WHAT ARE TURKISH GERUNDS (VERBAL NOUNS)?

Gerunds are words that are made in verbs but used as nouns in a sentence. Unlike in English where gerunds are usually nouns that have an ‘-ing’ ending, in Turkish we have many more derivatives, we add different derivational suffixes to the verb root to make gerunds. The Turkish language uses gerunds as nouns, adjectives and adverbs in a sentence.
If you want to express the reason for a particular action, you can use Reason Expressing Gerunds.
These gerunds are used as ‘because’, ‘since’ and ‘in order to’ in English translation.
There are six reason expressing gerund types in this lecture:
‘-dığı için’ as ‘because’
‘-dığından’ as ‘because’
‘-acağı için’ as ‘because’
‘-mak üzere’ as ‘in order to’
‘-dığına göre’ as ‘since’
‘-acağına göre’ as ‘since’

Can you explain 'as far as' or so far as' in turkish ?.

For "as far as" there are various ways we can make such a structure. Below is one way you can make such a sentence: 1) In the first one, we need to use the "kadarıyla" word with the Relative Clause suffix "-dığı". This is a difficult structure suitable for upper levels. Here are some example sentences: Anla+dığı+m kadarıyla = As far as I understand Gör+düğü+m kadarıyla = As far as I see 2) There are different ways to make an "as far as" sentence, but making such sentences will only make "literal" as far as sentences when translated into English. The above example is the closest grammatical structure. The "so far as" structure is a bit more complicated because there is no direct translation from English to Turkish, there are so many variations. 1) You could say something like "Benim bil+diği+m kadarıyla" meaning "so far as I know", which is the same as the above "as far as" structure. 2) "So far as Ahmet is concerned" = "Ahmet'e gelince" which is "-e gel+ince" Dative + When Suffix (ince) after the verb. There could be certain verbal nouns that are not available in Turkish or a single verbal noun used for multiple uses like the one above. Hope this answers your question. ;)

@Good Vibes If you say 'Ahmet'e gelince' it means 'When we come towards Ahmet'. You don't include the dative case marker after the personal pronoun. It should be 'Ahmet gelince' meaning 'When Ahmet comes' ;)

@Good Vibes They are both used as 'when' but the 'dığında' structure can change and be used for different purposes. Example: The 'dığında' structure is 'Verb + DIK + Locative', but the 'DIK' (Past Tense) can be changed with '-ACAK' (Future). You can also change the Locative Case Marker with any other case. Basically 'dığında' is only one usage of that structure. The 'dığında' structure is the topic of 'Subject Participle'. I explain this topic on my Intermediate Turkish course (premium course), if you're interested.

You have missed to explain one more gerund "whether...or". Can you explain it.

Must have missed that one, sorry about that. If you want to make a sentence like "I don't know whether he is a doctor or not", you can say it like this: "Onun doktor olup olmadığını bilmiyorum". Here the important part is "verb + ıp verb + negation + dığı (relative suffix) + buffer n + Accusative Case". Here are some other examples: "I don't know whether Ahmet went to school or not" "Ahmet'in okula gid+ip git+me+diği+n+i bilmiyorum". Here is one with a different Tense and structure: "Jack wants to confirm whether or not there is gold in this mine." "Jack madende altın ol+up ol+ma+dığı+nı doğrulayacak". The main verb here is "doğrulamak" and only that verb can change its Tense. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them here ;)
