I'm so glad people make tutorials on youtube. I bought a Jet lathe the (midsize one) and im going to start turning tomorrow. I'll start with a bunch of bowls and small vases but i want to work my way into the live edge epoxy vases. Thanks for the video.

Super video. Lots of good instruction. From finishing gun stocks: I prefer to knock of raised grain, in the step I believe you called de-burring, with a 4/0 steel wool. It slices the raised wood fibers like a plain blade leaving a cleaner surface than the torn fibers from sand paper and without the contamination of the particles from the sandpaper to get bound in the final finish. I love the Axminster videos as my gateway to wood turning. Thank you for that.

Excellent video, only recently started, but turning the inside of the bowl has been difficult, but hope to try again soon, with hopefully a little more knowledge. Great demonstration of using the bevel.

When you turned the outside of the bowl from the base to the top, what part of the tool did you cut with? Was it the tip or the edge and what angle. I've tried with a 45% angle Robert Sorby bowl gouge and even though it is sharpened I still get tool marks. I do like these tutorials, they are very informative.

Hi colwin am just diving through all your videos as am just starting wood turning. As a novice turner can u recommend would it be easier to start to learn to turn with traditional gouges or carbide?? 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤔

If you want to progress your turning into different projects then traditional tools will give you more options. Hope this helps.

Great video. Two questions. Why do you use the rotary sander? Do you ever use a sanding paste?

Hi Kerry, the following reply is from Colwin - "I personally never use a sanding paste, but do use burnishing creams on acrylic and plastics. Rotary sanders are used to eliminate the rotary scratches from hand sanding, plus to speed up the sanding process."

Hi Kev here. I just watched this video as a bit of a recap, really good and informative. Looks like a great finish off the tool too. Thank you. I was interested in your rotary sander. Is it just a push fit for the sanding discs ? Looks like a nice piece of kit.

@@axminsterHaha sorry my bad. Yeah I have the same hook and loop (velcro) system on mine. It was the fitting to the handle I was talking about. It seemed you just pushed the disc spindle in and it clicked into place. Or am I daft and it was edited.

what speed do you recommend sanding at when manually sanding and power sanding

Hi Claire, the following reply is from Colwin - "This will depend on the project, for instance a large bowl would need to be slower than a piece of spindle turning. Most of my work is sanded at the same speed its turned at and the abrasive moves around the bowl to prevent heating any particular spot more than others."

Great tutorial Colwin. 👍😁 Why does the spindle appear to be out of balance, even though you have finished the outside of the bowl? When you let go of the job, it quickly returns to the same position at rest and even with the empty chuck! Something to do with the DC motor?? 🤔

Hi Tony, thank you! This is due to memory in the drive belt, the lathe will always settle in the same place especially when perfectly balanced.

It wasn't explained why the sanding pad was used in addition to the hand sanding. It also didn't indicate what abrasive was used after the sanding sealer. Would be helpful to know (for the novice).

Hi Cliff, the following reply is from Colwin - "Both are used to eliminate deep scratches, as hand sanding and rotary sanding travel across each other canceling each other out." I hope this helps :)

one tip colwen, if this is our "first ever" bowl, we will NOT have any idea what a face plate is, how to mount one, which size to choose, size of fixing screws, etc. would have been nice to START here; not with the stereotype " here is one I prepared earlier" ; BIG hint to all trainers here: this statement is rather cocky; it tells people you Assume they know most of what you say, WE Don't!!!- you are just being aggravatingly secretive about what you are doing, this is not a "copy-write" offence to tell us what you are doing!!!!! , and it makes us feel small, as you are trying to make us fail, rather than setting us learners up for success.
