This is something I envisioned about 8 years ago when setting up a bunch of desktops in a computer lab. I thought, "One day the kids will just link their phones to this keyboard and monitor and we won't have to set up all these PCs up anymore."

Always love these sorts of videos. Honestly, I'd love to see these used in enterprise or government settings. Could cut down on so much e-waste. Employees get issued their work phone and laptop dock like this. Nothing more is necessary for probably >%90 of the workforce. Or places in Africa where many skipped over desktops/laptops and went straight to smart phones. Docks like this could be a cheap way make a phone 10x more productive.

Just to add on to this; if you're going the affordable used older flagship route and can't swing a used Galaxy S-whatever, LGs with Android 10 and up had a bespoke desktop mode called Screen+. (Technically the Screen+ name arrived with Android 11, but it's just a sporty name for the desktop mode they launched with A10.)

I got one for $229 and I love it. I sometimes plug in my Switch but I mostly use it with my Galaxy phone with Dex. I am surprised how fast it is. Everything runs so well and the cool thing is when I upgrade my phone, I also upgrade my laptop. And I don't ever have to use my phone as a hotspot or try and connect it to wifi when I'm out and about. My phone is 5g so my laptop is always 5g - Awesome!

This product category is so cool! I just wish for some key improvements such as: - 45W power delivery over USB-C. Both on battery and passthrough. - 15.6" or 17.3" screen with 120Hz / 144Hz refresh rate for gaming. - Configurable charge limit to extend the life of the internal battery. - Being able to turn off power delivery to the host device. This avoids constant charging it when not needed. - Slot for full-size SD cards that sits flush. - Perhaps a full size USB, Ethernet and/or HDMI out for extra convenience.

Besides of the slow wireless connection (which is understandable given the technology), my only other gripes are the lack of a place to put the phone on while being used, and the less than ideal placement of the ports on the side instead of the back for minimal cable overhang. This could get interesting *when google implements a desktop mode into their android ecosystem* so I could use it with my Pixel 7. And the price could be more like 200 - 220 bucks to be attractive to me. Otherwise I always liked the "Padfone" use case scenario! This does make the phone more important when traveling though (single point of failure) and removes the idea of a backup device. But it also brings more convenience by just having one set of data and finding the same apps as one my phone.

We absolutely want all the phone brands to make desktop mode like what Samsung (Samsung did with Dex but only for flagships), Motorola (they already did on some phones, I think), and Nubia (Console Mode on Red Magic phones) did. This is pretty great, but the 15w pass through does kneecap it for the steam deck. I guess you could use an external dock. I'm guessing those hinges let it go tent mode and play the role of simple secondary display to a laptop. Samsung or some other major brand not making laptop docks is the industry decision that makes the least sense to me.

Would be a bit messier, but this would be perfect for handhelds that have more than 1 USB C port. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra (maybe upwards of 500 USD) for a solution that had 100 watt pass thru, 120hz screen (without touch), decent speakers, low pro mechanical keyboard. Basically, one of those newer gaming chromebooks but without the motherboard. Add a DIsplayPort input for eGPU. Using one core computing device for multiple interaction experiences and performance tiers is what appeals to me greatly. Cloud syncing and what not is great, but *not* having to do that is better :P

As someone that likes niche tech for niche situations, and use my phone for everything. Like seriously, I use my phone as a computer replacement, I used it to hack my 3DS and Vita, I use it with my hard drives, I use it with my TV as a portable console (you can download a TV friendly launcher), I even have a Windows emulator so I can boot/run some x86 .exe apps. I even got the Lenovo Yoga 13 with the HDMI input so that I could have an Android tablet as a monitor for my PC. Like clearly I do niche things with Android. But I'm still trying to wrap my head who needs this. I get it that Android phones can have a "desktop" mode, but my issue is there are TV's & monitors everywhere. With a USB-C/HDMI/Dock cord, wouldn't you just use any screen you see, as your monitor? Like pretty sure with some smart shopping, $350+ tax, the cost you'd spend on this, you could a decent mid-range laptop that could do what dex could do but better (except for gaming), and probably get an app or dock that could mirror your phone anyway to said laptop for the Android desktop os anyway. Looks cool, but it's price for it's function has me scratching my head, because I'm never in a situation where there isn't a TV that I could just plug my phone into. Monitors at home, monitors at a friend's house, monitors at work, monitors at a hotel, just can't find a reason to bring a monitor like this to a place where there wasn't a monitor I couldn't plug my phone to

At the same price point of $350 you can get their new nexdock called XL. You get a bigger screen and 120 Hz screen, but once the pre orders are done... The price will go up for the Nexdock XL

I recently got one of those cheap portable monitors with 2K 120hz 16" that I use for steamdeck. Paired with bluetooth foldable keyboard and mouse, this is another option that might be more appealing for some.

At 349 its a bit too costly. Might as well get a full fledged laptop. And correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the RedMagic already support display passthrough to PC via USB? I wonder if there’s an application to support that for all devices.

What kind of laptop you can get for $350? I used to own several of them and I never touch them ever again. This lapdock is useful as a secondary portable monitor with integrated USB hub, keyboard, and mouse. As for the Red Magic, there is indeed a software to extend the phone to a Windows machine called the REDMAGIC Studio.

Nexdock is gettting better. One concern from me, how good is the screen in terms of screen brightness and color accuracy?

The problem with this wireless version is your phone battery will just drain, the wired version makes more sense because it also keeps your phone topped up
@farishanafiah8461
@farishanafiah8461 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm thinking of the same thing. Sure it does cut the cable, but going wireless means it depletes both the lapdock and the phone. That said, the NexDock Wireless still retains the wired input connectivity, so all is not lost.

I have the second Nexdock version. I noticed the trackpad was way too sensitive and was picking up movements way too often from my larger hands. Did you happen to notice this at all with the newer version? I mean, you could just keep practicing just typing with your hands raised all the time, but here or there sometimes when it gets too low for certain keys I noticed the last gen track pad moved the mouse from my palm or lower hands.

How does it go about charging the nexdock and the phone at the SAME TIME? Or it doesn't? You'd have to buy a separate adapter?

When connected to a gaming desktop with USB-C or hdmi, does it work exactly like a normal monitor in terms of latency ? I want to cable-connect it to desktop and use it from the couch like a laptop. Would that be responsive?

Does it need to be connected to a local network to have wireless mode... Or can you literally connect this outside on the bus directly to your phone wirelessly And like always have they allowed you to rotate to portrait mode in mirrored mode so you could have a gigantic cell phone

30hz over wireless is a deal breaker in my opinion. What's the point of even having a wireless option if that's the best they can do?

I was looking at this as a companion for the ROG Ally. I am older... And am going back to school and figured why do I need a laptop if I can have something like this and the Ally. But the lack of passthrough charging of more than 15w sorta sucks.

using it for the steam deck is the most backwards thing I have ever seen. its brilliant for your phone of course but the steam deck though. plug a portable device into a less portable but cumbersome device and use a controller when vie already head all of that built into the steam deck to begin with. its really 1 step forward and two steps back. the nexdock is to expensive to really justify in most occasions but its still smart.
