For those who don't know, Jonas unfortunately passed away a few short days ago. It was very sudden, there was no precedent, but fortunately that also meant there was no pain or suffering. Drumming became a big part of Jonas's life thanks to one of my all time favorite music channels. Thank you for doing this Rob! He frequently talked about how much better he was getting at drumming in his streams, and I could tell it became more than just a hobby and became a passion.

The thing I love about musicians is, by and large, how much joy they take in getting other people into their art. Sure, you see some gatekeeping, but for the most part it's like "Dude you want to learn a few power chords? A basic 4/4 beat? A simple bass line? Hell yeah let's go! Let's make you a musician so we can jam!"

Also to head off the inevitable question about how I posted this comment before the video went live: I invented a keyboard that exists outside of space and time. 3:58 It's a small but powerful trick Rob is pulling here. You may think he is showing off, but this is shows his student lots of things, which he may come to understand further on (Like he's actually showing how simple jamming is, and the effect and sound of the toms and cymbal, and how things sound shortly after eachother, and how other things sound slowly after eachother), but most importantly he's showing his student, that he can play the hi-hat, and that because he has mastered that, Rob doesn't have to. Positive reinforcement in its purest form.

Plus, having someone else playing "offbeat" (I know Rob isn't doing that, but you see what I mean) helps you focus on the beat and sets your mind for "whatever the hell is happening, I MUST keep on playing that beat". My old drum teacher used to do that all the time: "Oooh let's see if you really learned paradiddles" and started playing the cowbell way off beat just to distract me. Ten years later is probably one of the greatest things I've learned as on live music you can have tons of distractions (crowd singing/clapping off beat, the feedback of an instrument in your monitors, poor PA, too much distortion, no monitors etc.)!

Then I put it in my closet and haven't touched it in 4 years. I had no idea how to start. This video showed me how to start. I think I will set them up outside and practice the next time my neighbors throw a giant loud party in the middle of a quarantine because rules don't apply to them or something. Anyhow, thank you for giving me the first steps towards learning how to use this instrument that's just been sitting in my closet for years.

I've been playing the drum kit for almost 40 years, and have never been a teacher of them. I've dabbled in it, but by no means have I been extremely successful in teaching drums. Watching you teach a simple drum beat was a very cool and enlightening experience for me. I sincerely enjoyed watching this process and your patience. You're a natural born teacher, Rob. Awesome!

This was so wholesome. Life is short. I wasn't familiar with Jonas, but the fact he had a great attitude and was so open to messing up and that he kept playing after learning is very inspiring. This video had me tapping my hands on my chest doing basic rhythms. Jonas seemed so fun and his love for tetris bled through in this, I'm definitely heading to watch him play next!

If somehow you can do an interview with some video game composers that would be awesome. The obvious fit would be Mick Gordon (DOOM, Wolfenstein...), why not Chris Christodoulou (Deadbolt, Risk of Rain). When I first started learning to play it was way too structured, more focus on the technique than the enjoyment of sharing music, I changed my teacher, my new teacher was way more focussed on the joy of playing and encouraged me to spread my wings a bit. Technique is, of course, important but ultimately the enjoyment is what brings you back to any instrument. Having someone play alongside you on a guitar suddenly opens up the possibilities and actually forces you up your game, in a good way! Always great to see someone learn a new skill and enjoy doing it! 😀
