Such a beautiful song that brings tears to my eyes as I not longer recognize the church I grew up in. A pregnant woman, with a baby, was kicked out of recently kicked out of Mass in Dallas, Texas, during communion as she prayed without a mask on (and told a business has this choice). One of my church family members shared with me that the church may be segregated by those who have, or have not taken the vaccine (this has already happened in a Florida parish). I have not physically been to Mass since March 2020 for I cannot wear a mask the length of Mass. I pray to remain a true remnant and will turn to the Lord during these uncertain times and pray, for the sake of His Sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. . .Jesus, I trust in You. Thank you Fr. Mark, EWTN, for sharing with us that "God transcends the sacraments." Man is not the one we turn to. . .God is.

Your message makes me so sad. Mask have been proven not to work and they have a chemical in them that causes cancer. Our church doesn't require mask and i have never worn a mask to church ever. I will pray for that church that seems to have its priorates mixed up.

Bryd, I applaud your intentions here but question how this is supposed to display a love for god... endangering your brothers and sisters in Christ is not a show of faith but rather of ignorance and excuses. I agree that we must stand for what we believe in but are masks and vaccines really the hill you want to die on? In my opinion, this only weakens our faith and empowers the people who claim Christians are obsolete or stupid. God bless.

Crazy how when entering a church God/Jesus is present, literally their home. So why were people so scared of a virus in the lord house ?

I remember attending a concert with a church group when aged 21. Mike Stanley sang this song, so I hear his version. Slightly different rhythm and words from what I knew. I bought a cassette tape of the songs and haven't forgotten them to this day.

Once again, another SJ song (one of my top tens), and you are playing it as gently and prayerful as this was meant to be played. Funny, I knew the song from before all the "He"s and Man references were replaced (I am He/God that comforts you.... Like Man who dies/Like flesh that fades, etc)... Again, I took the opportunity to sing the harmonies and some of the bass note runs (accompaniments) in the song. Again, thank you. Not many choirs that I've been in lately (since the early 1990s through now) have been playing these older St Louis Jesuit classics, and it's nice to be doing so again, at least here, as well as comforting. Thanks.

Chris, I can always count on you to be note-perfect. I search the internet for recordings to send to my cantors and choir to help them learn the music. Yours are the recordings I usually send because they match the printed music exactly. Your vocal interpretation is extremely accurate, not to mention beautiful, as is your guitar accompaniment. Always a model performance. Thank you so much!

Melodious rendition! Seems like you have recorded it in a single live session. Guitar was played flawlessly as well. Lyrics are in sync with latest Hymn book "Choir Cantor". Thank you for uploading!

I generally am able to record things in one live session, as you say. I sometimes have to take a couple runs at it, usually I'm not happy with something I did on guitar for the intro, and then I start over. I really love this song

Hi Chris, great rendition. One of my fave songs. If not too much, would it be feasible to include the chords too? I want to learn how to play this.. Thank so much and God bless

The Holy Spirit was definitely upon the prophet Isaiah, when he wrote this very inspirational verse. What about a performance of the opening verses of Isaiah, chapter 6? The prophet Jeremiah must be good for at least a couple of inspirational hymns. What about a hymn of Jeremiah 20:7-9? Your singing and playing are a true gift from God. You make playing the guitar look so easy. Do you compose any of your own hymns?

This song is published by OCP (Oregon Catholic Press). There should be a link in the description of this video, as well as a link on the final screen at the end. If not, just go to OCP.org and you should be able to find it by searching for the title. Best wishes!!!

Well first of all that would take me a little while and at this time of year I just don't have that much extra time. Also, it'll only cost a couple bucks to get a copy directly from OCP, and I always feel like if I post chords for a song I'm taking money away from the guy who actually wrote it because then you won't go buy it. I don't know John Foley personally although I've met him a couple times, but a lot of the OCP guys I do know pretty well and I wouldn't want to do that to them. Sorry I'm not trying to be difficult...I hope that makes sense. Thanks so much for the comment! Peace

Chris, good morning. This is Donald Mayer. I love this song and so many other songs performed by John Foley and the other guys. On Christmas day in 1979, I received the album Earthen Vessels. It was an incredibly moving experience listening to that album the first time on vinyl. You said you met John Foley a couple of times. Do you know if he has an e mail address? I would love to let him know how much I've enjoyed his music the last 38 years. I really like hearing him sing The Cry Of The Poor. Also, this is a particularly hard day for me. You see, my wife passed away last December. It was on August 4, 1988 that Paula and I decided to get married. We were married 28 years. I cannot describe how much help my wife was to me over these years. I was born blind and my wife provided so much help to me in many many ways. By the way, my e mail address is baptistdon@ptd.net. That's baptistdon@ptd.net

The original lyrics as I know it without being convoluted with diversity and inclusiveness. Do not be afraid to use the word "man" or have the fear of death Refrain: Turn to me, O man and be saved, Says the Lord for I am God; There is no other, none beside me. I call your name. 1. I am He that comforts you; Who are you to be afraid of man who dies, is made like the grass of the fields, soon to wither. 2. Listen to me, my people; Give ear to me my nation: a law will go forth from me, and my justice for a light to the people. 3. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth down below. The heavens will vanish like smoke, and the earth will wear out like a garment.

I understand. I don’t change the words myself, I just recorded the song the way the sheet music currently appears, so that I’m singing the same thing that others would be looking at on their music. I’m not sure when the change was made, but you’re correct those were the original lyrics. I’M not making any kind of statement with the lyrics, just doing it the way it’s written now
@baliwski4 ай бұрын
Thank you for understanding, and appreciate your reply. I love this song, the way it is played on the guitar, and the gift of your voice. I am however sensitive on how the world seems to have changed for the worse. I fear that it even seems to seep into worship. I hope that by voicing it out, I do my part as a Catholic to uphold the tradition that I wish maintains the fabric that Christ has woven for us. With the confusion of the things going on in this world, I find solace with the words of this song. A sinner longing for salvation. May the holy spirit bless you and enlighten us all. Thank you for your music. I entrust you to decide the best way to bring everyone to prayer.

I sang this song during Catholic mass, with my "folk group", back in the 1970's, after it was first released. Chris does an excellent job and has a nice voice. However, there is nothing quite like the original. By changing the lyrics to be more gender neutral , the song loses it's meaning. No longer is God beckoning to us. It's no longer a personal God who is saying turn to ME. You have destroyed a wonderful song. Yet, this is practiced widely, starting with the Protestant churches and then spreading to the Catholic church.
