additional insight : when using cleaning solution with a spray, especially if you're generous with it like in the video, don't do it too quick and aim away from the central label. some central labels can tolerate cleaning solution just fine, but only some... others will be harmed, and even a careful swipe of the microfiber cloth might damage it if it comes too close and touches the wet label, causing little pieces of its paper to curl up and the label will look less "clean" and new. I personally care more about the music than anything else, but it did happen to me, and it was still a frustrating experience I'd not recommend !

One thing I can't really find guidance on is corner dings. I have some records that have almost imperceptible corner dings as their only flaws, and they aren't something you notice without really examining. Goldmine says NM "covers are free of creases, ring wear and seam splits of any kind" - but say nothing about corner dings. How big does a corner ding have to be to be relevant?

I have the same Audio tech TT and a yamaha rx-v800 with a phono jack, but when i play a album, i have to crank up the volume . is this normal with this model? I never had a issue with my other yamaha receiver

Dude! Dude!! I have the exact same turntable and a YAMAHA RX-A880. I've been buying old vinyl at garage sales and some of them are really low, I have to crank the volume to get it bump a bit. When I play "Sada" from around 1988 it comes out with a little less gain. I thought maybe this was normal from back in the day, but you educated me on the truth. I guess I'll start my cheap preamps preamps search again. Great video👍🏾👍🏾

For brand new records, is this how you clean them before playing? Or do you also do the wet cleaning like your second vinyl cleaning video?
@DeafManVinyl8 күн бұрын
I typically wet clean brand new records, as they can sometimes come out of the pressing plant with some residue from the manufacturing process.

@DeafManVinyl8 күн бұрын
I sold my kids for medical experiments when they touched my records! Seriously, though, fingerprints call for cleaning with cleaning solution - either a dab on a microfiber cloth to spot clean, or a spritz to clean the whole thing.

Great video thanks! I struggle (and a technical buddy) with an SL1200. HUMS. Would say the 60hz version. RCA and ground wires have already been replaced, everything checked, no difference (on mixers and pre-amp amplifiers, tried different locations, headshells and cartridges). A simple lamp or the mixer next to it also disturbs and makes the humming even more (magnetic field??). Nothing hums at the technicians place (so he says). Strange thing is, when i connect one of my 2 SL1210's to the same amplifier, mixers, pre-amp on the same location there is zero humming. So weird right. Any suggestions?

Why do Americans pronounce Technics as though it has a ‘Q’ in it? As in Techniques! Surely it’s pronounced Techniks? No Q😁

More bad Internet advice on record care lol
@briannewell6064Ай бұрын
Works quite well. A couple downsides though. The washing fluid came out of the new bottle with black funk growing in it. Useless. Also when I removed the brushes for cleaning they no longer stay put. Every time I remove a record the brushes come up with it. I follow it up with a Vinyl Vac and am pleased with the results. 4 stars.

I have a receiver amp with no phono amp connection. What would give me a better sound 1) buying an external phono amp and plugging into my receiver or 2) buying an amp around 1000 with a built in phono amp. Any help would be appreciated
@DeafManVinylАй бұрын
Hey Mark - On a more modern receiver with no phono input, you can as you note typically use an unused slot on the back (aux or even CD). Just need to make sure the signal coming from the turntable is a line-level one. If the turntable has a built-in pre-amp (most modern ones do) you must make sure the switch on the back is switched to "LINE." In the absence of a built-in pre-amp, you can buy a stand-alone one and go that way, which should give you more robust sound. As far as buying a $1,000 integrated amp, that's a pretty serious investment. The are plenty of great ones in the $399-$599 range, which is more my price range! See: www.crutchfield.com/shopsearch/integrated_amplifiers.html?&pg=2. Personally, I'm partial to vintage '70s receivers (Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz), which were purpose-built for a phone signal, although they can be tough to keep running. Good luck!

I have 2 stanton t.52 turntables can i just buy powered speakers and plug into my stanton m212 mixer?
@DeafManVinylАй бұрын
You're going to need to convert the audio signal from a PHONO signal to a LINE signal to make the powered speakers work. Not sure that your mixer has a pre-amp built in, in which case you'd need a stand-alone preamp. Check this one out for $89 : www.crutchfield.com/p_252PBMMB/Pro-Ject-Phono-Box-MM.html Good luck!

Asking a few materials scientists could provide us with the best possible answer, since they'll likely know what substances will interact with, degrade, protect, and/or leave residues on the vinyl.

If it is recorded digitally, and the source is exactly that, and a new stamper is made, with the exact same lacquer cutter engineer using the same EQ, it will sound exactly the same as a first pressing.

I wash mine in a bowl of water with simple washing up liquid with a paper towel. I then pat dry them and spray a very small amount of WD40 on them and wipe off with the damp towel. The wash gets rid of the dust, grease and other muck like finger marks and mould and the WD40 gets rid of the static totally. I them polish with a lint free cloth and the disc always plays faultlessly every time unless its scratched of course.

Hey! I'll use liquid sparingly, typically to get rid of a greasy fingerprint or something similar, but only after I've given the record a thorough "dry cleaning" to get all the dust out of the grooves. Hope that helps.

If I already have a pre amp on my turntable but I am not happy with the sound volume coming through my Yamaha reciever, can I still use a phono pre amp to boost it? Or should I just buy a better quality turntable?
@DeafManVinyl2 ай бұрын
You might want to try adding a better, stand-alone pre-amp. Just switch off the built-in one in your turntable (switch it from "Line" to "Phono" on the back) and add the stand-alone pre-amp. Hope that helps.

The cover of some girls didn't change because the record company was cheapskates, it changed because the Stones were threatened with lawsuits. The pictures they used on the original insert were pictures of celebrities, living ones like Farrah Fawcett Raquel Welch and Lucille Ball, and dead ones like Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. The band was sued by the living celebrities and the estates of the dead ones, use of image without permission, invasion of privacy, copyrighted image, etc...faced with so many lawsuits, not just by the celebrities, but by their production companies, the Stones had no choice but to change the insert for future pressings, removing the actresses and keeping the band faces. Lawsuit, not cutting costs, that was the primary reason some girls cover was changed.

My old Technics SL-5 finally died (none of the 4 buttons would work anymore). I talked to a record shop tech about it and he said parts were hard to find and the labor was like $50 or $60/hr. I decided to replace it with a brand new Rega P2 and an upgraded cart. Maybe I'll try to sell the SL-5 for parts on E-bay or FB Marketplace.
