The action tunes sound better on Megadrive and the atmospheric tunes sound better on the Amiga. Funny thing is, T3 doesn't even use 7 voices as far as I'm aware - the only Turrican game to use 7v at all that is T2, and as you mentioned, only for the title screen and ending plus the high score screen. Also, both games normally run at 50FPS - the US Genesis release is an outlier.
@leighbyford6354 жыл бұрын
@@DeskoDev I didn't know that. I kind of assumed its 7 channels as it sounds like more instruments playing together than usual amiga music which can be quite stop / start with the instruments. Is the 1st stage a remix of the Turrican 2 intro music? The FPS looks a fair bit smoother on the Sega. You can just perceive horizontal update on the amiga. I wonder that even if the vertical refresh is 50 whether it updates the picture every 2 frame. I assume a game can run on a division of the vertical refresh. Colour count is a bit lower on the amiga too, excluding the copper backgrounds on some stages but they are more of a placeholder than a graphical improvement.

@@leighbyford635 The reason why the Sega version looks smoother here is because, on top of having scrolling that just looks better than on Amiga, they used the Genesis (60Hz) version for comparison here. Another note is that the MD version had extra development time, so while Stage 1-2 became a secret in the MD version a lot of other minor things were done to polish the gameplay, like making the plasma rope default to diagonally upwards instead of straight forward (a late release candidate from May of '93, a bit over a year before release, has it act the way it does on Amiga).

This is a not really good port for the Amiga. Amiga can perform much more better. If this is a 1MB game, 2 or 3 disks, it would be the same as the Sega version or even better. Prince Of Persia Amiga version needs 1 MB with weaker graphics and sound. The Sega developers did a really great job! Adding that if the Sega version doesn't exist, the Amiga Turrican 3 is a very good game in itself, recieving 62-90% from video game magazines.

Mega Drive = 64 colours from 512 Amiga A500 = 64* colours from 4096 (in EHB mode = Extra Half Bright mode, where you had any 32 colours, plus a further 32 that were half as bright). Though in reality, the Amiga A500 could display hundreds of colours on screen at once using colour interrupts and also the copper. But the programmer needed to know his stuff. An example being the platform game 'Brian The Lion'. There was also the HAM mode (Hold And Modify) that could display a static image of up to all 4096 colours at once. One game (Links Golf I think it was) used the HAM mode to draw the greens/backgrounds of the golf courses and then they used the regular 32 or 64 colour mode on top of that for the hud, golfer and the ball etc. (things that had to move quickly). It worked well, but ran slowly unless you installed it onto a hard drive (which very few A500 owners actually had at the time).

@@DJ_Dopamine Mega Drive is technically 61 as each of the four 16-colour palettes shares the same transparent colour, but it also benefits from shadow/highlight, though not to the full (and implied) 183 colour count due to some repetition. Traveller's Tales managed 148 on the stills in _Toy Story_ but it required a combination of all four palettes as well as clever selection of the initial palette colours in order to avoid too much duplication in S/H mode.

@somethingoriginal17073 жыл бұрын
The Genesis can display up to 64 colors simultaneously + highlight/shadow, while the base Amiga is limited to 32 + 32 HB colors. I also think the Genesis version sounds better with the louder drums, but that's up to personal preference.
@leighbyford6353 жыл бұрын
@@somethingoriginal1707 Its a bit more complicated than a direct colour comparison. The A500 generally only shows 15 colours on screen in 2D 2 playfield ( i.e Parallax). So 8 for one layer, 7 for the other including all sprites and Bobs. It can do 32 if one playfield. The Copper chip can add a colour gradient for free, which is why so many Amiga games have these colour bar backgrounds. The Megadrive can do 64 but it cannot just pick 64 random colours out of its 512. It can do 2 16 colour palettes for the 2 layers. So 32 in theory for backgrounds but you have to select from a 32 colour palette and its unlikely you will use them all. Another 2 x 16 palettes for sprites. So while theoretically the MD is better the way it makes you use them is less versatile. The Amiga can do better stills with Ham 4096 colours but that's not useful in games really. The Megadrives main advantage for 2D side scrolling games is that it uses Tiles instead of Bitmaps. All arcade machine display using tiles. Its a more efficient but less versatile way to display graphics. Its excellent for 2D side scrolling Arcade games but not good for games that don't fit that mould. That's why it runs at 60 fps vs AMigas 25 fps and has so many more sprites etc flying around. The MD is purpose built and better suited to 2D scrolling games. The Amiga is better for pretty well any other kind of game. Still , 99% of the arcade games we wanted were 2d scrollers at the time

I think you messed up here - you played the two games in different display standards. MD is running in 60HZ and Amiga is running at 50, when both versions were designed around the latter refresh rate. On top of being faster than intended, the music pitch is slightly off on an NTSC MD compared to PAL MDs and T3.

Oh good God, seriously? I can't believe people are trashing the Genesis, which even the famed developer treasure said has one of the fastest processor's around. And I completely disagree on the sound, or the music for that matter. This is one of the best Genesis games period, right along with Thunder force 4. In the hands of the right developers, the Genesis did amazing things. It's not just the amazing graphics, or multiple lines of parallax scrolling. But the music is incredible, I could also mention M.U.S.H.A.

If you asked me without seeing and hearing this I would have said MD for gfx and Amiga for sound, but I have to say, the Amiga music wasn't exactly that great, if anything it sounded worse at times than the MD and at best only slightly better depending on taste. I never played this game back in the day though I was fan of the original 2 on my Amiga which were better than the crappy console ports (if I recall they made T2 into a universal soldier game) with actual head and shoulders better music (T2 title music is still among my favourite game music of all time). Got to say I am impressed most by the MD going toe to toe with the Amiga on the music front though, as it put out some great chip tunes when it had talent behind it, but on average the Amiga left it in the dust on that front.
@shannonbirt92673 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't agree with you there on the sound front - had both machines (genesis and amiga 1200) and listened to hundred's of tunes on each machine (this game was an easy win for the genesis - amiga sounds hollow in comparison) - genesis is my preference although i love the amiga sound still , if your talking about sample quality then yes the amiga had clearer sample playback in games - it has 4 pcm channels after all and the genesis has 1 - it also could devote more memory to the samples (hence higher quality) as the storage medium was way cheaper on the Amiga eg the game came on floppy disks rather than expensive carts this is likely one of the main reasons for clearer samples. So the amiga could play more concurrent samples in higher quality often . However it had 4 channels only and thats a big limitation - many games were either sound effects or music but not both because of this. The genesis has 6 FM channels (1 channel could play samples ) and 4 PSG channels . Its sound quality was largely dependent on the sound driver , eg how the Z80 was programmed to handle the playback - particularly japanese programmers with FM experience could really make it sing. In the right hands the genesis could sound incredible . Some of the best on Genesis - Thunderforce 4 , Midnight Resistance - Flood of power , Vertyex , Vapor Trail, Gauntlet IV , Master of Monsters, Streets of Rage 1 & 2 , Mega Turrican etc. There are a lot of others . Lookup SavagedRegime on youtube to see what genesis is capable of.

@@shannonbirt9267 I take it you didn't read what i wrote, as I said I would have expected the amiga version, as in this game as this is a comment on one game, to have better music, but in this game and referring to only this game, not all games, the MD has the better overall music. My whole comment was about the amiga usually having the way better music but after Turrican 2 having some of the best music on the amiga, I am surprised that the MD managed to beat the amiga in this game especially given its amiga musical heritage. If you think the amiga for this game had better music then you are entitled to your opinion, but as far as I am concerned in this game, again not all the games, in this game the MD sounds a lot better to me.

After Turrican 2, Turrican 3 never felt as good, you had that stupid harpoon instead of your awesome 360 gun. Normally the two versions would run at the same framerate since they were both designed around 50Hz, they just happened to use the NTSC version here. Still, T3 tends to slow down a lot more on an A500 compared to MT.

I grew up playing both. And it really depended on the port. Theme Park if you remember that game, the Amiga version was much closer to the PC version than the Megadrive version. Both systems actually shared the same processor. On the whole I think it was a tie. Amiga also had a lot of 3D graphics games that Megadrive didn’t have. But they felt very similar at times. I’d much prefer playing Lemmings on Amiga since it had a mouse. But then obviously there were tons of games where you’d prefer to have the Megadrive controller and the buttons it had. Although you could plug the Megadrive controller into the Amiga and it worked. But I did much prefer the cartridges on the Megadrive over having to swap discs on the Amiga. But personally the nostalgia is just as strong for me for both. And each had such great games that weren’t on the other system. Even as a kid I felt like they each just had their own strengths and weaknesses. Sound was soo good on Amiga. I have to disagree respectfully to the “Megadrive was usually better”, it really depended on the port. And each had exclusives optimized for each. Both beautiful machines, equals overall to me 🙏

I still have a Megadrive thank god, still play it all the time. But I sadly sold my Amiga in the late 90s and I regret that so much to this day. It’s like they covered different food groups 🙏. And I knew about game demos early on because the Amiga magazines came with demos of games. Also games like Monkey Island were great on Amiga. But then Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Streets Of Rage you needed the game pad and they were so good on Megadrive. Those were gems on the Megadrive and I loved the NHL games. Golden Axe actually felt good on both machines and Bonanza Bros. They felt the same. Megadrive had Probotector/Contra and Alisia Dragoon, Sonic. Both had Zool. Amiga had New Zealand Story and a great port of Ikari Warriors. Wish I still had both systems but thank god that I at least have the Megadrive. Can’t live without it or the NES. I hope an Amiga 500 mini comes out one day soon! Sorry for the long message

Amiga wins. Mega Drive/Genesis 512 colour palette, 64 colours simultaneouslly. Amiga 4096 colour palette, 32 colours sim., 64 colours sim. by half brite mode, all 4096 sim. via interlace. Amiga also had great parallax capabilities through blitter chip. They skipped most of the parallax on Turrican 3 to save disk space. Games like Shadow of the Beast (2 Disks):or Lionheart (4 Disks) put Genesis to the dust. Limiting factor was the 4 channel sound chip, which could be beefed to 7 (by Jochen Hippel sound software), plus had better sound quality.
