Julia's "you don't buy it for the aesthetic" makes _perfect_ sense to me, because I have tried to explain this particular ambiguity in the English language before, and for some reason no one ever understands me. That sentence can absolutely mean two different things, based on whether the "not" is referring to the action of buying or the reason for buying. 1) you bought the mouse, but the aesthetic was _not_ the reason you made the decision or 2) you did _not_ buy the mouse, and the aesthetic was the reason you made the decision There's a similar ambiguity with the phrase "you can't be too" as in " you can't be too careful" or "you can't be too strict." They can either mean "there is not a limit to how careful or strict you should be" or "there _is_ a limit and you shouldn't cross it" (if the second meaning - which is less common, I believe - is hard to understand, try emphasizing the "too")

As a psycholinguistic researcher who specialized in ambiguity, I can actually explain why most people can't perceive these ambiguities. I hope you may find it interesting, so I'll write it out for you below. Our minds have two simultaneous processes of interpreting incoming language. The most dominant one for most people is a streamlining suppression mechanism: once our mind picks an interpretation, the alternatives are actively suppressed in the brain for a short while so that they stop competing with the selected meaning. This selection process happens so fast, that people won't consciously notice the ambiguity ever existed. The second language processing mechanism works through spreading activation: a network of associations spreads through our minds. Its mode of selection is a bit too complicated to explain in a youtube comment, but the important part for this topic is that it works without suppression. So more possibilities stay active long enough to reach consciousness. People can differ in how dominant each mechanism is, with most people mostly relying on the first one. So that's why most people actually CAN'T perceive there ever was an ambiguity in the first place. ☘️
