Thanks Mike, I must make one of those shaving brushes, now that you've shown how easy they are to make.

I'm looking to start turning my own handles - like you I have been wet shaving for nearly 40 years so I just did my usual youtube search and there you were.... Thanks for the pointers on what to look for when getting the brush etc.. much more than just a 'how to turn' video'

Thanks for that.

Loved the video. I'm turning two razor kits for my grandsons for Christmas. Have you tried using french padding lacquer? I've used it on pens for years. The key to using it is spin the lathe >= 3600 rpm, and use many (4 or 5) coats of the lacquer. I use an old WHITE cotton t-shirt to apply the lacquer. I've found that colored cloth can bleed unwanted color into the project. Also, when applying the lacquer, heat is your friend. Let friction build heat to just below the painful point. This actually crystalizes the lacquer and causes it to build depth quicker.

I have shaved with a badger brush my dad gave me 40 years ago. I used it many times shaving out of my steel pot, back before the Army fielded Kevlar helmets. It is getting a bit thin. You have inspired me to turn a new handle and replace my old friend.

Shave Pucks or hard soaps will work? You can mix and match old soaps? to fit in any mug or cup that you like to use. do you use any hard soaps like Mitchell's Wool Fat? Cut the bar soap up, put in a mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, microwave for a minute or so? if it foams up, stop. is it? let cool you just went it to congeal' place in the sun, until soap hardens use dry brush more water i use Dove soaps there cheap and good wheelchair Larry Merry Christmas

Great video I’ve started traditional wet shaving back in or before my Army days. Good pointers, I’ve turned a few my self. Always good to see how others turn a handle. Keep videos coming.

Love it! I’ve made more shaving brushes than anything else, although most of them have been resin. I remember you getting a collet chuck in an earlier video. Well, I have that chuck and actually turn my brushes like a bottle stopper, on a stopper mandrel in the collet chuck. I drill and tap a second hole into the handle for the mandrel and it works great, just another way of doing it. And you’re right, if you’re not using a brush and a good cream or soap you don’t know what you’re missing! Thanks for the vid, this one really appealed to me. - Jay
@MikePeaceWoodturning6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. I think the bottle stopper mandrel is great if you are production turning brushes or happen to have one. My approach is for the one or two and the turner does not have the stopper mandrel.
@cigarsmoka97416 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, not everybody makes bottle stoppers. I’ve only made 2 so I repurposed the mandrel. I’m not a production turner at all but have made several brushes for myself and many more as gifts. There’s nothing like a shave with a proper lather!

Hi Mike, I’ve recently started wood turning and have been enjoying your KZbin videos a lot. I recall seeing a video where you discussed Bradford Pear turning but can’t find it. I’ve come into possession of a large Bradford limb that broke off a neighbors tree. It’s been down probably 8 or 9 months and has been cut to various lengths but it don’t see any large cracks yet. I’m trying to determine my best plan of action to be able to use it in the best manner. I’m not sure you discussed it in much depth but if you could point me to it and or give me some advice I’d really appreciate it. Thanks for any advice and please keep posting. My dad used to tell me about his friends who wrote on the bonnet of their car on their wedding day with a can of shaving foam. When they wiped the foam off, they found that it stripped the paint off the car!

Thanks Mike, but in this instance I don't think I will make one.... Because I wet shave with a Badger brush that I have had for over ten years and it is still as good as new. Don't need to replace :D
