My dad had that same pioneer amp. It actually helped turn me into a tube head lol. When I was like 15 or so, my dad bought my brother a sansui tube amp. Not because it was better, but because it was cheap at the used stereo store. It was noisy, but I recognized how much better it sounded anyway. Later I got that same model of sansui amp and it was one of the worse tube amps I've ever worked on or listened to, but it stomped that pioneer. Pretty sure almost any tube amp will make that Pioneer sound like a flat, muffled, dynamicless, two dimensional waste of components. Take it out back and shoot it and never look back. My dad tried to give me his eventually and I was like, no thanks. Just a fisher 500c will open up new dimensions, but so many tube options now. Cheers.

Nice. I inherited my first turntable from my dad (which was a Sansui) about 35 years ago. Still got it, among several others! I also had my dad’s Rotel amp and tuner, and Sony tape deck but sadly no longer have those.

Hey there. I just got my old Sony turntable which has the audio output but also the current input cable. Do you know how can I setup the right input to it?. I'm thinking of a way to connect to a USB Audiocard (focusrite solo). I still need to figure it out how to bring the right amount of current to turn on the turning table. Thanks for any insight

Do you get the same quality from a vintage turntable vs a modern turntable and using it with this setup you just showed?

Yeah, a turntable is actually not a complicated piece of machinery - basically a servo motor of some sort, a fancy rubber band (belt) and some sort of gearing and gizmos to cue up the record and/or return the tonearm at the end of play (if it's an automatic). The stylus, audio cartridge and tonearm are the critical components that need to all be working together to produce great sound. My experience is that if you've got those solid components, regardless of whether it is a brand new (modern) turntable or a vintage one, you're going to get great sound. That said, my brand-new direct drive Audio-Technica wound up going to my son. It had a rumble that drove me crazy. I just liked the way my old Technics sounded better. Likewise, I like the warmer sound of my old Pioneer "silver face" receiver better than my modern Yamaha. Best piece of advice I ever got was from an old-school stereo sales guy who told me, trust your ears, not the specs." So, basically, go with what sounds good to your ear. Keep 'em spinning!
