Turkiye and Iraq to Build $17 Billion Asia-Europe Corridor | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has signed an agreement with Iraq, Qatar and the UAE to build a $17 billion economic corridor between Asia and Europe. The proposed corridor will be made up of railways and highways, and will connect southern Iraq to Europe via Turkiye. The agreement was signed by Erdogan during his first visit to Iraq since 2011. At the G20 last year, India and Arab Gulf states had announced a similar corridor passing through Israel. With the war in Gaza delaying the India-Europe corridor, Erdogan is pushing for the Iraqi corridor as an alternative to the Suez Canal which has been the traditional trade route between Asia and Europe. Palki Sharma tells you what this project means for Iraq, Turkiye and the region.

The corridor is squarely aimed at nullifying IMEC but many prob stand out- 1) how will they ensure security particularly in Iraq especially in north where Kurds live, who don't like to take orders from Baghdad and section of whom hv bn at war with Turkey 2) will Qatar and UAE fund entirety of it since both hv diff geopolitical objectives and Turkey is facing dire financial crisis. this corridor could also bring peace. At the end of the day, it will depend on if the iranian regime orders it's terrorists groups to attack it but that would be a very risky move that could antagonize another bunch of countries letting the iranian regime very isolated

The Iraq corridor is more than just a road. Iraq is building the development road project which is meant not only is road and railway infrastructure, it includes industrial cities and new urban developments to already existing cities. This will help serve tens of millions of people and create hundreds of thousands of jobs. The Saudi corridor is a petty corridor pushed by the US to serve Israel. It goes largely through uninhabited desert and takes a long route. A true corridor would consist goring through Iraq and branches out from Mosul into Syria to the Mediterranean and Turkey via land to Europe.

Bypassing turkey will be better idea. Reasons 1. It is longer. Means more cost. 2. Iraq has no infrastructure. So, has to be from scratch. More time consuming. 3. Iraq is a war zone. It's simply unstable for trade and prosperity. India- middle east- Europe is best. Only one problem is gaza.

What about a USA proposal to connect India to Europe? .......... Yes India, Palki. Is it another pie-in-the-sky which USA draws to please India? USA went around the world making proposals and very seldom materialize. Has anyone heard any follow up to the BUILD BACK BETTER WORLD? Are the monies promised to Africa, to Latin Americas, to the Pacific Islands, to South-East ASIA and elsewhere still in the mails?

Firstpost , Good Report. However Turkey's capital Istanbul not only connects Europe with Asia but also Africa with Russia(thus 4 continents) . Do remember that this was the city " Constantinople" which once was Capital of Europe ( Joint Roman Empire under Constantine I ) . This was also the city that caused Napoleonic Europe to go to war with Tsarist Russia destroying their alliance to conquer the world !

There is already a road from India, Pakistan, Iran and Turkey into Europe and can be extended even down to South Korea. Ordogan almost always is the last card of American as it happened in Afghanistan but Taalibaan rejected the presence of NATO through Ordogan.

No. Turkey rejected it because they had the condition they'd only help the Americans if they stopped supporting ypg. Taliban is not stupid. Qatar, China and Turkey were their only hope of being quickly accepted as the legitimate govt by the US (something which still hasn't happened) hence why no nation recognises them yet

As an Indian, I don't see any problem with it! Since, when did we Indian start to see any projects like this as a competition, we are not like chinese. We shouldn't be insecure. As this project too will help us incase IMEC isn't successful because of the conflicts. I respect UAE too for participating! I don't understand this anchor's frustration, why does India has to be a part of everything for it to be considered good. If India isn't part of something doesn't mean it's a challenge to India. India will never be disppointed for a project that brings prosperity in a region & their people! Jai shree ram🚩
