I am obsessed with turkish ice cream! I love the chewy & quite resistant texture of it! The reason for why turkish ice cream in Turkey tastes a lot more original / fruity is because of the stricter food additives regulations in Turkey that basically restrict the use of some artificial additives that are allowed in most other countries, so that most of the time for example cherry flavored ice cream actually has a lot of real cherries in it instead of just cherry aroma!

Turkish style ice cream has orchid seeds in it, mastic is just one of those flavors like lemon or chocolate and it's also a flovor of pudings, turkish delight, turkish coffee etc. or just served in water with turkish coffee..:) and there's this specific turkish ice cream from Maras region that is made by basically pounding that orchid, milk and ice mixture gives this super sticky texture to the ice cream so that you can eat it with knife and fork.. (also the other popular thing with the orchid seeds is salep or sahlep, which is a hot milky orchid drink topped usually with cinnamon)
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
Hi cbrbb1, thanks for the information about the orchids! I believe mastic resin is also added to dondurma and contributes to the texture as well as the flavour. Thinking about everything we ate makes us want to jump on a plane to Turkey right now! Cheers, Sheena
@cbrbb15 жыл бұрын
well mastic definitely contributes to texture when it’s added because it’s like a natural gummy...but mastic ice cream is a kind of ice cream, you’ll usually find a plain ice cream which is sade dondurma and mastic ice cream which is sakizli dondurma - i with no dots:) - next to each other in almost every ice cream parlors, because they’re different 😉 loved you guys and your videos as well that’s why I wanted to contribute..

Dondurma oh stop it. The Guilts at buying a Gelato yesterday (well it was open) on a gorgeous Good Friday afternoon (social distancing of course) made it taste so much better. But that Cherry, lemon, and Chocolate combo l was there. Could taste it as if l was on the streets of Istanbul with you. 👍

Aren’t the mussels amazing. Such cool wee things. Would love to see them getting made. I answered your DM but for anyone reading this they cook the rice first and then pop it in the uncooked mussel before cooking the mussel. Very neat. Haha good one with the gelato. That dondurma was amazing. On our return visit to Istanbul we made sure to make the trip there for more. Lovely food. But that kebab and the muscles were crying for sauce!
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gemma C. Thanks for watching this one and we hope you liked it! The meat on the kebab was so perfectly marinated and spiced so didn't need any sauce. It was all about the meat and that was perfect. The muscles were very delicate in flavour so lemon was the perfect thing to go with them. 😋😋 Cheers, Thomas
