Hi From Wellington New Zealand. Just been growing sweet potatoes for the last two years. Even in our temperate climate it can still be done. One thing I would say is that when you take the slips off the mother potato, if you dont cut it with clippers but just gently pull it out, you will have roots on the bottom and you will be able to plant out straight away!
@stanleygarland5164
@stanleygarland5164 11 күн бұрын
One advantage of clipping is that the roots stay on the potato and make more slips. It only takes about 3-4 days to get a few roots on the cutting if you dip it in rooting compound.

I love this. You're a great teacher. Gratitude, from a great granny, 82 years old, in big wide beautiful Montana. At 6,200 ft elevation, on the Continental Divide. Its so cold here at night that sweetbpotatoes have to be grown inside. I know. A gardener for 60 years. It was -45 degrees below zero here this winter. And it snowed all night last night. On March 24. And it will snow here until mid May off and on. And in the old days, every month of the year. Be happy and healthy from granny in Montana. Blessings sent your way. Happy gardening.

I would guestimate 17 slips would cost about $20-$25. Im growing sweet potatoes for the 2nd time this summer. Im growing the orange, Japanese, and Okinawan (purple) potatoes. I was able to keep the vines alive through the winter by planting them inside and sitting them in water. Then I planted them in my beds outside on March 3rd. They're doing very well.

Really informative video! I have another way to further increase multiplication of plants a lot. Your idea of several indoor house plantings like a hanging baskets with two or three sweet potatoes planted in each hanging basket and they will create ALOT of pretty looking vining foliage. You can cut long sections of the vines off say one to two weeks before planting time and cut each stem that sprouts from the main vine and each one will have a node and that is the node that will create roots when the vine lays on the ground in the rows. Once you create these cuttings you basically are creating slips. Gather them and put them in a jar and in one to two weeks you’ll have more slips to plant. I also saw a video where the farmer took one row of vines and cut sections of say 3 sweet potatoe stems all together and just planted them into the prepared row to increase planting big time. Basically one row can turn into many rows of propagated sweet potatoes.

You are so right. I planted sweetpotatos last year for the first time. They did really well. We had SP to eat all winter. I really enjoyed pulling them up . I bought my slips to start with this spring. I got them really cheap. Then I took some of my SP from last year and put them in water and some soil. Doing my own experiments. The soil method is so much better. Its 7-12-23, in NC . I'm getting ready to plant another batch of SP slips. This has become my addiction. Hope you have a great harvest .

I have actually kept those cuttings or slips in water over the whole winter period and they survived. Then i just plant them in spring. Instead of trying to store sweet potatoes and then first sprouting them and then take slips from them and then root them. I just take the slips and put them in water and then keep them in a spot where its not that cold and they survive through winter. Then i just plant them out immediately just before spring. Works like a bomb
