Turning sugar into an explosive

I used sorbitol, which has a slightly less sweet taste than normal sugar and placed it in an acidic bath, nitrating it. What used to be edible and safe has now become a dangerous goo.
This kind of process can also be done to make things like TNT or nitroglycerin, which are very common explosives.
