Turning Stormcast models into STONE!

eBay Miniature Rescues

Күн бұрын

This week I had an epiphany. I would put on a concert...I mean, I will build an army! I have been buying Stormcast models off of ebay for the past few days in order to rescue an entire army for an upcoming video. The thing is, how on earth can I paint 2000 points of Stormcast models in just a few sittings. That't where the idea of using a "Concept" paint scheme came in. This is the first test of that concept, Stonecast Eternals, a living stone army! I can't wait to get some feedback on this process, perfect it, and construct an army!

For the rest of them I plan on not doing the helmet if it's off of their head, it does seem weird.
@goober113

I agree about the helmet. But overall it makes me feel as though the human figure inside the stone is raging to get out. The intensity if the light would be bursting through anywhere the light could find a way out of the stone! Maybe some cracks on the stone with light peeking through would be cool.

Highly suggest you use turf flocking instead of reindeer moss for green growth. It mimics moss growth and sparse greenery much better than reindeer moss which has a hard time looking like anything other than reindeer moss. You can buy mixed green turf flocking that combines several colours of green so the final result looks way more natural as well.
@eBayMiniatureRescues

This is great, thanks for the feedback. I was really hoping to improve on this initial design after this video came out. So the plan is to pick up a variety of new materials, try some different weathering colors etc. I have some turf flock but it's super dark green, I'm really hoping I can find some soon (locally) that is a little brighter, the color is really what i'm after, and I really don't want to paint it in lol, that would defeat the purpose a little bit. Great suggestion though, thanks!
@Min-tr1ml
@Min-tr1ml 4 жыл бұрын
@@eBayMiniatureRescues if you have the dark green stuff already, just buy some light green and mix that. You can also mix another batch with a sprinkle of yellow turf. Then you can create different coloured patches without having to add paint. Get some of the more coarse stuff too, mix with fine turf and you'll end up with shrubbery patches.

@@eBayMiniatureRescues as far as I remember vince venturella explains in one of his videos that he never leaves any basing material such as moss or plants unpainted. Not on his bases and most definitely not when placed on the model. And I believe he is right. In this video, and also the cave diorama one, this moss just looks alien and out of place. with proper shading, coloring and highlighting you can actually make it feel right, natural and fitting. I would strongly recommend thinking about that!
@pygmymodels209

Casey, do your darker blue glow with a small drybrush, building up to brighter colors in a smaller area, and add in the brightest points with layering. Airbrush gives the effect of soft lighting, and really just makes it looked like you sprayed paint at the model. Drybrushing catches the raised areas, giving you a harsher lighting effect. With runes, I like to apply a heavy wash of white, let it dry, and then glaze in transparent color to either side of that intense white.

Cool effect with the texture paint & drybushing. The glow in the eyes/runes seems a bit oversaturated, but that may just be my tastes. I wish I was better with my airbrush to try that sort of precise spraying.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You should grab a model that's been laying around and just dub that your test model. Then there isn't any fear of messing it up while you practice. And if anything, strip it if you really want to paint it normally :) The saturation for the blues got a little out of hand in a few places, partially because I went back and forth on some areas a little too many times, but also because the camera and lights reaaaallly blow out the brightness of the color. It's fully on purpose on my end, only because it gives that sense of actual light rather than just paint. In person it blends in a lot more with the rest of the model, it's still overdone, but you can also see all the details just fine, where the video makes it hard to see, especially in the face.
@cycoholic
@cycoholic 4 жыл бұрын
@@eBayMiniatureRescues I was thinking the same thing, but wasn't sure if that was the camera or the lighting throwing it out. I don't know about the eyes glowing on the helmet though. I would have just had the eyes glowing. Or the other way around.

The moss and glow effect really sell the look. Will you use variations in color on different units or will they all be the same. I like your concept of painting something from eBay and then putting it back. Perhaps it's interesting to do a video about that. Which models fetched the largest profit margin? Are some models more popular than others? Can you guess why?
@oxfd611
@oxfd611 4 жыл бұрын
That technique would look great on a ghost army? Speaking of your last video and the stone idea in this one, I remember a KZbin video where someone use a two part paint, on a Warhammer scenery piece, I think I was large statue of a space marine. The 1st part of the paint had large bronze pigment pieces, that when painted over by the 2nd part, made the bronze react and tarnish instantly. Pretty neat stuff and safe. I can’t find the video or the paint.

Nice, really liking this idea. What might add some color to it is some rusty or patina metals. It's not uncommon for statues to have some metal bits like arrows or the limbs of bows, crowns, etc. They'd also nicely shine when it was first made. Ages before they're reanimated of course. Still love the result with this one.
