On the mk 8 GTI the engine noise setting in individual mode needs to be in sport to even get your exhaust to pop. Even in Eco drive with sport sound it will pop, put it in Sport driving mode with exhaust sound to Eco of comfort it won't pop. Strange thing VW have done

Do you have to have the OBDEleven pro to turn it off? I have the basic version and it won't let me save after I turn it off in the menu

That works, but I have a valved exhaust that utilizes the factory settings.

Had the same problem with my 2014 GLI. If you want it disabled, you can literally just go under the hood and unplug it. It causes no problems whatsoever, and takes 2 minutes to do. Theres a few videos up as well on how to do it :)
