I grew up with the N64 Turoks, they have not aged well. Except for a few cool weapons and great death animations, you're better off playing Perfect Dark. Turok Evolution tried to be more like Half Life, wasn't a bad game but pretty buggy. Turok 2008 was Aliens with dinosaurs. Wasn't the best FPS, but it was a fun game. It sold well enough to get a sequel, but sadly Disney shut down all their game divisions except for the devs behind Disney Infinity.

If there's one thing I hated about the early HD era is how gray everything is. Even something like Turok, that takes place in a jungle, environments just have this Gears of War gray to it. It's so boring. I used to think it was just the Unreal engine, that's what it was good at so that's what developers created but then something like Guilty Gear Xrd comes along and proves that Unreal can do some super awesome stuff graphically. I grabbed it on the PS4 and was amazed but even the PS3 version of that game is beautiful. I guess color is for pussies or something because these dude-bro games never seem to use it aside from ketchup crimson for the blood effects.

@ZinhoMegaman6 жыл бұрын
@Dragoon-BB I have Turok Evolution and finished all of then. Evolution is the harder one, enemies could headshot instant kill you and they use this. Maps are large and sometimes confusing, there is not any collectibles this time, the only reason to explore is new weapons or some weapon upgrades. And there is the fly segments, which is the worst part of Evolution. How It compare to the 3 before? Is the weaker of the original series, but never a bad game, it still is Turok in all of it's essence, still have awesome weapons, the gore is superb (they shot at meat for the sound, it's amazing!) and is atmospheric coeherent with the previous installments. And for the record i have It on both PC and OG Xbox, the 2 best versions. If you wanna try It, Xbox version is the complete visuals version, even the PC version dropped some effects that are exclusive to Xbox, which is a shame, but on PC you can use any resolution (even 4k), it support widescreen (vertical -, sadly) and doesn't have framerate cap, you must turn v-sync on via driver. It support anisotropic filter but AA must be via driver too. So it's a matter of preference. It also support KB and mouse properly and gamepad.

I prefer Evolution and this reboot. The N64 Turoks aged terribly. Level design and AI suck. Story is nonexistent. The only positives are a few stand out weapons and the death animations. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are by far better, especially Perfect Dark. The 90s Turok comics were great though, actual story and characters. Kept the more mature rating too. Doesn't seem the remasters revived the franchise. There was even a new Turok comic in 2017. Must've not sold well though as it only lasted a few issues.

Man, my first entry into this series that I know love so much was Turok Evolution. I know the game has tons of issues, but my nostalgia tends to blind me. Please review the last entries. You reviewed some of the N64 games before. We all are waiting for Turok 3 and Rage Wars ;-)

Turok 64 was hands down one of the best fps game , take the music which makes you feel pumped when playing it , they were all distinct to each level, the same can be said when switching to the weapons, majority of them had a distinct sound effect.

Needless to say when I got up the the first T-Rex in this game I'd had enough and switched it off. It's an experience I'd rather forget, it doesn't deserve the Turok name or brand.

Great review! Once again, you pretty much nailed how I felt playing this game back in the day. I never played the first or second games until the remasters came out on GOG. I bought them both, played and enjoyed the first (which was surprisingly awesome), but never even installed Seeds Of Evil for some reason. I think now would be a good time for me to rectify that. Happy New Year!

I actually loved this game as a kid and replayed it recently and still enjoyed it. I think it is better without relating it back to the other games in the series. The knife being the best weapon in the game is something that the devs were going for - and actually pulled off which is hard to do in an FPS. In pvp you would hardly see other people walking around shooting, and if you did they would get their throat cut pretty quick. The constant dinosaurs added another exciting dimension to the game imo and I loved the setting - trapped in the jungle with a group of people surviving against all odds. I think it was good as Turok had generally been ridden to death and was heading toward being outdated after Turok 2. This is different to the general theme game companies go for - same thing over and over until it fails to sell. Where they said - let’s try something different. It definitely had its shortcomings but I would actually recommend it. Focusing on stealth gameplay as opposed to shooting to accentuate the knife.

So... In 1997 Turok started out as a console game, which later had PC ports. But in 2008 they had to "dumb down” Turok to have it work on consoles. Nah man, that's not fair enough. It's lazy developers.

That era of FPS games were so rough for me. They were all generic corridor shooters with weapon limits (like Duke Nukem Forever). So many FPS games flopped, but it was necessary because we're getting good FPS games now which learned from the mistakes of that era.

Call me a nitpicker, but one thing that bothers me just looking at this footage is how slow Turok moves compared to the other games in the series. I’ve never played a Turok game before, but the previous games all looked like they had a pretty sweet movement speed. Here, it honestly looks like Turok is moving at the speed of Ethan Thomas from Condemned: Criminal Origins. Compare this to other reboots of older FPS games like DOOM and Shadow Warrior, which, even though they came out later, had a brisk movement speed. Here, it just looks like you’re moving through molasses.
@Big_Gulps_Huh6 жыл бұрын
His slow movement speed becomes more apparent when you're being chased down by a T-Rex. If you have no solid objects to circle around, you will be caught almost instantly. Btw, that means instant death animation (being eaten).
@Hirnlego9995 жыл бұрын
T1 and 2 levels are huge though. And they have very boring missions where you need to find switches and "keys" in maze like environments. The remasters also add notifications on where to go so that the player won't be completely lost. They were still entertaining because they looked rather good at the time and the music in at least in the first two games were good. The original PC conversions actually cut down the music of some levels for the PC, this was before mp3 were used, but at least the remasters fixed this.
@TeddyOnTheSpot5 жыл бұрын
Hirnlego999 After writing this comment, I actually went back and played the NDS Remaster of Turok 2, and I have to say that I enjoy it wholeheartedly. The gore system is nice, the guns feel satisfying to use, and the levels, while confusing at times, feel varied and expansive with lots of little secrets that encourage you to explore.

Gears of War ruined the gaming landscape for a good while. Characters all had to be big meaty space marines who could barely grunt out a complete sentence, everything was in shades of gray and brown, and it seemed like anything lighthearted or colorful was avoided at all costs. For all the problems the industry has right now, at least we're finally getting away from all that edgy bullshit.
