Turo is Mass Banning Cars

Turo Power Host here with a 23 car fleet. I have been trying to figure it out as well. My fleet consists of a mix between older and newer vehicles. The only car that got banned was a 2012 Toyota Corolla with 94k miles. Nothing wrong with it. Clean title and runs smooth with no dash light warnings. The only thing is there was an airbag deployment in the vehicle history from the previous owner because it was not the oldest vehicle nor the one with the highest mileage. I believe that is the main culprit of the banning because it is the only vehicle in my fleet with an airbag deployment history. Hope this helps.

Airbag deployment is a big deal. Major repair to cleanup the interior, replace the airbags, trim pieces, seat covers, … Also, airbags deploy according to impact force, so there could be ancillary damages.

At the end of the day ALL guests pay Turo, even the bad ones. Bad hosts however just hurt Turos reputation and scare guests away from the platform. In Turos eyes a bad host is probably at least 100 times worse than a bad guest

Sounds like Touro is taking a page out of Uber and Lyft Playbook. And that is to come up with undefinable rules to keep everybody on their heels, and in the case of Rideshare pay their drivers slave wages.

I'd bet there's an obvious uptick in claims due to them requiring Instant Booking. The number of claims skyrocketed and they don't want to continue to pay these off. But you can still relist your car- just add a fake vin. You'll void the liability and protection plans, but you'll still make money. Or list the car on another platform. Or sell the vehicles.

My thoughts are also speculation: Turo reports the banned cars to insurance companies. Insurance company writes off the car as salvage title and gives you 12% of the cars value in the form of a coupon towards the purchase of any new car at a GM dealer 490 miles away, limited to a total selection of 3 vehicles with an average price of $132,000. Motor Vehicles reports the car as unregistered to the police. Police tows your vehicle to the insurance companies dealer auction. Your car is on the GM lot the next day for 20 x the value of the coupon they gave you, which has now expired. Stay gold.

I had strong rating & no major maintenance issues. No engine light or any other lights came on ever! Had a head light go out twice within 5 months that was obviously replaced & not off when the trips started. And I had a motor go out in the driver seat once that was also replaced when the guest came back. Both random unpredictable issues and the car had just passed Turo inspection in April.

I have a different theory; I believe this is a cleansing program to feed the program for new dynamic pricing. Basically, they are finding datasets that can be feed to the dynamic pricing model and are eliminating the outliners which cause most disruption to the data. Might be totally wrong but that is my thought. As data analysis or prediction models can only be as good as the datasets that are provided. I know it sounds very sinister, but they are probably trying to sacrifice few outliners.

With Uber planning to step into car sharing, maybe they are trying to differentiate themselves as a more premium offering?

Hmmm. I just now learned about Turo last night. I'm thinking about this. My animation career isn't going well. I can't find any jobs right now. I would probably get another car to do this. I just hate my living situation. I'm still stuck living with parents. I wasted ten years going to school for animation when I should have been running. I'm a naturally fast runner. Aubrey This is an excellent video, fair and balanced. I get the sensitivity you have to show as a nationally known Turo host. That being said this was one of the most ruthless and heartless move by a company that I have ever seeing, there should be a class action lawsuit for this. Think about getting a notice that we’re shutting down your business in 2 days for some BS reason of maintenance, ratings, etc. I have 2 cars on platform and just bought a 3rd to put on Turo, I’m an All-Star Hosr, cars just tune ups and no check engine light or tire issues, etc, no chance I’m doing that. Why would you buy and put more cars on with this cold and calculating company. Bad host should be removed but, you give them a Chance to rectify issues first and the good cars you grandfather. Luckily I listened to you and paid cash, I will sell my cars. But feel bad for those that financed there car and now have no way of offsetting this expense. This pathetic, will never, never recommend or use Turo.

Reducing the number of available cars would be good in general. UBER also got more selective in its product and pretty much stopped giving good jobs to drivers who did not show full commitment. Also, if someone gets into a fatal accident with a poorly maintained car then Turo will be liable. This is all fine.

If you're getting banned for mileage, older vehicles, or rating, that would that someone in turo corporate is sabotaging anyone livelihood because they can. There is no way a platform like Turo is banning vehicles and putting owners at risk of losing they're livelihood this is a disgrace. The CEO is from Beirut. 😂😂😂😂

Did Turo uncover a drug or trafficing ring? Did the ban cars with multiple trips on bad tires? There is no consistency at all across the cars that have been banned. Age (Ive seen up to 2019), mileage (saw 1 with 60k miles), time on the platform (one was 3 weeks old). The bans were all over the place....

Bandits…Rating should go for car…a car could be brand new renting for double the price and perfect renting, and older with wear and tear rating lower … they should not ban unless is real safety concerns and even then fixing and providing records should do not be indefinitely a ban. You’re smart…and they are scammers…you bring the capital they collect the fees and then you cut have to resume at cutting your loses.Need regulators to step in just cause is just as Uber and Lyft and similar bait and switch … go get luxury brand then they reserve the right to change rules over night and for example one in the past was the 5 years old rule…same, rating isn’t supposed to be based on how old the car is…service and car can still be stelar. They’re simply bandits.

While car age + mileage + ratings shall all contribute to banning, I do NOT believe a platform should ban a car without any warning. If a host received repeated violations, then the car should be banned. Otherwise, if the old car is properly maintained without complaints from customers, Turo should at least offer a grace period where it informs the host that the car will no longer be eligible for listing in the next 6 or 12 months; this would give the host enough time to still make some money on the car while considering what to do with the car after. Banning without appeal on any platform is bad business practice, on host retention. When Turo upsets enough hosts, there will be an up and rising competitor that will happily serve those abandoned by Turo.

They obviously mass banned vehicles that their algorithms tell them Turo is not making money on whereas the hosts may well be making money. Maybe Turo doesn't even know why their algorithm banned any specific vehicle. I guess the thing to do is switch that vehicle to another platform and leave Turo in the dust.

unlisted or delisted? Side question: on the way to a booking, I was having difficulty reaching the host. I was at the pickup location (a parking structure) and was waiting to find out how to locate the vehicle when the host finally messaged me (about 10 minutes to pickup) to tell me he wasn't renting the vehicle because Turo was pricing the car to cheaply. I was lucky to find a car about twenty minutes away by uber, but I was under the impression that hosts on Turo price their own vehicles. Other than that, another informative video. :)

Wow. This is against the TOS. Turo specifically states hosts are not allowed to do this. But yes hosts make their own prices but many hosts also use auto pricing which may be what the host was referring to, however he also sets the lowest price he allows for the car to get booked. Definitely should have reported this host to turo. These hosts make other hosts look bad.

I certainly wouldn’t count against it. I’ve found over the years turo has major shifts every few years, the first major one was back when they implemented deductibles maybe 5 years ago (not sure on the date). Then when they shifted insurance plans and now this. We will see as the year progresses

Turo is ok to rely on income when your fleet is full of bluebook cars and you don’t have crazy loans. I disagree you need to be totally cash, if you have a really small loan on a cheap used car that won’t depreciate, and your payment is like $90 a month you’ll be fine. I mean you can always sell it off and pay your loan easily. It’s the hosts who have super new cars on loans who depreciate which get screwed. Those people don’t realize they aren’t even making any money they’re just slowly going broke. Those types of people are who you do not want to be
