Best Gunsmith in the tri-state! He has done great work for me.

Good video, everytime I contour a barrel blank I tell myself I will never do it again. I don't know why I didn't think about moving my tail stock instead of having to move my taper attachment multiple times.

Evolution makes a magnet wand that work great for picking up the chips on the lathe and you can get a 18" or 24" magnet on wheels to use on the floor. Great video

Nice quality job. Very nice shop.

You should make a taper attachment for your lathe.........once you get the tailstock aligned properly for chambering........you don't want to mess with it. You can also hold the cylinder portion of the contour with a chuck for rigidity instead of a center/dog setup.

I've considered buying or making a taper attachment but I've gotten so proficient at turning blanks without one and resetting my tailstock that I don't know that it would really benefit me.

Nice work, this is how I taper a barrel as well.

Im attempting this now , both barrels have to be the same for a double rifle , iv been practicing on some old scrap yard steel , before i start cutting on expensive blanks ,

Thanks for the video! I just got back from my LGS with a new Howa 1500 I bought at Gunbroker. Cerekoted barrel. As I run my hand down the barrel I can feel a waist or dip in the taper about 6.5 inches back from the muzzle. The dip is about 1 inch in length. It feels like they removed too much there at the dip. Taper, dip, then back to normal taper. I can kind of see it but I can definitely feel it. Should I be worried about this? I'm thinking yes, but I sure hate to worried about a brand new never been shot rifle having to be sent back to the manufacture. Any advice you'd like to share?
@thebeardedgunsmith91772 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say without measuring the diameter of the "dip" but I'd hazard a guess to say it's probably fine. You'd be surprised just how thin some sporter contour barrels can be in areas nearing the muzzle. Somebody probably finished the contour with a lathe file and got a bit carried away right there.

@@thebeardedgunsmith9177 Thanks for the super fast reply! I've been thinking about it and I suppose that as long as it does the job, I got nothing to complain about.

@@thebeardedgunsmith9177 Just for sake of completion I got my calipers out. .675 prior to dip, .640 mid dip, flares back out to .650 after dip, finishes .625 at the muzzle. First three measurement taken 7.5", 6.5" & 5.5" back from muzzle. Will it effect accuracy? I guess only one way to find out. Thanks again.

Do you have to adjust fairly quick and often just after moving the steady rest to the tapered section to keep the chatter out, or to a minimum, until the steady rest takes the form of the taper? I'm guessing at first it's going to wear fairly quick where the head stock end of the rest is taking all of it until if forms all the way across the bronze.
@thebeardedgunsmith91777 ай бұрын
Typically not. That used to happen to me until I found just the right amount of pressure for the fingers to be pushing on the barrel. Also using heavy way oil and having a polished surface keeps it in check.

Hi sir, i have a wilson arms 20" bull barrel which is 1.050 diameter after the gas port. The barrel nut ill use for it doesnt fit and there is not enough material if i bore out the barrel nut. Is it safe to have a gunsmith machine/reduce the diameter of the barrel to make the barrel nut fit? Will have any bad effects on the barrel? Thank you sir
@thebeardedgunsmith91773 жыл бұрын
If im properly envisioning what you're describing, it shouldn't be an issue to have the barrel turned down for the nut to fit over it. I'm just curious why they would make a barrel larger than the shoulder of the upper though. Sounds odd.

Now that is TAPERED , how you are going to hold it in the joes to cut the crown and thread it?? thank you in advance.
@thebeardedgunsmith91776 ай бұрын
I held the tenon in a 4 jaw and put the barrel in the steady rest to indicate the bore and cut the crown.

hello what kind of steel do you use for the barrel?
@thebeardedgunsmith91773 жыл бұрын
The majority of the barrel blanks that I use are chromoly but every now and then a customer wants a stainless barrel.
@angelgabo17993 жыл бұрын
Which alloy would you recommend the most for a barrel?
@thebeardedgunsmith91773 жыл бұрын
Definitely 4140 chromoly steel.
@angelgabo17993 жыл бұрын
i recommend you 4150 chrome moly vanadium
@angelgabo17993 жыл бұрын
You do them heat treatment or you buy it already with the treatment just to work and assemble in the weapon ??
