I know what you mean I started making fans and rattles 15 years ago, there was no one to teach me ,as far as beading a fan I'm self taught, I was getting ready to gourd dance and git to watch a friend start beading a walking cane I made ,a minute later I had to go ,that's how I learned .

Thank you for this. My beloved parrot just died and I thought to make a wing fan to honor her, but didn't know where to even start. I have borax, as mentioned in your other replies, and now I know what I need. ❤️💔❤️ Missing her so much but glad I can preserve a bit of her.

Hi 👋 new viewer from 🇵🇭 Philippines, I'm Filipino and we already have many 🦃 turkey's here, it's my first time seeing that turkey feathers can also be used in many ways! We'll turkeys are hunted for their large thick feathers made into beautiful fans and headdresses used by the Native Americans. A turkey feather is strong enough to produce cooling air when fanned 😊

Thank you for this very high quality video - the lighting, filming and the eduation are great. Can I make a fan from hawk/owl wings? The shape is different - not as "long" as the turkey wing/elbow you have here. If Red tailed hawk and owl wings used traditionally.... Thanks so much!
@thewanderingbull98432 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Fans can be made with many types of feathers. Although many birds are protected and it is illegal to obtain their feathers under many circumstances. We do sell imitation painted red tailed hawk feathers that could be used. Here is a link so you can see them on our site wanderingbull.com/shop/craft-supplies/feathers/hand-painted-hawk-feathers/

Can you make a video about making a smudging fan with a clear quartz as the handle itself? I'm not sure how to attach the feathers like they are coming out of the end of the crystal. Advice would be amazing!

Def not telling you how to do your thing but a wing fan lasts a lot longer if you skin out those bones and rebuild that structure with cedar or another wood. Pacc that area with salt.. it will prevent decay. I glue that wooden structure into that cavity to replicate the support of the bones provided. From there I sew on a handle much like you demonstrate though I do sew the top through the wing itself instead of gluing it. Be careful on that step tho because if not done properly the feathers can shift slightly though it does provide a much tighter fit than glue will provide. Some tips...

Hi Jack! The sinew we carry doesn't have a brand name. It is made in the US.

what cleaning process did you do before you made the fan?
@thewanderingbull98433 жыл бұрын
Hello Thank you for watching, I use borax on the meat/bone area. After a few weeks of drying I dump off the borax and sew the leather on.
@tiredblood793 жыл бұрын
@@thewanderingbull9843 just straight up Borax? no mixture of water etc? or do you have a video on it?
@thewanderingbull98433 жыл бұрын
@@tiredblood79 we do not have a video on this. You would lay the wing on cardboard or in a box pour the borax on the joint, meat part and just let it dry the wing joint out for a week or so. This will pull the moisture out of the wing.
