Honestly.. i gravitated to djing because the pads on my the controllers look like and function similarly to the pads on my beat making equip. With beat making equip, you got sound edits, which is basically serato flip, then there's sampling, cueing, recording and fx. You have 4 decks and 32 samples.. which equate to tracks on a beat machine... Those mashups can be performed live with preparation...

I'm a dj myself and I recently saw sickick perform live at a club. I was so disappointed. He wasn't even a good dj (even tho I believe it was a pre recorded track and all he was doing was adding unnecessary effects very dramatically) and then he was clearly faking the actual tappin of the pads as nothing changed in the track as he did that. Sickick is using the sampler pad mode whenever he preform his mashups. It’s one of many ways any dj can perform their music or playlist. Just imagine if a guitarist made the sickest solo, but didn't have the skill to play it live. Then went and prerecorded every note one by one, spliced it all together, then played the solo at a concert as if it was live. Nobody in the industry would accept that, the fans wouldn't accept that. There has to be a line drawn somewhere. It's either a mashup you release as a mashup or a live performance. You can either do it live or not, and if you can't then don't fake it. I don't understand why so much fakery is allowed in the DJ/EDM scene today. It makes everything a complete joke. Djing isn't a joke to me when I see people like Jazzy Jeff, Grandmaster Flash, Craze, Qbert, Carlo Atendido. Stuff like this makes a mockery of their hard work, skill, and all the routines that took hours, days, years to pull off. It makes it all a big joke. If I play guitar hero on medium settings I don't expect to be applauded as if I was Jimi Hendrix.

@@djcarlo As far as the YT video goes I don't really see a problem, it's just meant to be a visual acompanyment to the track and almost all music videos are mimed. If he's doing that live at club and festival performances then he should really put in the practice to do a genuine live performance.
@nunya937 Жыл бұрын
Well let's see hear.... What happens when they catch artist lipsyncing their music and not actually sing it at a concert!?! They get criticized deeply for it by their fan base when they feel cheated. So why is it so bad to call out someone portraying a skill that they don't seem to truly have. As far as we know he could be mashing up other Djs work previously recorded since he clearly cant do it live. We wouldn't know!
@iancowley_DJ Жыл бұрын
@@nunya937 Milli Vanilli. Their songs were recorded by somebody else, they lost their Grammy's, reputation, career. Nobody should be on stage miming to other people's work. Singers sometimes mime their own stuff, but there could be a million reason behind that, like the dancing is too rigorous they can't do both. They have damaged their voice. Those reasons are ok. Or they just can't pull off what they do in the studio on stage. That's a bit of cheat. But it's still them. Worse is making a set in Ableton, then miming it on stage. DJs should not mime, full stop.
@iancowley_DJ Жыл бұрын
@@TwoLeftSh0es But it's not his music. It's not a music video for a song. He is showcasing what he can do live on the controller, and the "mashup" he created using a controller. Let's not sugar coat it. If it was a music video for his mashup make have him sat in front of the computer vibing out. Djs like Carlo work their butts off to get to the level he is miming at, then somebody comes along taking the glory pretending they are on the same level.

The true test of a real DJ is to take away the samples, loops and auto sync and then see what happens. Put the same DJ on a pair of 1200's with vinyl, on a controller with just CD's and no waveform or on a controller with MP3's and no frills and then listen to what they can't do. In the 80's we were trained by those that came before us. The ethics of the booth back then are not taught today. Today most don't even know the true reason for the title of DJ. The more you can do by using less "Faking it" only comes through always practicing as much as possible.
@djcarlo2 жыл бұрын
I do love the dedication to the purest aspects of the art, and I agree that true DJs won't have a problem if you take away the wave forms. In the end though, a true DJ also knows how to show the crowd a good time, and practice is always the key to making that happen.

Hi Carlo! Nice video! I have one question to you- what dj console do you prefer for start? DDJ-400 or Hercules 500? Greetings!
@djcarlo2 жыл бұрын
They've both got their own merits, but I'm more for the 400. If you're a Serato user though, go for the 500, and the 400 is Rekordbox only! :)

This might be a silly question. But are there any free dj record pools?

For now, no, not really. Soundcloud would be the *closest* thing to one, but you've still gotta pay for other stuff there

Hello DJ carlo.. I would like to request a breakdown of Dj Black Coffee he is amazingly so cool to watch.

Trying to tell ya!! He uses Ableton push & a pioneer s11 both units can be midi mapped however U want them to be & you’ll be able to get stupid busy within Ableton & Serato @ the same time. Both programs work well together. The level of difficulty is very high but, coming out of Covid (pause) creative Djs/will get the money.
@djcarlo2 жыл бұрын
I've actually seen some DJs work Ableton and Serato at the same time, but I'm not well versed enough in Ableton to really work it while DJing. Thanks for the info!

Hey Carlo, if I have a choice, which format should I use for getting tracks? (Right now I’m either getting them through a private group or buying them myself.)There’s MP3, M4A, WAV, or FLAC. Will any of those be a problem if I get to play on a big stage someday with big speakers?
@djcarlo2 жыл бұрын
MP3 should suffice actually! For me, MP3 with variable bit rate or 320 kbps work well enough with big speakers.

How come you never made any demo/instructional videos for the Roland line of controllers. I have a Roland DJ-202 and I'm literally starting out brand new. Would like to see what you could do with it.

Mostly because I don't have any. They're weirdly uncommon here in The Philippines, and customs here make it a nightmare to import them on my own. Maybe one day in the future John!

If (and that's a big If) he made the mash up himself, I don't really have a problem with this. I don't think he is really trying to convince anyone it is real, it is very obviously fake. He is selling a "show." He has a costume on, he is putting on a performance and playing his mash up. It is for entertainment purposes. You guys don't really think the magician sawed that lady in half either (do you?). You need a video to promote your mix, he just did this fake performance/ costume thing instead of putting a still picture. Did he ever even claim he was actually performing in the video?
@djcarlo2 жыл бұрын
I'm super sure he made the mash up himself, and I'm positively sure he really did the video to put on a show and create content. I just really wanted to see though if what he did in the video was doable live, and it totally was! For everything else, you've got an absolute point Kenneth; it's all marketing and exposure!
@DiSC0RDUK2 жыл бұрын
He doesn't make the mashups himself he was part of an Indian boyband that worked with production teams and this is just the next stage of evolution of their business strategy. His whole brand/strategy/image is fully manufactured and deliberately deceptive and disingenuous.

My home mate literally drilled me shit tons of times with his videos like "why you dont do stuff like that when you get gigs" etc. First I was like "MAN PROBABLY DO NOT EVEN HAVE QUARTER OF HIS EXPERIENCE" but then after my friend hpyed me, I actually tried to "analyse" his videos, to take a referance and try to copy his work as practice, at that point I realised that he was faking... To be honest, the biggest problem with it is, this dude is literally making sh*t tons of money, and also getting alot of fame with this. I dont wanna call "advertising" pointless, he did his own advertising pretty well and he marketted his stuff pretty well, but dude, this guy is literally as popular as top class dj's with his fake videos...

Strange times we live in, eh? But it is what it is with the rise of short form videos.
