I #recycled some of my old #paperbag into a #guitar . This video is an experimental project, using paper bags and glue (No Epoxy Resin) and with normal guitar materials like Truss Rod, Fret Wires, Tuning Pegs, Bridge and Nut. Hope you enjoy watching

This is a really creative and interesting concept and project, great job! You clearly put a lot of time and effort into it and even if it were just for looks or the video, it would be a win, but the fact that it didn't tear itself apart under steel string tension is a triumph. Thanks for all your work that went into experimenting and sharing with us

maybe try wheat flour paste for the glue? it's used all the time in bookinding. pla wood glue is meant to be flexible, which could be contributing to the issue. i'm gonna be trying this myself anyway lol

Probably could've used nylon strings. I'm sure this project was time-consuming. I'd like to make a snare drum out of newspapers. Not really to play but kind of a novelty.

This is amazing! Paper fibers, just like wood, also have fiber direction. When stacking, maybe you would benefit from the strength of arranging layers like plywood. To figure out direction, just fold, crease and unfold the paper and you will see one of them will break and "splinter" the fibers. The smooth one is "with the grain" (works best with thick paper). Cheers! Thanks for the vid!

Some genuinely good ideas there. I'm not sure how a paper laminate guitar glued up with PVA adhesive would hold up over time. There's a lot of moisture still trapped in the laminations from the adhesive, and when it eventually evaporates it could lead to warpage etc. Also PVA itself is not a very 'hard' adhesive and even when its cured (fully dried) it is quite soft and rubbery. I think your conclusion at the end that epoxy would be better for this type of construction is a good one. You could also look into urea formaldehyde glues, which are commonly used for veneering. They are water based (like PVA) but have a hardener in them, so they will cure properly (and go properly hard) even when pressed between waterproof membranes like you're using. That's why you needed to leave the laminated sheet to fully 'go off' in the sun with the PVA lay-up. Because the waterproof membranes that you used on the top and bottom didn't let the water vapour from the PVA evaporate and 'go off'. The other thing you could look into is using a Bagpress. This is just a rubber-ey plastic see-through bag that you link up to a vacuum press. When you've laid up your laminations you can just put them on a board of a similar size, then put the whole lot into the Bagpress bag, seal it up, and suck all the air out with the vacuum pump. The atmospheric pressure outside the bag will then cramp the laminations together. It's much less hassle, and produces a flatter result than cramping bars, cauls and cramps. Very innovative!

Richlite has proven that paper can be a replacement for wood. Their material is paper laminated with resin. They make and sell fingerboard blanks for guitars and basses and you can treat them like regular wood.

I'm very impressed. Not sure how much time you spent on this project but it was wonderful to watch the video. The guitar sounded pretty impressive to me (although as you noted you tuned 3 half steps down from standard tuning and then the guitar didn't stay in tune long once you started strumming). Thanks for letting us in on your project. It was a lot of fun to watch the video. If you ever go back and try epoxy resin I would definitely like to see & hear the results.

Interesting idea, but you should have laminated the neck vertically, not horizontally. Solid wood necks have a hard enough time not bowing. Laminating the way you did will ensure this guitar will become unplayable very quickly.

I suspect the body may hold up well if cared for . However I will be willing to bet the Neck will warp rather quickly in time , due to the lower density and higher porosity of the material used.

Imo wrong glue and laminatung method. Use urea formahylide, the neck angle can be made without cutting the headstock by laminating with an angle and also use vacuum bags to glue and impregnate the paper better. Wood is stiff but light not so flexible. Good luck x

This paper with PVA glue is very strong in tension but sadly not stiff. That's because the fibers in paper are relatively short and in all directions in the flat plane. Wood has it's grain more oriented in one direction which is used to the advantage of the luthier. Paper drenched in CA glue would give a far more rigid board but I wouldn't recommend this doing indoors and without proper PPE as there will be an insane amount of cyanide fumes forming in this proces. It would also be very costly. But it's one of the most rigid hardening glues and soaks in paper very well.
@takeawaybenji
@takeawaybenji 14 күн бұрын
A general rule of thumb for composites is that the composite can not be stronger than the strongest component. Carbon fiber composites are so stiff because the carbon fiber is super strong in one direction. The pulp paper you're using is not particularly strong in any direction. You would probably do much better if you recycled textiles, since the individual fibers are much stronger than the paper. Silk would probably be the best.

The role of the matrix (e.g. epoxy resin, glue, or whatever, portland cement, or whatever) is just to keep the fibers from moving around relative to each other.

Torres made a cardboard guitar that was recently restored to playable condition. It plays well. The layers for the neck should be at 90 degrees to what you did. What glue did you use? I will use thick craft paper, glued like paper mache with starch/wheat flour. Egg white?, hide glue?, superglue? Epoxy is heavy, for neck and fretboard only. Wooden neck, bracing and bridge? Bracing thinner with vertical layers. Finish with shellac inside, and outside. Bone saddle and nut. Nylon strings. Epoxy for fretboard, and same thickness spine of neck, to form T section. Thickness of neck, paper mache. Coat neck when totally dry with superglue. Finish with shellac.

Wow I haven't heard of that guitar, I'll look into it. I did not use expensive materials on this guitar, cause I'm going for a recyclable low cost build since it's on an experimental stage. So I use Elmer's wood glue and and for the finishing sanding sealer. Also I learned a lot from this, with this guitar I can easily see tension points especially with the top brace design. Thanks for watching and leaving comment.
@johan96149
@johan96149 18 күн бұрын
@@GitaraMaker Sanding sealer is is soft. Shellac is not expensive, and is totally natural. Methylated spirits will be cheap, but not the best finish. Casein glue is very flexible. Flour(paper mache) cheap and stiff, light, hard. A coat of egg white might strengthen it. Using cheap wood for the neck makes more sense. Laminate vertically with epoxy for stiffness. I must check what materials and methods Torres used. I see there are a lot of copies made.

I know it would be an utter nightmare to work with, but maybe using superglue instead of wood glue for added rigidity after saturating the paper.... And if wood glue, maybe titebond 3? That stuff dries hard and is waterproof.
