Turning my Fujifilm X-T4 into a Compact Cinema Rig using SmallRig, Tilta, the Atomos Ninja V and other parts. Fulling rigging out the Fujifilm X-T4 is a great thing to do because it works so well for professional video work. I powered the X-T4 using a mobile power bank via USB-C. This is the best way I’ve found to power the X-T4 externally so far. Once I find a way to power the Fujifilm X-T4 with a v-mount battery I will make an updated video. You could also do this rig with the Fujifilm X-T3 or honestly, just about any Mirrorless camera with a cage.

Hi Chadwin great breakdown on your xt4 setup. I'm a new xt4 owner as well. I'm noticing mini Ibis lag jerks when doing slow pan shots. I see that you have some 60p shots in your test footage and I'm also seeing the lag jerk motion from the Ibis as well, although it's less noticeable when you shoot 60p and playback in 24p. I was wondering if you are noticing this with your other footage and how you are tackling this issue.

Hey Chadwin. I’m looking to use a portable power bank on my camera, and the power bank says it supports 5V, 9V, and 12V and that it will adapt to the power. Do you think there is any risk of frying the camera?
@chadwin
@chadwin 2 жыл бұрын
Well, that all depends on the voltage your camera model can accept. If it's less voltage that in needs like 5V, it won't fry it, it will just trickle charge very slowly. Just check and see what your cam requires and make sure its not more voltage than it can handle.
@AlexTylerMeyers
@AlexTylerMeyers 2 жыл бұрын

I got the small rig universal base plate 15mm rod baseplate for this setup but I’ve been having a lot of trouble with the camera not coming loose. The small rig cage only allows for one screw with the baseplate due to the spacing of the holes, and this one screw usually doesn’t prevent the camera from swiveling a little left and right and eventually getting way too loose. I see that you also only used one screw for your baseplate and was wondering if you’ve had any issues with it

@@chadwin I've been waiting all day on the supposed release of Sigma Fp L. Haven't seen anything yet but a lot of leaked info. Sounds like it's going to cost more because of the sony sensor upgrade. If it can add some features we get in the Lumix line or Sony FX3, I think we'll be ok.

I have the nucleus nano on my Fuji X-T4 rig but the frustrating thing I've noticed is that for some reason when the gear changes directions it shifts the camera up and down just slightly but you can see it in the shot and it's supper frustrating and amateur looking. I have the same small rig cage as you but from what I can tell the camera itself is shifting in the cage, not the cage itself so it makes me think that the cage's fit is for some reason not snug enough of a fit? Have you experienced this problem at all with this setup?
@chadwin
@chadwin 2 жыл бұрын
I have had this issue before yes--mostly with my old A7s since the cage didn't fit very well. but i haven't had that problem with the X-T4 cage. Just double check and make sure it's tight--there should be a little screw that goes in the side to stabilize it and keep it from shifting inside of the cage. hope that helps some!

@TheCreativeNest
@TheCreativeNest 4 жыл бұрын
This is genius. I love it. Currently working with the fuji X-T3 (can't quite justify upgrade yet haha). I'm using my camera on a Crane Plus gimbal OR handheld. You're using a manual lens on this rig, handheld. Do you find the footage to be fairly stable with the IBIS? Or are you still running it through stabilisation in post? Also, sweet matte box. Saves buying variable NDs for each lens!
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 жыл бұрын
Creative Nest nice! The Crane Plus is a great gimbal. I don’t think upgrading to the X-T4 would be worth it for you unless you really want IBIS. The IBIS is pretty good, but I was also filming in 60 FPS, so once you slow it down in post it looks much smoother. I added stabilization to 2 clips, but only cause I had a 100mm lens on there for a few shots and it was a little shaky that zoomed in. Hope that helps! 👍🏻
@b-motion
@b-motion 4 жыл бұрын
Nice breakdown! I'm thinking about selling my xt3 to upgrade to the xt4 especially for the Ibis do you think is it worth? Is the IBIS work well handheld using a manual lens?
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 жыл бұрын
@@b-motion Yeah that's totally up to the kind of work you do. If you do A LOT of handheld video work, then it might be worth upgrading. All of the example footage in this video was shot handheld on a manual lens and it did a pretty good job of stabilizing it. The rig and shooting at 60fps really helps smooth out the footage though too.

The Nucleus N wont work on this setup like this, because the Whell is too close to the motor. It requires a minimum distance of 5 Inches, you can actually see that in the video at 11:53, when you are turning the wheel, but the motor doesn't respond. I have spoken to Tilta about this issue, and they confirmed that the Nano needs minimum 5inches distances between motor and wheel. It also makes no sense to use an expensive wireless FF System (300bucks minimum) on a handhald rig like this, you can use a simple mechanical Follow Focus System (100 bucks) that works without batteries and put it on the almost same position, next to the lense.
@chadwin
@chadwin 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, you're totally right! sometimes when the focus wheel is too close to the motor it gives me issues and will not respond. usually it does work, but sometimes it doesn't. if you don't need the capabilities that wireless offers, definitely use a fully manual follow focus and save the money! haha

The X-T4 is still a really great camera to buy in 2022! In my opinion it's one of the best APSC cameras you can get still, since it has 10bit 4k 60 fps. The only thing is it doesn't have as good of auto focus as newer sony and canon cams. I actually ended up selling it, but only because I wanted to go all full frame. It would be a good camera for real estate for sure!

@@chadwin Hey thx bro! I’m not sure where to go right now. Too many options and I’m a Nikon shooter. I ended up buying a Nikon to Fuji mount so I can use my girlfriends xt2. I love 4K it’s so much better… Doing zooms, crop etc. miss 60p. I still love the quality my D810 produce, it feels more organic, analog. The xt2 is crushing the blacks too much. I haven’t experiment with the film looks. I would love to test xt3/xt4 with my glass. Also be able to shoot in log. Right now I’m starting to think that I should keep on using what I have and buy good led light instead. I feel at home with Nikon but I also like the Fuji x-line. Love the colors. It’s easy to match Fuji stills with Nikon… But harder to match video between Nikon and Fuji. I still think Nikon produce better colors but I miss 4K 60p.

@chadwin
@chadwin 4 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome, they’re great cages! I mounted the Nucleus base plate underneath riser because the 15mm rod stuck out to far and ran intro the mattebox otherwise. @chadwin I've been using this build and it's been great. I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate some rod support for a 70-200mm lens onto this current setup. Do you have any suggestions of what I can add to the set up to support that lens type?

Great set up. Is ot really possible to shoot in ProRes? I've heard that it's impossible with Fuji. That's why i didn't bought the Ninja. But was planning to buy to shoot in ProRes from the beginning.

Yep! It's definitely possible. I can output full 4k 60fps in 10 bit 4:2:2 and record it on my Ninja V in ProRes. I've done it many times.

This is awesome video but I'm wondering What's the benefits of shooting prores over f-log or Eterna
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 жыл бұрын
YOUSSEF MOHAMED Salah so I’m actually still shooting in F-log but it’s also Pro Res cause I’m using the Ninja V. The advantage is you get 4:2:2 instead of 4:2:0 so basically it means more data for color and luminosity. Also pro res plays back perfectly in FCPX without any need to render or transcode. I still need to experiment with Eterna though! Do you like Eterna much?

Is the difference between 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 really worth the extra expense of the ninja v over the shinobi?
@chadwin
@chadwin 3 жыл бұрын
It's probably not worth the difference of 4:2:0 to 4:2:2. But the Ninja V is worth ProRes. ProRes edits SO much more smoothly for me, especially cause I work in FCPX. H.265 from the internal recording of the X-T4 plays back really choppy and drops frames for me.
@kayladesbrisay1
@kayladesbrisay1 3 жыл бұрын
@@chadwin yeah I transcode everything to DNxHD/R (windows version of proress). Ninja V would record directly as that as well but I’m still not sure it’s worth the price to skip the transcoding. But for me time isn’t money.

@chadwin
@chadwin 3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the v-mount battery you're using has as USB port that doesn't supply enough power/voltage (it's likely only 5V) the camera needs higher voltage to charge the battery while the camera is on, otherwise it just does a trickle charge and once the internal battery drains, it will only recharge when the camera is off. you need USB-C PD

Too much stuff for me to lug around. I depend on my autofocus and don't pull focus. My audio is always recorder on Tascam recorders, so no need for the camera audio stuff. I do have a dummy batt for my Sony and a 18650x6 waterproof power bank, but have only used it one time. Probably could live without it too. I always enjoy seeing what people do to their cameras. Sometimes I think these rigs are just to give a camera a "professional cinema" look and not really adding a lot of functionality. I enjoyed the show and seeing what you did to make the camera suit your needs.

The TexPat in Saigon nice! I feel the same way. Sometimes rigs are way too big and clunky to travel around with, but sometimes I need all the added parts. It’s fun to see how other shooters rig up their cameras. I typically record my audio externally as well.

@chadwin 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when you fully rig it out it gets pretty expensive! what i've always done is build up my rigs slowly over time. just buying piece after piece till it's what I want! the nice thing is most of my parts end up going over to my next camera when I upgrade or switch.

@blacksheep7576 2 жыл бұрын
@@chadwin that’s a good point, but I wonder if you have any videos comparing different matte boxes? It appears that a very large portion of the price of this build is the $700 PolarPro box and the SmallRig offering (though without variable ND) could be bought for around $260 with a 4 stop filter. I just don’t know if it’d be a mistake to go cheap here.

Have you tried your rig with a lens support?
@pepisalazar1986
@pepisalazar1986 4 жыл бұрын
Without a lens support, the whole lens set movement (depending on the size and weight) generates torque right into the camera mount. IF the lens is big and heavy, you will suffer from micro jittering if handheld without a lens support. The same goes while using the follow focus system, it generates torque into the lens and into the camera. That's the moverment you are perceiving.
