This video is the useful one when it comes to addressing the query "how to make benzene". It does not make sense to make something so low-cost (going for less than a thousand dollars for every teragram of it) from an expensive starting material. Sadly it did not pop-up immediately at my first query search, but the algorithm eventually figured it out that this is the correct one for "how to make benzene".

Chloroforme is the french name and chloroform is the english one; the chemical name is trichloromethane. Certainement pas chloroPHormEUH ;o) PHZ (PHILOU Zrealone from the Science Madness forum)

Nice video, it can be so hard to find synthesis protocols for common reagents that are accessible to amateurs. I know some other videos have been made by thermal decomposition of polystyrene (foam, or from those transparent plastic forks) but your method seems to be higher yield. Cool stuff as always Mr. Jam_Kemist!
@jam_kemist3986
@jam_kemist3986 7 ай бұрын
thanks ! I didn't get that huge of a yield tho, maybe you can also try directly pyrolising PET with a base like NaOH or even ZnO and that could work as well. just be carefull not getting cancer !

Interesting. I wonder if you can recycle PET in your home lab this way. From what I’ve read, you can make PET from dimethyl terephthalate (from terephthalic acid + methanol) and ethylene glycol, so it sounds feasible.

Just found this channel and i find your videos very useful! Do you fhink that making benzane from toluene would be a good idea for saving some money? I do have a lot of toouene at home.
@jam_kemist3986
@jam_kemist3986 10 ай бұрын
If you alredy have a lot of toluene that's a good idea. You can react it with a strong oxidating agent such as KMnO4 or CrO3 to make benzoic acid and then do the decarboxilation, but I've also heard of a way using anhydrous AlCl3 to form benzene directly. Anyway do some reasearch on what would be best for you but it's definitly doable ! Thanks for watching/commenting :3

Why did you heat the ethylene glycol to begin with? What is the purpose of that? Why do we mix sodium hydroxide with ethylene glycol when we want to obtain terephthalic acid? Why do we not suffice with sodium hydroxide, water, and PET to obtain terephthalic acid?
@jam_kemist3986
@jam_kemist3986 4 ай бұрын
Water can only be heated to 100°c so the reaction would be too slow. On the other hand ethylene glycol can be heated to 197°c which makes the hydrolysis the fastest
