Turn a Biscuit Cutter

I have a problem with the design from someone who has made lots of biscuits.... Many recipes have you roll the dough to an inch thick, so the depth needs to be bigger, id say a minimum of 1.5 inches so you dont squish your dough. A 1 inch depth is perfect for cookies tho. Just a tip for anyone who wants to make these themselves.

I learned a couple things Mike. I've never seen a wooden biscuit cutter and I've never heard the word treen. And I'm a lifelong southern boy. LOL When I was a boy, the ladies in the family either hand patted the biscuits or used a flour coated drinking glass. Then the metal cutters came to K-Mart(before Walmart even started up) That's a neat little project. Thanks for sharing it.

A very nice piece of wood. I'm glad you mentioned the air holes because I would not have thought of them. I just offered to make a couple for my wife, and she decided the cheap dollar store metal ones are good enough for her. What can I say, just no taste :( But I will make a couple anyway

At 16:08 while making the biscuit cutter, you use a gauge to set your caliper. That's an awesome idea. I drafted out a gauge set from 1/4 to 2 3/4" and 3D printed it. It's pretty much within 1/64 for all dimensions (filament dimension and some ABS shrinkage is responsible for this error source). If I decide I need higher precision, I can always calibrate the blocks with tape. I can make the STL file available if you are interested.

Interesting to hear you use the term, "treen". The is a store near San Diego called the "Tryyn Gallery", where a large variety of kitchen utensils are made and sold. There is no web site but a Google search will find photos and information about it. There is very little woodturning done there but the owner makes many interesting and beautiful things.

Mike, my granddaughter took over making biscuits from her grandmother who passed away several years ago and I think I"ll make a couple of these for her. Would you mind sharing the approx dimensions of the blank and also the finished project? I realize it is not critical, but I don't have even a rough I idea of where to go. Maybe 2 " diameter and 1 1/2" deep if it will be a surprise and then make the next one based of the feedback. Otherwise ask the cook. My wife makes canned biscuits, LOL!

Great little project Mike. However, I do have one question. According to everyone I have talk to about the Teknatool 50mm jaws, they are dovetailed on the inside as well as the outside. The inside is slightly less than the outside, but they are still dovetailed. You are not the first person I have heard say the jaws are straight on the inside by any means. And everyone I speak with has their own opinion about them. So I guess maybe I might have to ask Teknatool about them again.

I never said the jaws were straight on the inside. I said make the tenon parallel. This comes from the G3 manual. Other Teknatool documentation is similar on these jaws, "Make the spigot as parallel as possible to maximize the efficiency of the clamping action...The 50mm (2 Inces) standard jaw has a thin lip (or shoulder at the front face) whicH is designed to bite into the timber as the jaws are tightened. DO NOT CUT A RECESS AS THIS WILL REDUCE GRIPPING POWER." I always advocate reading, understanding and following a manufacturers instructions until I have enough experience and knowledge to know when to deviate. I never thought of your reply as argumentative. Sorry if the tone of my reply indicated otherwise. The confusion or misunderstanding you had on these jaws is common. I have seen a number of comments similar to yours where folks can't hold the wood with a Teknatool chuck and then blame the chuck because they did not carefully read the instructions. I saved my response so I can copy and paste when it comes up again. Safe turning my friend.
