Turning Thursday - Vase and Toadstool Projects

Woodturning Tutor, Colwin Way, gives us two projects today using laburnum. These projects will be a good test of your tool skills.

Thanks very much for that Colwin. These are thoroughly enjoyable sessions and I am learning a lot. Coincidentally I've just got some small laburnum logs so I know what I will be doing soon. That is, of course, after I have made my sanding disc and table. All parts from Axminster now delivered so no excuses. Take care and I shall be be back each Tuesday and Thursday.

Colin, thanks for the effort you put into your videos. I've been turning for just on a year and have just upgraded from my 3/4 hp mini lathe to a 2 hp full size one. As there are no turning clubs within 40km of my home, I have been watching and learning all my techniques from you tube videos, predominantly Mike Waldt, Martin Saban-Smith and you, with a couple of yanks thrown in. Your tool technique explanations are particularly helpful as they either confirm I'm doing it right or point me in the right direction to improvement. Once again, thank you. Cheers from Australia. Great work, love the 2 projects but i would've left the lip of the bud vase as natural edge also, just adds that little bit extra. I have been trying to find some Laburnum here in Aus but not having much luck. Any reason, you didn't use the scroll chuck for both? you would've been able to finish the toadstool on and not have to use the sander except for the base.

I’m heading to Rockler to buy me a grinder for my tools. I have to sharpen them they’re dangerously dull. I want to make the mushrooms and the vase. What kind of wood did you use for that?

Hi Great little project looks quite easy to do. as I'm a novice at wood turning I need to practice making pieces. .but there was something I was a bit concerned about you have no face mask on for breathing or protection your face., ??? What is the length of the blanks you are turning. These are really neat projects that would sell at craft shows. Something I’d like to turn when I get back to turning from my surgery. Keep up the good work

Hi Dave, Colwin says they can be whatever size you want, but work best in lengths of between 75mm-100mm long x 40mm-60mm diameter. Hope that helps.

Hi Laurence, the following reply is from Colwin - "The best thing to do is rough turn the piece while wet but leave thick. The timber will move but a lot of the stress is taken away. The general rule for timber in plank form is a year plus 1 per inch. So this means a board of 3 inches will take 4 years to dry." I hope this helps!

You might as well stop talking when you turn the vacuum on .. Can only hear a third of what you're saying ! !

This video could have been half as long if you did a little editing when you had to leave the lathe to grab a tool. It makes your videos hard to watch and I lost interest before the video was over.👎
