This vegan Philly cheesesteak sandwich features marinated portobello mushrooms that are thinly sliced and cooked with onions and bell peppers until tender and caramelized. The mushrooms soak up the savory marinade, resulting in a meaty and flavorful filling. The mushrooms, onions, and peppers are piled onto toasted sub rolls or hoagie buns, slathered with vegan mayonnaise, and topped with melted vegan cheese for a gooey and satisfying sandwich. With its rich umami taste, hearty texture, and cheesy indulgence, this plant-based twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak delivers a deliciously satisfying meal for vegans and non-vegans alike.

Ingredients:
For the "Steak":
4 large portobello mushrooms, stems removed and caps sliced into thin strips
1 onion, thinly sliced
1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
3 cloves of garlic, minced
3 tablespoons liquid aminos
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
For the Sandwich:
4 sub rolls or hoagie buns
Vegan cheese slices (such as vegan provolone or vegan mozzarella)
Vegan mayonnaise
Optional toppings: sliced pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.
Instructions:
In a large bowl, whisk together the liquid aminos, balsamic vinegar, minced garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Add the sliced portobello mushrooms to the bowl and toss them in the marinade until well coated. Allow them to marinate for at least 15 minutes to absorb the flavors.
Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the marinated mushrooms, onion slices, and bell pepper slices to the pan. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables have softened and the mushrooms are cooked through. Remove from heat.
While the vegetables are cooking, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Split the sub rolls or hoagie buns lengthwise and place them on a baking sheet. Toast the buns in the oven for about 5 minutes until slightly crispy.
Once the buns are toasted, remove them from the oven. Spread vegan mayonnaise on the inside of each bun.
Divide the cooked mushroom, onion, and bell pepper mixture evenly among the buns, spooning it into the rolls.
Top each sandwich with a few slices of vegan cheese. Return the sandwiches to the oven for another 5 minutes or until the cheese has melted.
Remove the sandwiches from the oven and assemble any additional toppings you desire, such as sliced pickles, lettuce, or tomatoes.
Serve the vegan Philly cheese steak sandwiches warm and enjoy!

Girl, I'm not sure if I could go back to being vegan cuz I love cheese too much lol I can't stand vegan cheese. Anyway vegan cheese makes my stomach hurt if I eat too much of it anyway.

I made this the other day, and when I say delicious, I mean delicious. I have never been one that cared for mushrooms because I didn’t like the texture in my mouth. This was so good. I didn’t add the vegan mayo, but I added lettuce and guacamole. Will definitely make this again.

I just tried your mushroom Philly Cheesesteak and it was absolutely delicious. I am truly enjoying your vegan recipes. I have always deliberately left out balsamic vinegar when making portabella mushrooms. However, I took a chance with this recipe based on how good several of your other recipes turned out. I was happy that I added the balsamic vinegar, delish!! You are appreciated. Thank you for sharing. I, too, will definitely be making this recipe again.

Great recipe Michelle. I made this two weeks ago. I crisped my mushrooms just a little bit more and I added the cheese when it was in the pan, I prefer my bread soft. Love the video, you so silly, Keep the great content coming sister!

This is my favorite way to eat Portobello mushrooms. I also make them by adding red bell pepper. Red onion, some asparagus. With Balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Salt pepper on French bread with Swiss cheese and mayonnaise. Yum. Thanks for making your shows, they always give me menu ideas. 😊❤

I've been doing this for about 11yrs. The only difference is that I do not marinate my mushrooms in anything. Buttons or Criminis sliced and sauteed in roasted garlic infused olive oil w/pepperoncino flakes or cayenne. Sweet red bell peppers, white onions, and Mezzetta sweet cherry peppers. Melted American cheese, serve on a brioche bun. Bingo! Instant winner.
