I almost gave up on resurrecting my turntable and record albums. I grew up during the 60's and 70's when stereo equipment was plentiful. So many problems trying to get the equipment to work correctly, I didn't know what to do. These videos will help me get back into records again.

This was super helpful, thanks. One question to anyone who knows, I got a yamaha rx -v363 second hand and I'm hoping to eventually run an Lp 60x turntable to the reveiver and then out to some active bookshelf speakers. In the case of active speakers, what's the go with pre-amps and phono vs line? I'm still learning so trying to wrap my head around things before I buy more equipment.

I have a onyko txdss555 av receiver and a pioneer sx 2600 that both have phono amp in them. I want to use a marantz 7500 receiver for speakers, but my turntable does not have an amp. Can the pioneer or onyko serve as only a preamp , where i use the marantz for my 7 channel surround speakers ?

Hey there! Thanks for the video! I just want to confirm one point, if possible: As long as my turntable has a built in pre-amp, I dont necessarily need the receiver to have one too, correct? Thank you!
@DeafManVinyl
@DeafManVinyl 3 жыл бұрын
If I'm reading your question correctly, no you don't necessarily need a receiver if your turntable has a built-in pre-amp. You can just plug your turntable directly into a set of powered speakers and rock out! You will need to make sure that you switch the turntable from "Phono", which is an un-amplified signal, to "Line, which is an amplified signal." Keep 'em spinning!

If you have a phono input, the turntable goes there. If not, find an unused audio input (e.g. CD or Aux) in the back and try plugging it in there. Good luck!

Hello , I’m trying to hook up a vintage Kenwood turntable KD 2070 to a Fisher RS 881A receiver and I’m getting no sound at all … it has the phono inputs and ground hookup in the back . The turntable was working fine with another Sony stereo system that was about the same age as the Fisher. The rca jacks from the turntable have plastic covering on the pins and do not seem to fit well in the Fisher .? ….Help , thanks
@DeafManVinyl
@DeafManVinyl Жыл бұрын
I don't know a lot about the Fisher receiver, but my guess is that it doesn't have a built-in pre-amp, which you def need. And, unlike a modern turntable, the vintage Kenwood turntable doesn't have one built in either. So, you may need an external/stand-alone pre-amp, which you can purchase fairly inexpensively. Good luck!

I have a Technics SL-Q200 turntable and a Technics SA-EX300 which has a phono input. That could be a perfect match but my speakers are the AudioEngine HD3, so they has built-in analog power amplifiers. the guide specifically says "As HD3 includes built-in power amplifiers, do not connect the HD3 speakers terminals directly to the speakers outputs of a stereo receiver or amplifier". So how should I connect the turntable to the SA-EX300, and the SA-EX300 to the speakers?
@DeafManVinyl
@DeafManVinyl 2 жыл бұрын
They're basically telling you that their powered speakers will not work with your set-up. You've got an amplifier plus an amplifier the way you're trying to configure things, which will not work.You need old-school passive speakers (non-powered), which Audio Engine does sell (I found a pair for a Deaf Man Vinyl customer who was looking for the same thing). Look at their P4 or HDP6. Good luck!

Hi, I have just been left 2 vintage Technics turntables after my Brother passed away last year, they are the SL-QL1 and the SL-DL1 linear tracking turntables, the Dl1 is perfect and does all it's meant to do, the QL1 needs repairing...However my question is I have the table, I have Edifier powered speakers but no preamp or amplifier...What would you suggest I need to get the turntable running ok, many thanks....Paul.
@DeafManVinyl
@DeafManVinyl 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul - those are both solid turntables! Most powered speakers are still going to need a separate phono pre-amp, although some higher-end speakers have one built in. I'm thinking that's not the case with the Edifiers. You can get a basic preamp, connect your turntable to that (Line In) and then the amp to the speakers (Line Out). I have a NAD phono-preamp that really does the trick. Google NAD Electronics PPE 2 phono pre-amplifier, I see them coming up in the $129 range. Plenty out there, but that's one I can vouch for.

I have the Teac LP-P1000 which came with pretty weak speakers. I swear it has a pre-amp but there’s no switch on the back, so i may be wrong? Wondering how to get the quality best sound out of it. Would it work with a modern receiver and external speakers?
@DeafManVinyl
@DeafManVinyl 3 жыл бұрын
So, if I'm thinking of the right model, that system is not super high-power (just 25 watts per channel). It appears to be a nice set-up for the money, but it's not going to rattle the windows. And yes, it does have a pre-amp (or you wouldn't get any sound!). Technically, it is an "integrated amplifier" - there is a pre-amp and an amplifier integrated together in one box).
@nicolepisa26

@@DeafManVinyl Ohh ok gotcha, that makes sense, thank you!! Yeah I did notice the speakers were 25W each which was pretty low. I was able to hook it up to a newer stereo & speakers just to see and it did sound better/louder, but still sounded like it could be a little clearer. The stylus might not be the best on it either, I tried pulling it off like you did and it would not come off so I just left it😂 Thank you so much for your help!

Note the powerful Denon avr 2500 receiver Does contain a phono section on it Which does show up at thrift stores from time to time.Its usually on the cheap side fer under $40.00 .I got mine for $20.00 Ex shape. I strongly suspect it was assumped it was just a surround sound unit which Didnt have a Phone section on it, since its not easily displayed. Well worth $20.00! The same thrift store had previously had a jvc rec prior to the denon was gone shortly which you could see it did have a phono sec on it.. PS always look at the back of any used receiver that usually a sign. stick with Denon over older Jvc an sony. They sound better.. same with H.K!!

Sorry to be so late getting back to you on this. Yes, you're always going to need speakers (either built-in to the turntable or external ones you connect by speaker-wire or Bluetooth) The pre-amp doesn't "make sound" - it is just boosting the audio signal for a receiver or powered speakers.

Does a turntable/8 track/radio combo have a built in receiver?
@DeafManVinyl

It should."Receiver" is actually a misnomer. That actually refers to the stereo radio part. What most people mean by "receiver" is the phono pre-amp and amplifier that power everything. Technically, that is an "integrated amplifier."

Hey Stephen. Yeah, you're golden if the receiver has a phono input. If it is an "integrated" receiver - meaning it has a built-in pre-amp and an amplifier - you just plug and go. And that is usually what having a phono input implies. What kind of phono/receiver setup do you have?

Hi! I have an older Sony receiver with the phono port. I plugged the exposed wires into the "front speakers" ports. But I barely hear the sound that's coming from the turntable. Should I plug the wires into the "surround speakers" port instead?
@DeafManVinyl
@DeafManVinyl 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tonya - Barely audible sound sounds more like an amplification issue than a speaker hook-up issue. That said, don't be afraid to play around with the speaker connections, You're not going to blow anything up if you hook them up wrong. Just turn the receiver off when making the connections and then keep the volume down low when you switch it back on.
