Watching Mike is inspiring. He has a great way of giving the information to help others want to try. After turning my first Artisan Inlay rings, I want to try the ceramic. I do need to purchase the Boring Head so I can give the comfort rings a try as well. Thank you Mike and the others at Craft Supplies USA. Hello, I recently bought one of your chucks and a small ceramic ring core. As I was trimming the sides of the blank down the the core with my carbide tool the ceramic was damaged. It left a rough edge on the ring. I was under the impression that it would not hurt it. The ring looks good and from the naked eye it is hard to tell it is scratched. But you can feel it. Did I do something wrong? Thank you

Awesome videos guys. I have a few questions. First I had large chunks of the opal fling out all the way to the ceramic part of the ring. (I cleaned the ring with denatured alcohol first) Is that why you turned the tool 45 degrees? I had it square to the ring. Is that why? I should have watched this video first lol. Second question is I had some of the CA turn white after applying some accelerator to it. (thin CA, didnt happen using thick CA) Any reason that would happen? Thanks

Talking from experience, after you have inlayed the bulk of your material you will need a dremel/rotary tool and very carefully grind off the high spots, you don’t want to grind the actual ceramic so be careful you’re just trying to get it down flatter! Once flat-ish, go back to the lathe and with some wet 240 grit start sanding down to the ceramic. When I do it this way I don’t get chunks flying out! So sand off the high spots before turning and you should be fine. Also I never use accelerator, Just patience and huff onto it! The moisture from your breath acts as an accelerator, and I don’t get any white marks inside the inlay channel. Hope this helps!

how do you remove any CA that has leaked over the sides (next to the inlay). I tried a razor blade and it leaves hard edges.

I always just sand it down with sandpaper. The ceramic will be perfectly fine and you will get rid of the CA. Good luck!

My sandpaper keeps imparting it's color to lighter inlays. how is this avoided?

Maybe don't go too aggressive on the sandpaper or just take it slow and don't let it heat up too much. I have also found that a run in an ultrasonic cleaner does wonders before the final CA and polish. Good luck!

Can you use micro-surface finishing pads, scratch free, and micro magic to finish the ring?

The micro-surface pads are equivalent to using micro magic - we wouldn't recommend using them both. If you have those and Scratch Freee, use the Scratch Freee first - then the pads all the way through the highest grit. That'll give you a finished surface as good as the Micro Magic.

Some woodturners prefer to use CA on rings and others argue that UV resin is a better choice. Why did you choose CA over UV resin?

The reason I choose CA over UV is CA is faster to apply and polishes to a higher shine than UV resin. I’ve also found layering UV resin to be problematic. However UV resin is more flexible and slightly more durable long term. Try both out and see what you prefer.
