxes as main source of revenue. Turkey also benefitted by this simple principle , of-course they also had leadesr like Kemal Attaruk in 20th century to modernise Turkey. 2. Mughals under Akbar , Aurangzeb were wealthy empires primarily on same idea of collecting high taxes on trades, agriculture etc. Unfortunately Mughals stopped developing technologies for agriculture, trade, maritime, metallurgy, warfare etc . While Europe continued to develop, invent new technologies , science , maths etc ..making them powerful in 18th, 19th and 20th century. even today western world, China etc are developing economically wielding enormous power - politically, strategically. 3. India’s History is much older than Mughals . Indians traded with Romans, Far East( Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia etc ) since BCE period. Most of this trade was maritime trade , Roman artefacts are found on ancient ports of Southern India- states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala etc. South India’s ancient history dates back to 2500 BCE, almost matching with Indus Valley Civilisation (or Mohenjo daro) . Based on the genetic findings of bones found from IVC period, DNA is found to be matching with South Indians. Later South India’s golden period or Sanganm Period started from 1200 CE to 400 BCE ..which saw great Empires : a. Pandyas 400 BCE to 300 CE b.Cholas right upto 1014 CE c. Cheras upto 12th CE 4. What are lessons for India and Pakistan, and whole of South Asia? Until and unless we dont develop economically ( increase per capita income by minimum 5x to 10x in next 15-20 years ) , we are doomed. No one will take us seriously in long run. Hope sanity prevails on both sides, so that we resume Trade , talks etc …have normal relations. If we cant learn from History, there is no use reading and analysing the Histories of other regions. Regards Sanjay

In whole Mughal empire only AKBAR was sensible one, he knew how to rule a HINDU LAND, he married a HINDU girl(JODHA) without converting her, all of his best ministers like BIRBAL were Hindu, and he build Hindu architects instead of destroying like all other Mughal rulers HIS PALACE HAD SMALL MANDIR where JODHA used to pray, and in another section, NAMAZ used to be offered EXAMPLE OF PEACEFUL CO-EXISTANCE but all other MUGHALS were barbarians for HINDUS, Today all the mandirs we are discovering were destroyed by AURANGZEB

Thank you sir from the US. The Ottoman economy relied heavily on cheap produce such as gain, commodities such as iron, leather, copper, etc. After the Spanish conquest in Latin America, the gold eventually made its' way to the bazaars of Turkey through the hands of Western European traders. The resulting inflation made it impossible for the local industries to retain their purchasing power and further slowed the lackluster novice industrial base. Turks did not really have a choice in WW1. The Russians, Brits, and French were eyeing Ottoman lands. Germany was the only strong power capable of aiding and the Ottomans could not afford to be without an ally. Seems like it was destiny.

ottomans never let institutions to develop when Europe was inventing technologies. actually we Pakistani have nothing to boast so we find solace and pride in others. we rascals talk more about others than to focus on ourselves.

Its true South American gold changed the strategic balance in Europe and Turkey started lagging behind . By the end of 19th century Turkey became a consumer market , it failed to capitalise on the industrial revolution . Turkey became Sick man of Europe

Good show. This topic needs lot more discussion, critical analysis and historical sense. Please keep it up. I think it may be useful to engage other scholars who may be invited to talk about specific topics such as religious and sociological aspects that influenced (restarted)the process of modernization in Muslim world. Many scholars (Muslim and non Muslim) have and are doing research on similar topics.

Turkey was briefly occupied by Allied nations. However, what happened in Turkey after the war of independance led by Mustafa Kemal was quite unprecedented. He abolish Caliphate, an institution that had been running for more than 1000 years. He converted Turkey into a secular state, made wine legal and the list goes on. He did something that Europeans would have done anyway. He saved Turks from being carved up like Psykes Picot Arab World. However, its Muslim dimension has been severly harmed.

Dr Moeed Pirzada - Outstanding analysis. It is very important that people in Pakistan and Muslim world look at the world through the lens of reality and truthful analysis. Unfortunately, we only look at the world from religious sentiment and emotions and miss the rationale dimension.
