Turn a Roman canteen on your wood lathe! This multi axis project could be an ornamental box, or a vase or actually used as a flask.

Not hollowed?
@MikePeaceWoodturning

Yes I hollowed it. I had to go back to my original footage just now and discovered that somehow that sequence did not get filmed. I must have forgotten to turn on the camera. I used a small swan neck tool for hollowing.

Hey Mike, Harold here. Nice video. I watched it several times, but not to learn what you did, but to see where you turned the tenant and then hollowed it out. I think you missed that clip when you were building the video. So, my assumption is you chucked it in the recess you make with the forsner bit and turned a tenant on the other side. Reverse chucked on the tenant and then hollowed it out like a bowl. Reverse chucked it on the side where the bowl now is. The video seems to be good after that. Don’t feel bad as a videographer I have done that. Editing, especially by oneself, is hard. Ask me how I know. Nice job on the flask, I really like that and am going to make one. Thanks

@@MikePeaceWoodturning I have a friend who assisted Beth at Arrowmont and he made a couple. Most of her stuff is a little to out there for me but I would do one of her instrument classes. You know I am faking the playing. My wife can play, my daughters can play and my grandkids can play. I cannot. That is about 20 takes to get my actions sync’d to their music. All my buds love it. We have a few cocktails and someone pulls that up. I always wanted to make a guitar but did not have the patients. I was watching a video by this group Gwinnett Woodworkers you might know them (LOL) with Jimmy Loudermilk. Now he can play. So I had to make one. It was fun. I gave it to my cousin because she fell in love with it. I have a second on in the works but I am slow. I’ll get there just have to get the other things that distract me like a Roman Flask (almost done with the prototype) Thanks for the kind words. Hope you wife is doing better. Have you tried Lumafusion for the ipad to edit videos? Its slick

Great idea for a larger canteen where I am going to chuck with a recess on each side. But for these small ones, it only has an insert on one side which takes less work than two.

Maybe for someone with experience but it would be difficult getting the bevel and angels right. If you try it, I think I would use about 150 - 220 grit. You really want an 8" slow speed grinder.

"Che Chen " An Interesting wood to choose to use with a canteen to hold liquid to drink from. The sap from the tree will kill you if not immediately removed and treated. (Hope it is just a decorative piece.) I would be interested to hear a comment about whether the dust is toxic or an irritant. Frequently discussed is the difficulty of turning cedar and other wood dust as potential irritants. Chechen tree Featured snippet from the web The Chechen Tree and the Chaca Tree are often found growing near each other and are most commonly found in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. The Chechen tree is poisonous and the Chaca tree has a nectar to neutralise the poison if you happen to have touched the Chechen tree.Apr 1, 2016 Reported just touching the sap of this tree has killed many people in South America. Maybe the wood is ok.

Interesting. I tend to lump all of the exotics together and be cautious. I know a fellow who cut some cocobolo pen blanks on the table saw and had a severe reaction. P.s. this is mike. I am using my wife's tablet during a hospital visit.

Mike, I’m a big fan of your presentations, and look forward to seeing each new one, and even re-watching the older ones ! However I have one complaint : it sounds like your microphone is mounted on your turning tool ! The turning sound Is excruciating, especially when wearing ear pods or headphones. Is it possible when editing to attenuate the volume while turning thus reducing the volume to a livable level. Don’t mute it fully, just back it down enough so as not to bust my ear drums. Other than that your presentations are super and greatly appreciated. Sam.
